  • Purpose: Many Korean college students suffer from physical inactivity and mental health problems. However, it has not been sufficiently reported how this lack of exercise and health-related behavior affect their health. The present study was performed to identify the relationships among physical activity level, health-promoting behavior, and physiological variables in Korean undergraduate and graduate students. Methods: Participants were 115 undergraduate and graduate students from one university in Seoul. The Pearson's correlation analysis was performed using SPSS for Windows. Results: Physical activity level had significant positive correlations with health-promoting behavior (r=.32, p=.001) and exercise self-efficacy (r=.25, p=.008), and health-promoting behavior had a significant correlation with depression (r=-.33, p<.001) and exercise self-efficacy (r=.44, p<.001). Additionally, physical activity level had significant correlations with triglyceride (r=-.20, p=.034) and vitamin D (r=.20, p=.029) levels. The high density cholesterol level had significant negative correlations with systolic blood pressure (r=-.33, p<.001), diastolic blood pressure (r=-.29, p=.002), and vitamin D (r=-.20, p=.035) levels. Conclusion: Physical activity level or health-promoting behavior had significant relationships with the health status of college students. Strategies need to be developed to improve health-promoting behaviors among college students.

  • The entire D-loop region of the porcine mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was amplified from six pig breeds (Landrace, Duroc, Large White, Korean native pig, Berkshire, and Hampshire) using a primer set designed on the basis of reported porcine mtDNA sequences. From analyses through cloning, DNA sequencing and multiple sequence alignment, an 11-bp (TAAAACACTTA) duplication was observed after known tandem repetition in the D-loop region, which promoted hetroplasmy in mtDNA. Although the existence of the 11-bp duplication has been previously reported in Duroc and Japanese native pigs, there have not been any attempts to know the characteristics of this duplication in other breeds so far. A 150 bp fragment containing the 11-duplication was amplified and typed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). All Large Whites had two duplication units and Duroc showed heteromorphic patterns, 11.2% (9/80) of the animals had the 11-bp duplication in total. On the other hand, Landrace, Berkshire, Hampshire and Korean native pigs were non-duplicated. This result showed that the 11-bp duplication could be used as a breed-specific DNA marker for distinguishing pure Landrace and Large White breeds.

  • The synthesis and resolution of ($\pm$)-10,11-dihydroxydibenzosuberenone 3, a potential pharmaceutical compound, is described. It was synthesized from the 5H-dibenzo[a,d]cycloheptene-5-one (dibenzosuberenone) 1, and converted to diastereomeric isomers using (R)-(+)-$\alpha$-methylbenzylamine. Optical resolution of ($\pm$)-10,11-dihydroxydibenzosuberenone 3 was possible by fractional recrystallization of the diastereomer formed in ethanol. The optical resolution of 10,11-dihydroxydibenzosuberenone through formation of its phosphoamidates 5 using the (R)-(+)-$\alpha$-methylbenzylamine was achieved. These compounds provided the optical rotation of [${\alpha}]=-64.3$ for (-)-10,11-dihydroxy-dibenzosuberenone and [${\alpha}]=+61.3$ for (+)-10,11-dihydroxydibenzosuberenone. The (-)- and (+)-enantiomers were prepared in five steps from dibenzosuberenone with overall yields of 11.66% and 9.38%, respectively.

  • For the overproduction of L-phenylalanine using Escherichia coli, the authors constructed various recombinant plasmids including pMW 10, pMW 11 and pMW 12. The $aroF{FR}$ and $pheA^{FR}$ genes for the production of L-phenylalanine were isolated from Escherichia coli MWEC 101-5 strains. The productivity and atability of Escherichia coli regulatory mutants containing recombinant plasmids were investigated to evaluate the efficiency of the $aroF^{FR}$ and $pheA^{FR}$ genes. The MWEC 101-5/pMW 11 strain produced 24.3g/l of L-phenylalanine while its stability was 73.8 percent. The specific activity of prephenate dehydratase in the MWEC 101-5/pMW 11 strain increased by 26-fold compared with that of Escherichia coli K-12.

  • Wireless mesh networks have emerged as a key technology in environment that needs wireless multi-hop communication without infrastructure and IEEE 802.11s mesh network standard have currently been established. One of big differences between this standard and the legacy IEEE 802.11 is that MCCA MAC is included to support QoS. MCCA supports bandwidth reservations between neighbors, so it can satisfy the QoS of bandwidth guarantee. However, MCCA has dis-advantages as follow; 1) it can not guarantee end-to-end bandwidth, 2) in multi-interface multi-channel wireless environments, the IEEE 802.11s does not provide a bandwidth reservation protocol and a wireless channel assignment etc. In this paper, we have proposed MIMC R-HWMP, which expands R-HWMP that was proposed in our previous work[3], to support multi-interface multi-channel. By simulation, we showed end-to-end bandwidth guarantee and the increase in the available bandwidth in multi-interface multi-channel wireless mesh networks.

  • The purpose of this study is to verify the factors determining core journals in a field based upon the results of the citation analysis of the journals in the field of Korean History(KH). In order to verify the determinant factors, dividing the articles of the KH journals into their novelty and author's seniority, the following hypotheses were established. Hypothesis 1: When a KH journal publishes more articles on prehistoric and ancient eras than others, the journal will have higher chance to be included in the core journals. Hypothesis 2: When a KH journal publishes more articles by senior researchers than others, the journal will have higher chance to be included in the core journals. To achieve the purpose, the cited articles found in the two sample journals, namely, Backsan Hakbo and Hanguksa Yongu were analysed during the past 20 years from 1962 to 1981. Applying the Hirst's Discipline Impact Factor method to the the study, Historical Science Impact Factor(HSIF) on the samples itself and the historical era dealt with in the articles and the seniority of the authors during every five-year period. Based upon thr present study to ver~fy the two hypotheses, the following conclusions have been reached. 1) Tht. most influencing sublect mattcr era or1 thix liSIF of the lo~lrual is arranged in prehistoric arid ancient, Koryo, Chosun, recent era, and the others by order of era. 2 ) Clial~g~~lg a fringe or semicore journal u~to a core j ~ u r n a l , very IISIF' 011 it> article e r a 1s grown up arrd prcllistoric a ~ ~ d ancierlt era:. are, s p c c ~ a l l ~ , incr.eased high relatively. • A 36-year-old pregnant woman was referred for amniocentesis at 19.5 weeks gestation because of advanced maternal age and evidence of increased risk for Edward syndrome in the maternal serum screening test. Cytogenetic analysis of the cultured amniotic fluid cells revealed mosaicism for ring chromosome 11: 46,XX,r(11)[65]/ 45,XX,-11[16]/ 46,XX [34]. Parental karyotypes were normal. A targeted ultrasound showed intrauterine grow th restriction (IUGR). Cordocentesis was performed to characterize the ring chromosome and to rule out tissue specific mosaicism. Karyotype was confirmed as 46,XX,r(11) (p15.5q24.2)[229]/45,XX,-11[15]. And a few new form of ring w ere detected in this culture. The deletion of subtelomeric regions in the ring chromosome were detected by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH). The pregnancy was terminated. The fetal autopsy showed a growth-retarded female fetus with rocker bottom feet. We report a case of prenatally detected a de novo ring chromosome 11.

  • While many studies on the heat transfer effect of an impinging jet have been published, most studies focus on the downward impinging jet. This study investigates the impinging jet heat transfer phenomenon when water at a temperature of $24^{\circ}C$ impinges on the downward isothermal circular plate at 60, 70, and $80^{\circ}C$ and when the upward round jet nozzle is 4, 6, and 8 mm diameter with a flow rate 3.6, 4.6, and 5.6 L/min, respectively, and when the ratio of the nozzle clearance/nozzle diameter (H/D) is 1. The results showed that, as the nozzle diameter decreases, the heat transfer coefficient increases at a constant flow rate. The correlation equation of $Nu_r$, $Pr_r$, and $Re_{jg}$ is obtained in the impinging and constant velocity flow region $(Nu_r/Pr^{0.4}_r)Dr=4.6[Re_{jg}(r/R_c)Dr]^{0.8}$ at all flow rates, in the deceleration and falling flow regions $(Nu_r/Pr^{0.4}_r)Dr=42.7{\mid}Re_{jg}(r/R_c)Dr-345.7{\mid}^{0.3}$ at 3.6 L/min, $(Nu_r/Pr^{0.4}_r)Dr=92.4{\mid}Re_{jg}(r/R_c)Dr-16.8{\mid}^{0.2}$ at 4.6 L/min, and $(Nu_r/Pr^{0.4}_r)Dr=322.4{\mid}Re_{jg}(r/R_c)Dr-536.2{\mid}^{0.01}$ at 5.6 L/min.
