  • Some studies indicate that investors systematically underreact to new information in the stock market and Other studies indicate that investors systematically overreact. If investors irrationally react to the R&D intensity information, The portfolio strategy based on the R&D intensity information will be provided substantial excess returns. This study investigate that investors systematically underreact or overreact to the R&D intensity and whether portfolio strategy based on the R&D intensity is useful or not. Major results we as follows. First, This study indicate that investor systematically underreact to high R&D intensity and overreact low R&D intensity information. Second, after controlling the firm's specific factor such as firm size, BV/MV and past price performance, it is found that the performance of portfolio strategy based on the R&D intensity is not significant.

  • Given the huge increase in interest in biotechnology, whose applications are being expanded as a new growth engine, investment and agency participation are also increasing. In 2008, the level of investment by the national R&D programs in future emerging technologies (6T) in the field of biotechnology was as great as that in IT, and six agencies and many relevant research institutes are now carrying out various related projects. This paper intends to review the status of investment in biotechnology by analyzing the portfolio and positioning of the national R&D biotechnology programs, which address global issues such as the quality of life, the aging society, and environment and energy, and to propose a new investment strategy and direction for the efficient implementation of the national R&D programs.

  • This research studied the determinants of private R&D investment by examining the innovation strategies of 481 small and medium enterprises (SMEs, their employee size is 5 or more and less than 300) in Busan, South Korea. The data is derived from the Technology Survey of Small and Medium Enterprises in 2001 and 2003. Three explanatory variables for the innovation strategies are the R&D portfolio, the organization (personnel) for R&D, and the strategic role of CEO for innovation. The technological levels of industries are controlled in the linear regression model. The dependent variable is the total private R&D investment of a firm in the given fiscal year. The empirical results indicate that the private R&D investment positively correlates with the complexity of the R&D portfolio, the formal organization for R&D team, and the increase of R&D personnel. The formal organization for R&D team and the number of R&D personnel are correlated with the increase of private R&D investment across the four groups in the manufacturing sector but not in the service sector. These findings suggest that the innovation policy needs to target firms who have complex R&D portfolios, the formal organization of R&D teams, and sufficient R&D personnel in order to increase the private R&D investment of SMEs in regions, with consideration of industrial characteristics.

  • Government has accounted an R&D investment on drug development for the highest share among biotechnology sector. Since competitive investments between each agencies, issues on efficiency or effectiveness of the duplicate investments have been raised continuously. In this research, we investigated the effectiveness of the investment through analysis of portfolio on drug development R&D, journals, patents, and performance of the each process. As a result, reliable technology for current market demands could not compute productive outcome at the early process of the development. On the other hand, grants which support non-clinical process of the development has produced the high-quality patents for active utilization. Moreover, analysis of the performance of the process, which affects rate of success on the drug development, showed decreased efficiency compared to global average. Therefore, we proposed the strategies of reflecting the market demands and bridging between stages without interruption for maximizing the efficiency and effectiveness on investment of drug development R&D. Furthermore, strategies for concentrated support on each process should be prepared for the success of final drug development.

  • As country try expand R&D investment and enhance its efficiency to improve the national competitiveness, research is needed to conduct qualitative enhancement and derive progressive future strategy in relation to the academic information distribution project in scientific technology field. In this study, BSC-based performance indicators were applied to an institute that is the representative of domestic academic information distribution institutes in the field of scientific technology to evaluate project performance, and then to analyze portfolio of using such evaluation results. As for the items of evaluation for the performance indicators of academic information distribution project in the scientific technology field, 12 items that includes information resource quality, information service quality, user satisfaction and economically useful value of academic information from four(4) viewpoints such as information resource, information service, user and economic viewpoints. In the portfolio analysis, it was conducted by performance indicators and by elements of the individual performance indicators as well. Based on the results of performance evaluation and portfolio analysis, the improvement method by viewpoints on academic information distribution project of an institute was suggested.

  • We analyzed the technology portfolio matrix for the car navigation technology using QFD method and accordingly suggested the navigation technology development direction. QFD is a useful tool to analyze the customer demands and the technologies. Depending on the survey results from the latent customers and the technology capabilities from the study of the national institutions, we suggested technology portfolio matrix. The visual HMI technology, safe driving support technology, and the navigator information management technology are the most prospective area for R&D investment according to the portfolio matrix.

  • In this paper, we suggest theoretical grounds on the problem of R&D portfolio with different option premiums utilizing the Real Options Model, which has received intensified attention as the method of assessment of R&D project with high risk. Even though there have been many studies focused on the evaluation of option value of single project from technology valuation's perspective. there are few study on the portfolio of multiple technology investment by option value using. This paper bears practical importance by showing simple examples with the option value of investment alternatives and the valuation of related risk, the construction of optimum portfolio in technology investment alternatives.

  • This study corresponds to an exploratory survey that identifies and organizes important decision factors for establishing R&D strategic portfolio in the application of digitalized Korean human-dataset. In the case of countries that have performed the above, the digitalized human-dataset and its visualization application development research are regarded as strategic R&D projects selected and supervised in national level. To achieve the goal of this study, we organize a professional group that reviews articles, suggests research topics, considers alternatives and answers questionnaires. With this study, we draw and refine the detailed factors; these are reflected during a strategic planning phase that includes R&D vision setting, SWOT analysis and strategy development, research area and project selection. In addition to this contribution for supporting the strategic planning, the study also shows the detailed research area's definition/scope and their priorities in terms of importance and urgency. This addition will act as a guideline for investigating further research and as a framework for assessing the current status of research investment.
