We studied YBCO films for current limiting of the resistive type which utilizes a transition from superconducting to normal state caused by exceeding critical current. The films were deposited on sapphire substrates and covered by gold top layer. The current limiting element consists of 2 mm wide YBCO stripes connected in series. A serious problem in using YBCO films for current limiting is inhomogeneities caused by imperfect manufacturing. Therefore simultaneous quench is a difficult problem when elements for current limiting are connected in series. So some researchers have recently proposed using magnetic field and heating for simultaneous quench. We have measured extended exec trim field-current density(E-J) characteristics for current limiting elements of YBCO films in applied magnetic field of 0 - 130 mT. And we have investigated quench characteristics in current limiting elements and between elements of YBCO films in applied magnetic field. The result of the experiments show that the presence of applied magnetic fields induces uniform quench distribution fur the stripes in element at $50V_{rms}$, otherwise non-uniform quenches were observed. And simultaneous quenches between elements were investigated at $150V_{rms}$. We suggest that suppressing the critical current by increased fields due to fault current effectively forced the stripes of higher $J_{c}$(0) to quench, resulting in equalizing quench times.s.s.s.
The superconducting magnets have a large inductance as well as high operating current. Therefore, mega-joule scale energy can be stored in the magnet. The energy stored in the magnet is sufficient to damage the magnet when a quench occurs. Quench heater and dump resistor can be used to protect the magnet. However, using quench heater to create quench resistors through heat transfer can be slower than instantly switching resistors. Also, electrical short, overheating and breakdown can occur due to quench heater. Moreover, the number of dump resistor should be limited to avoid large terminal voltage. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a quench protection method for extracting the energy stored in a magnet by charging and discharging energy through a capacitor switching without increasing resistance. The simulation results show that the proposed system has a faster current decay within the allowable voltage level.
One of the important severe accident management measures in the Light Water Reactors is water injection to the reactor core. The related phenomena are investigated by performing experiments and computer simulations. One of the most widely known is the QUENCH test-program. A number of analyses on QUENCH tests have also been performed by different computer codes for code validation and improvements. Unfortunately, any deterministic computer simulation is not free from the uncertainties. To receive the realistic calculation results, the best estimate computer codes should be used for the calculation with combination of uncertainty and sensitivity analysis of calculation results. In this article, the QUENCH-03 and QUENCH-06 experiments are modelled using ASTEC and RELAP/SCDAPSIM codes. For the uncertainty and sensitivity analysis, SUSA3.5 and SUNSET tools were used. The article demonstrates that applying the best estimate approach, it is possible to develop basic QUENCH input deck and to develop the two sets of input parameters, covering maximal and minimal ranges of uncertainties. These allow simulating different (but with the same nature) tests, receiving calculation results with the evaluated range of uncertainties.
A quench detection system of KSTAR Poloidal Field (PF) coils is inevitable for stable operation because normal zone generates overheating during quench occurrence. Recently, new voltage quench detection method, combination of Central Difference Averaging (CDA) and Mutual Inductance Compensation (MIK) for compensating mutual inductive voltage more effectively than conventional voltage detection method, has been suggested and studied. For better performance of mutual induction cancellation by adjacent coils of CDA+MIK method for KSTAR coil system, balance coefficients of CDA must be estimated and adjusted preferentially. In this paper, the balance coefficients of CDA for KSTAR PF coils were numerically estimated. The estimated result was adopted and tested by using simulation. The CDA method adopting balance coefficients effectively eliminated mutual inductive voltage, and also it is expected to improve performance of CDA+MIK method for quench detection of KSTAR PF coils.
In this study, acoustic emission(AE) technique has been applied to detecting quench which is one of the serious peoblems to assure the integrity of superconducting coil at cryogenic temperature. The characteristics of AE parameters have been analyzed by correlating with the number of quenches, whinding tension of superconducting coil and charge rate of transport current. The quench localization was also performed using AE signals and there was also good correlation between quench current and AE parameters such as AE energy and AE events. In this study, it was confirmed that AE signals were mainly due to the conductor motion which caused by premature quenching. It was also found that optimized winding tension at superconducting coil was needed to prevent quench caused by conductor motion.

We investigated the quench velocity of superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) dependent on the source voltage. $YBa_2Cu_3O_7$ (YBCO) thin film was used as the current limiting element for SFCL. The analysis on the quench velocity of SFCL is essential to determine the capacity of circuit breaker (CB) or coordinate with CB. Generally, the quench velocity of SFCL is related with the short-circuit current. To change the short-circuit current, in this paper, the amplitude of the power source voltage is adjusted. Through the fault current limiting experiments, the quench velocity of SFCL was confirmed to increase fast as the source voltage increased. On the other hand, the peak limited current was shown to increase with steady rate of increase.

We investigated resistance development in Au/YBCO thin film meander lines during quench. The meander lines were fabricated by coating YBCO films insitu with a gold layer and patterning them by photolithography. The center stripe quenched fastest even though the flux flow resistance that appeared upon the current passing the critical current was uniform. Quench started at an area of the center stripe and propagate both through the gold layer and the sapphire substrate. Quench propagation speed was uniform and 60 cm/s at 30 V$_{rms}$.

We fabricated resistive superconducting fault current limiters based on $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7}$ thin films and investigated position dependence of quench progress. The $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7}$ film was coated insitu with a gold layer and patterned into 1 mm wide meander lines by photolithography. The limiters were tested with simulated fault currents. Quench progress depended significantly on the position in the limiter with respect to electrodes. The limiters quenched fastest at the part farthest from the electrodes. the limiters quenched fastest at the part farthest from the electrodes and slowest next to the electrodes. This phenomenon was more prominent near the minimum quench current. At high fault current the quench started simultaneously on all parts of the limiters and the subsequent progress of quench depended only weakly on the position. The heat transfer from limiter meander lines to electrodes explains these results.

We improved quench properties of a superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) based on YBCO thin films by their serial and parallel combinations. The SFCL consisted of 6 switching elements fabricated of 4 inch-diameter YBCO thin films. The quench currents of the switching elements were distributed between 33.9 A and 35.6 A. Simple serial connection resulted in imbalanced power dissipation between switching elements even at the quench current difference of 0.6 A. On the other hand, $2{\times}2$ and $3{\times}2$ stack combinations produced simultaneous quenches. The $3{\times}2$ stack combination showed better simultaneous quench behavior than the $2{\times}2$ stacks. This is suggested to be because the currents between switching elements in parallel connection of the $3{\times}2$ stacks were more effectively redistributed than the $2{\times}2$ stacks.

We fabricated resistive superconducting fault current lmiters based on YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7}$ thin films and investigated their quench propagation characteristics. The YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7}$ film was coated with a gold layer and patterned into 1 mm wide meander lines by photolithography. The limiters were tested with simulated fault currents of various fault angles and amplitudes. The quench propagation characteristics were explained based on the heat transfer within the film as well as between the film and the surrounding liquid nitrogen. The quench completion time strongly depended on the potential fault current. It was 1 msec at the peak fault current of 76 A/peak/ and corresponding quench propagation speed was 43 m/sec (film cross section: 4 x 10$^{-6}$$\textrm{cm}^2$).
