Reinforced Concrete (RC) shear walls are widely used in Nuclear power plants as effective lateral force resisting elements of the structure and these may experience nonlinear behavior for higher earthquake demand. Short shear walls of aspect ratio less than 1.5 generally experience combined shear flexure interaction. This paper presents the results of the displacement-controlled experiments performed on six RC short shear walls with varying aspect ratios (1, 1.25 and 1.5) for monotonic and reversed quasi-static cyclic loading. Simulation of the shear walls is then carried out by Finite element modeling and also by macro modeling considering the coupled shear and flexure behaviour. The shear response is estimated by softened truss theory using the concrete model given by Vecchio and Collins (1994) with a modification in softening part of the model and flexure response is estimated using moment curvature relationship. The accuracy of modeling is validated by comparing the simulated response with experimental one. Moreover, based on the experimental work a multi-linear hysteretic model is proposed for short shear walls. Finally ultimate load, drift, ductility, stiffness reduction and failure pattern of the shear walls are studied in details and hysteretic energy dissipation along with damage index are evaluated.

This paper proposes an innovative thin-walled square concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) column with an octagonal/circular lining steel tube, in which the outer steel tube and the inner liner are fabricated independently of each other and connected by slot-weld or self-tapping screw connections. Twelve thin-walled square CFST columns were tested under quasi-static loading, considering the parameters of liner type, connection type between the square tube and liner, yield strength of steel tube, and the axial load ratio. The seismic performance of the thin-walled square CFST columns is effectively improved by the octagonal and circular liners, and all the liner-stiffened specimens showed an excellent ductile behavior with the ultimate draft ratios being much larger than 1/50 and the ductility coefficients being generally higher than 4.0. The energy dissipation abilities of the specimens with circular liners and self-tapping screw connections were superior to those with octagonal liner and slot-weld connections. Based on the test results, both the finite element (FE) and simplified theoretical models were established, considering the post-buckling strength of the thin-walled square steel tube and the confinement effect of the liners, and the proposed models well predicted the hysteretic behavior of the liner-stiffened specimens.
As the key part in the reinforced concrete column-steel beam (RCS) frame, the beam-column joints are usually subjected the axial force, shear force and bending moment under seismic actions. With the aim to study the seismic behavior of RCS joints with and without RC slab, the quasi-static cyclic tests results, including hysteretic curves, slab crack development, failure mode, strain distributions, etc. were discussed in detail. It is shown that the composite action between steel beam and RC slab can significantly enhance the initial stiffness and loading capacity, but lead to a changing of the failure mode from beam flexural failure to the joint shear failure. Based on the analysis of shear failure mechanism, the calculation formula accounting for the influence of RC slab was proposed to estimate shear strength of RCS joint. In addition, the finite element model (FEM) was developed by ABAQUS and a series of parametric analysis model with RC slab was conducted to investigate the influence of the face plates thickness, slab reinforcement diameter, beam web strength and inner concrete strength on the shear strength of joints. Finally, the proposed formula in this paper is verified by the experiment and FEM parametric analysis results.

Axisymmetric and quasi-static finite element analysis of an inflated tire rotating with constant angular velocity and contact to road has been performed. Centrifugal force effect was added to load stiffness matrix and equation of effective material properties were calculated by the Halpin-Tsai formulation. In this report, radial truck/bus tire was analyzed. It was inflated and rotated at speeds up to 140 km/h. Then, contact problem was performed to calculate stress-strain field of tire wiht flat rigid road under the load due to the self-weight of a vehicle. Significant changes of stress-strain field of tire were observed in the finite element analysis. Shear stress, strain and strain energy density were rapidly increased at the dege of #2 belt at freely rotating state. This concentrated stress and strain made belt edge sparation. Under the condition of flat riged road contact, strain energy density of #2 belt, carcass turn-up part were concentrated and bigger values than only freely rotation state. Therefore, dynamic behaivor of tire has to considered as design factors which are affected to belt edge separation and bead breakage.
In this study, a new type of self-centering beam-column joint with tapered steel plate links is proposed. Firstly, mechanical property of the basic joint (with the prestressed steel strands only, to provide the self-centering ability) and the combined joint (with both the prestressed steel strands and tapered steel plate links, to provide self-centering and energy dissipation simultaneously) is theoretically analyzed. Then, three joints with different dimensions and combinations of tapered plate links are designed and tested through a series of quasi-static cyclic loading tests. Test results show that a nearly bilinear elastic moment-rotation relationship for the basic joint is obtained. With the addition of tapered steel plate links, typical flag-shape hysteretic curves are obtained, which indicates good self-centering and energy dissipating ability of the combined joint. By installing multiple tapered plate links, stiffness and bearing capacity of the beam-column joint can be enhanced. The theoretical moment-rotation relationships agree well with the test results. A simplified macro model of the proposed joint is developed using OpenSees, which simulates reasonably well its hysteretic behavior.
The maximum ductility and cumulative ductility of connection joints of Buckling-Restrained Braced Frames (BRBF) are critical to the structural overall performance, which should be matched with the BRB ductility. The two-story and one-span BRBF with a one-third scale was tested under cyclic quasi-static loading, and the top-flange beam splice (TFBS) rotational connections were proposed and adopted in BRBF. The deformation capacity of TFBS connections was observed during the test, and the relationship between structural global ductility and local connection ductility was studied. The rotational capacity of the beam-column connections and the stability performance of the BRBs are highly relevant to the structural overall performance. The hysteretic curves of BRBF are stable and full under large displacement demand imposed up to 2% story drift, and energy is dissipated as the large plastic deformation developed in the structural components. The BRBs acted as fuses and yielded first, and the cumulative plastic ductility (CPD) of BRBs is 972.6 of the second floor and 439.7 of the first floor, indicating the excellent energy dissipation capacity of BRBs. Structural members with good local ductility ensure the large global ductility of BRBF. The ductile capacity and hysteretic behavior of BRBF with TFBS connections were compared with those of BRBF with Reduced Beam Section (RBS) connections in terms of the experimental results.
Adhesive joints have many advantages such as weight savings, corrosion and fatigue resistance and now developed even withstand of high impact and dynamic loads. However, an adhesion has cumbersome and complicated surface preparation processes. The surface preparation step is critical in adhesive joint manufacturing in order to obtain the prescribed strength for adhesive joints. In this study, it was attempted to simplify and reduce the number of surface preparation steps, and abrasion and rapid adhesive application (ARAA) process is developed for an alternative solution. The abrasion processes are performed only for creating surface roughness in standard procedures (SP), although the abrasion processes cause surface activation itself. The results showed that there is no need the long procedures in laboratory or chemical agents for adhesion. After the abrasion process, the attracted and highly reactive fresh surface layer obtained, and its effect on bonding success is observed and analyzed in this research, in light of the essential physic and adhesion theories. Al 6061 aluminum adherends and epoxy-based adhesives were chosen for bonding processes, which is mostly used in light vehicle parts. The adherends were cleaned, treated and activated only with abrasion, and after the adhesive application the specimens were tested under quasi-static loading. The satisfied ARAA results were compared with that of the specimens fabricated by the standard procedure (SP) of adhesion processes of high impact loads.

The study proposes the method to cancel the scallop to avoid fracture of the circumstance of the scallop at H shape column-to-beam connection and reinforce at beam flange two faces with the cover plates and rib. A total of four specimens were tested to enhance seismic performance of building structure by reducing the frequency of stress concentration and preventing the brittle fracture of scallop. For this purpose, four full-scale test specimens were made and loaded with quasi-static reversed cyclic loading. The main analytical parameters are panel-zone-strength ratio, yield strengths, initial stiffness, total plastic rotation, contribution of each element to total plastic rotation and energy dissipation capability. For the specimens tested under repeated loading, the experimental result was satisfied with seismic performance requirement as the Special Moment Frames (SMF). The analysis results show that all of the test specimens were found to have good performance to 4% story drift and satisfied the criteria for the plastic roation capacity of SMFs that is 0.03 rad. according to the 1997 AISC seismic provision.
Steel-reinforced concrete (SRC) L-shaped column is the vertical load-bearing member with high spatial adaptability. The seismic behavior of SRC L-shaped column is complex because of their irregular cross sections. In this study, the hysteretic performance of six steel truss reinforced concrete L-shaped columns specimens under the combined loading of compression, bending, shear, and torsion was tested. There were two parameters, i.e., the moment ratio of torsion to bending (γ) and the aspect ratio (column length-to-depth ratio (φ)). The failure process, torsion-displacement hysteresis curves, and bending-displacement hysteresis curves of specimens were obtained, and the failure patterns, hysteresis curves, rigidity degradation, ductility, and energy dissipation were analyzed. The experimental research indicates that the failure mode of the specimen changes from bending failure to bending-shear failure and finally bending-torsion failure with the increase of γ. The torsion-displacement hysteresis curves were pinched in the middle, formed a slip platform, and the phenomenon of "load drop" occurred after the peak load. The bending-displacement hysteresis curves were plump, which shows that the bending capacity of the specimen is better than torsion capacity. The results show that the steel truss reinforced concrete L-shaped columns have good collapse resistance, and the ultimate interstory drift ratio more than that of the Chinese Code of Seismic Design of Building (GB50011-2014), which is sufficient. The average value of displacement ductility coefficient is larger than rotation angle ductility coefficient, indicating that the specimen has a better bending deformation resistance. The specimen that has a more regular section with a small φ has better potential to bear bending moment and torsion evenly and consume more energy under a combined action.

In this study, the energy absorption capabilities and failure modes of four different kinds of circular tubes made of carbon, Kevlar and carbon-Kevlar hybrid composites with epoxy resin have been evaluated. In order to achieve these goals, these tubes were fabricated with unidirectional prepregs and compressive tests were conducted for the tubes under 10mm/min loading speed. From the test results, carbon/epoxy tubes were collapsed by brittle fracturing mode and showed the best energy absorption capabilities, while Kevlar/epoxy tubes were crushed by local buckling mode and worst. The hybrid [$90_C/0_K$] tubes were failed in a local bucking mode and showed good post crushing integrity, whereas [$90_K/0_C$] tubes were failed in a lamina bending mode and bad post crushing integrity.
