  • Since the operation of the first satellite-based navigation service, satellite positioning has played an increasing role in both surveying and geodesy, and has become an indispensable tool for precise relative positioning. However, in some situations, e.g. at a low angle of elevation, the use of satellites for navigation is seriously restricted because obstacles like buildings and mountains can block signals. As a mean to resolve this problem, the quasi-zenith satellite system has been proposed as a next-generation satellite navigation system. Quasi-zenith satellite is a system which simultaneously deploys several satellites in a quasi-zenith geostationary orbit so that one of the satellites always stay close to the zenith if viewed from a specific point on the ground of East Asia. Thus, if a position measurement function compatible with CPS is installed in the quasi-zenith and stationary satellites, and these satellites are utilized together with the CPS, four satellites can be accessed simultaneously nearly all day long and a substantial improvement in position measurement, especially in metropolitan areas, can be achieved. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the effectiveness of quasi-zenith satellite system on positioning accuracy improvement through simulation by using precise orbital information of the satellites and a three-dimensional digital map. Through this developed simulation system, it is possible to calculate the number of simultaneously visible satellites and available area for positioning without the need of actual observation. Furthermore, this system can calculate the Dilution Of Precision (DOP) and the error distribution.

  • Japan has been investigating a new satellite based positioning system called Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS). Since the improvement of positioning availability in urban area is one of the most important advantages of the QZSS, multipath mitigation is a key factor for the QZSS positioning system. Therefore, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and GNSS Inc. have commenced the R&D of a pseudolite, which transmits the next-generation signal such as BOC(1,1), in order to evaluate the effect of multipath on the new signal. A prototype BOC pseudolite was developed in 2005, and ground tests showed a capability of generating proper pseudorange. Also, preliminary flight experiments using a pseudo quasi-zenith satellite, a helicopter on which the pseudolite is installed, were conducted in early 2006, and the BOC-type correlation function was monitored in real time.

  • One of the key elements for developing GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) is the comprehensive analysis of GNSS satellite orbit including the capabilities to generate precision navigation message. The orbit characteristics of Japan's own GNSS system, called QZSS (Quasi Zenith Satellite System) is analyzed and its navigation message, which includes orbit elements and correction terms, is investigated. QZSS-type orbit simulations were performed using a precision orbit integrator in order to analyze the effect of perturbation forces, e.g. gravity, Moon, Sun, etc., on the orbit variation. A preliminary algorithm for creating orbit element corrections was developed and its accuracy is evaluated with the simulation data.

  • The Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS), a dedicated regional Japanese satellite system currently under development, was designed to complement the performance of the Global Positioning System (GPS). The high elevation angle of the QZSS satellite is expected to enhance the effectiveness of GPS in urban environments. Thus, the work described in this paper, aimed to investigate the effect of QZSS on GPS performance, by processing the GPS and QZSS measurements recorded at the Bohyunsan reference station in South Korea. We used these data, to evaluate the satellite visibility, carrier-to-noise density (C/No), performance of single point positioning, and Dilution of Precision (DOP). The QZSS satellite is currently available over South Korea for 19 hours at an elevation angle of more than 10 degrees. The results showed that the impact of the QZSS on users' vertical positioning is greatest when the satellite is above 80 degrees of elevation. As for Precise Point Positioning (PPP) performance, the combined GPS/QZSS kinematic PPP was found to improve the positioning accuracy compared to the GPS only kinematic PPP.

  • This paper analyzes the availability and Dilution Of Precision (DOP) of GPS, widely used in positioning, with and without augmentation using QZSS (Quasi-Zenith Satellite System). Orbit simulator for QZSS is developed using Kepler‘s orbital parameters. Also 3D modeling technique based on three-Dimensional GIS digital map and satellite tracking algorithm for visible satellite simulation system are discussed. Performance improvement of the availability and DOP were achieved by combining GPS with QZSS at urban environment of Seoul.

  • This research proposes the best combination of tropospheric delay models for Korean Positioning System (KPS). The overall results are based on real observation data of Japanese Quasi-Zenith satellite system (QZSS), whose constellation is similar to the proposed constellation of KPS. The tropospheric delay models are constructed as the combinations of three types of zenith path delay (ZPD) models and four types of mapping functions (MFs). Two sets of International GNSS Service (IGS) stations with the same receiver are considered. Comparison of observation residuals reveals that the ZPD models are more influential to the measurement model rather than MFs, and that the best tropospheric delay model is the combination of GPT3 with 5 degrees grid and Vienna Mapping Function 1 (VMF1). While the bias of observation residual depends on the receivers, it still remains to be further analyzed.

  • The Quasi-Zenith Satellite System(QZSS) is the Japanese satellite navigation system, which designs to increase the GPS system's visibility in the urban areas. The first satellite(Michibiki) was launched in 2010 and started to broadcast navigation signals. Therefore, the purpose of the research is to analyze the performance of GPS and QZSS based on the advantage of the integrated GNSS. Especially, the study has been processed in terms of improving satellite navigation parameters around Korean Peninsula. To do this, there have been the comprehensive analysis of the QZSS characteristics, the experimental test, and its statistical analysis for realizing advantage of GPS and QZSS. Through these systemic steps, it was recognized that the integrated GPS and QZSS has more reliable than GPS in case of not only limited visibility but also ordinary positioning. Additionally, the integrated GPS and QZSS would be very useful to improve the various navigation parameters around the peninsula.

  • The main function in operating the satellite navigation system is to accurately determine the orbit of the navigation satellite and transmit it as a navigation message. In this study, we developed software to determine the orbit of a navigation satellite by combining an extended Kalman filter and an accurate dynamic model. Global positioning system (GPS) and quasi-zenith satellite system (QZSS) orbit determination was performed using international gnss system (IGS) ground station observations and user range error (URE), a key performance indicator of the navigation system, was calculated by comparison with IGS precise ephemeris. When estimating the clock error mounted on the navigation satellite, the radial orbital error and the clock error have a high inverse correlation, which cancel each other out, and the standard deviations of the URE of GPS and QZSS are small namely 1.99 m and 3.47 m, respectively. Instead of estimating the clock error of the navigation satellite, the orbit was determined by replacing the clock error of the navigation message with a modeled value, and the regional correlation with URE and the effect of the ground station arrangement were analyzed.
