  • To make direct comparisons regarding the cyclic behavior of thin steel plate shear walls (TSPSWs) with different infill-to-boundary frame connections, two TSPSWs were tested under quasi-static conditions, one having the infill plate attached to the boundary frame members on all edges and the other having the infill plate connected only to the beams. Also, the bare frame that was used in the TSPSW specimens was tested to provide data for the calibration of numerical models. The connection of infill plates to surrounding frames was achieved through the use of self-drilling screws to fish plates that were welded to the frame members. The behavior of TSPSW specimens are compared and discussed with emphasis on the characteristics important in seismic response, including the initial stiffness, ultimate strength and deformation modes observed during the tests. It is shown that TSPSW specimens achieve significant ductility and energy dissipation while the ultimate failure mode resulted from infill plate fracture at the net section of the infill plate-to-boundary frame connection after substantial infill plate yielding. Experimental results are compared to monotonic pushover predictions from computer analysis using strip models and the models are found to be capable of approximating the monotonic behavior of the TSPSW specimens.

  • Recently, there has been a growing interest in marine leisure sports and high speed power boat for fishing. The prototype of 20 feet class power boat was developed and authors are joined in this government-led project. The research was performed to evaluate the optimal structure and design of the structural strength necessary to ensure the structural safety of the power boat. A new material ROCICORE fiber added to the mat and roving was adopted for high-power tenacity. ANSYS Workbench has been used to make the structural model, evaluate the strength and optimize the structural design. The response of the structure to quasi-static slamming loads according to the rules and regulations of ISO 12215-5, Lloyd’s Register of Shipping and Korean Register has been implemented and studied. An optimization study for the structural response is carried out by changing the plate thickness and section modulus of stiffeners. The power boat structure derived fuel efficiency is optimized by performing the best possible structural design to minimize the hull weight.

  • Digging well foundation has been widely used in railway bridges due to its good economy and reliability. In other instances, bridges with digging well foundation still have damage risks during earthquakes. In this study, a new type of digging well foundation with prefabricated roots was proposed to reduce earthquake damage of these bridges. Quasi-static tests were conducted to investigate the failure mechanism of the root digging well foundation, and then to analyze seismic behaviors of the new type well foundation. The testing results indicated that these prefabricated roots could effectively limit the rotation and uplift of the digging well foundation and increase the lateral bearing capacity of the digging well foundation. The elastic critical load and ultimate load can be increased by 69% and 36% if prefabricated roots were added in the digging well foundation. The prefabricated roots drived more soil around the foundation to participate in working, the stiffness of the bridge pier with root digging well foundation was improved. Moreover, the root participation could improve the energy dissipation capacity of soil-foundation-pier interaction system. The conclusions obtained in this paper had important guiding significance for the popularization and application of the digging well foundation with prefabricated roots in earthquake-prone zones.

  • Visco-Plastic Damper (VPD) as a passive energy dissipation device with dual behavior has been recently numerically studied. It consists of two bent steel plates and segments with a viscoelastic solid material in between, combining and improving characteristics of both displacement-dependent and velocity-dependent devices. In order to trust the performance of VPD, for the 1st time this paper experimentally investigates prototype damper behavior under a wide range of frequency and amplitude of dynamic loading. A high-axial damping rubber is innovatively proposed as the viscoelastic layer designed to withstand large axial strains and dissipate energy accordingly. Test results confirmed all assumptions about VPD. The behavior of VPD subjected to low levels of excitation is elastic while with increasing levels of excitation, a significant source of energy dissipation is provided through the yielding of the steel elements in addition to the viscoelastic energy dissipation. The results showed energy dissipation of 99.35 kN.m under a dynamic displacement with 14.095 mm amplitude and 0.333 Hz frequency. Lateral displacement at the middle of the device was created with an amplification factor obtained ranging from 2.108 to 3.242 in the rubber block. Therefore, the energy dissipation of viscoelastic material of VPD was calculated 18.6 times that of the ordinary viscoelastic damper.

  • To investigate the mechanism of friction-induced vibration and noise of ship water lubricated stern bearings, a two-degree-of-freedom (2-DOF) nonlinear self-excited vibration model is established. The novelty of this work lies in the detailed analysis of influence of different parameters on the stability and nonlinear vibration characteristics of the system, which provides a theoretical basis for the various friction vibration and noise phenomenon and has a very important directive meaning for low noise design of water lubricated stern bearings. The results reveal that the change of any parameter, such as rotating speed of shaft, contact pressure, friction coefficient, system damping and stiffness, has an important influence on the stability and nonlinear response of the system. The vibration amplitudes of the system increase as (a) rotating speed of shaft, contact pressure, and the ratio of static friction coefficient to dynamic friction coefficient increase and (b) the transmission damping between motor and shaft decreases. The frequency spectrum of the system is modulated by the first mode natural frequency, which is continuous multi-harmonics of the first mode natural frequency. The response of the system presents a quasi-periodic motion.

  • Using negative Poisson's ratio materials, an innovative metallic-yielding damper is introduced for the first time in this study. Through the use of ABAQUS commercial software, a nonlinear finite element analysis is conducted to determine the performance of the proposed system. Mild steel plates with elliptical holes are used for these types of dampers, which dissipate energy through an inelastic deformation of the constitutive material. To assess the capability of the proposed damper, nonlinear quasi-static finite element analyses have been conducted on the damper with a variety of geometric parameters. According to the results, the proposed system is ductile and has a high capacity to dissipate energy. The proposed auxetic damper has a specific energy absorption of 910.8 J/kg and a ductility of 33.6. Therefore, this damper can dissipate a large amount of earthquake input energy without buckling by increasing the buckling load of the brace with its ductile behavior. In addition, it was found that by incorporating auxetic dampers in the steel frame, the frame was made harder, stronger, and ductile and its energy absorption increased by 300%.

  • Large-scale cantilever reinforced concrete (RC) columns with footing/stub were examined to determine their seismic response under a quasi-static increasing-magnitude cyclic lateral loading. Three-dimensional (3D) numerical models of RC columns with ductile and non-ductile reinforcement arrangements were developed in a Finite Element (FE) software, i.e., ABAQUS, to corroborate them with the experimental study conducted by the author. Both simulated models were validated with the experimental results in all respects, and the theoretical axial capacity of columns under concentric axial load (P0) was calculated. Subsequently, a detailed parametric study was conducted by adopting the force and reinforcement variables. These variables include axial compression ratios (ACR) varying from 0.35P0 to 0.7P0 and the amount of lateral reinforcements taken as 0.33% and 1.31% representing the non-ductile and ductile columns, respectively. This research outcome conclusively quantifies the combined effect of ACR levels and lateral reinforcement spacing on the flexural response and ductility characteristics of RC columns. The comparative analysis reveals that increased ACR levels resulted in a severe reduction in strength, deformability and ductility characteristics of both ductile and non-ductile columns. Structural response of ductile columns at higher ACR levels was comparable to the non-ductile columns, nullifying the beneficial effects of ductile design provisions. Higher ACR levels caused decline in pre-peak and post-peak response trajectories, leading to an earlier attainment of peak response at lower drift levels.

  • An autofilter is a device that removes impurities contained in heavy fuel oil used in diesel engines of ships or power plants, and also automatically removes impurities accumulated in the filter through a reverse washing function. The reducer-integrated motor serves to rotate the filter at low speed to enable reverse automatic cleaning in the autofilter device. To achieve a low speed of 0.65 to 0.75 rpm in a reducer-integrated motor, a small motor that can operate at 97rpm at a rated voltage of 110 V and 112.5 rpm at 220 V is required. Additionally, a large gear ratio of 1/150 is required. To ensure the durability and reliability of these reducers, the strength of the gear must be evaluated at the design stage. In general, there is a limit to evaluating the stress and strain state according to the vibration characteristics acting on each gear in the driving state of the reducer through quasi-static analysis. Therefore, in this study, the operation characteristics of the auto filter's reducer-integrated motor were first analyzed using the rigid body dynamics analysis method. Then, this rigid body dynamics analysis model was extended to a flexible multibody dynamics analysis model to analyze the stress and strain states acting on each gear and evaluate the design feasibility of the gear.
