Calibration of Measurement of Multiple Polarization Singularities

  • In this paper, we propose a method used to measure the polarization state of a field with multiple polarization singularities (PSs), such as an array of PSs and PSs in vector speckle. A checkerboard is used to construct characteristic points, which makes it possible to calibrate the mismatches between pictures obtained during the rotation of a quarter-wave plate and a polarizer. Using this method a field with an array of PSs is measured. The experimental result is compared with the numerical simulation. We also carry out some data analysis. The comparison and analysis emphasize the necessity and feasibility of this method to measure the PSs.

A Single Gap Transflective Display associated with In-Plane Switching Mode

  • We have studied a single gap transflective liquid crystal display (LCD) associated with in-plane switching (IPS) mode. In the transmissive IPS cell, the transmittance of electrodes and above electrodes is different, that is, the degree of rotation of the LC director between electrodes and above electrodes is 45 $^{\circ}$ and 22.5 $^{\circ}$ , respectively. Utilizing the different rotating angle of the LC director and in-cell retarder with a quarter-wave plate used below the LC layer, the IPS transflective LCD is realized such that the area between electrodes is used as a transmissive part and the area above electrodes is used as a reflective part.

  • A printed folded-monopole antenna for portable wireless applications is presented. The proposed design is based on the folded quarter-wave antennas, which have a conductor plate having two arms. A prototype antenna is fabricated according to the simulation result. The obtained antenna can perform in 2.4GHz band and be adopted for laptop applications. All the measurements are performed in the actual test fixture.

  • We have designed a single gap transflective liquid crystal display (LCD) driven by a fringe electric field, in which the LCs are homogeneously aligned in the initial state. In the reflective and transmissive areas, the degrees of the rotation of the LC director are $22.5^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$, respectively. Utilizing this mechanism and an in-cell retarder with a quarter-wave plate that is used below the LC layer, the transflective LCD using fringe-field switching (FFS) mode is realized.

Optical Characteristics of LGP with Nanometer-patterned Grating (나노미터 패턴 회절격자 도광판의 광특성)

  • The LGP with nanometer structures resulted in enhancement of optical efficiency. Its fundamental mechanism is to recycle the polarized light via one round-trip through QWP(Quarter-Wave Plate) but the maximum efficiency to reach with this method is limited up to 2. To get the larger efficiency than this limited one a LGP with nanometer-patterned grating is suggested. For its optimum design the computer simulation is performed and suggests a grating that the spatial frequency between adjacent patterns is 500nm, its height 250nm, duty cycle 50%, and its cross section is rectangular. On the basis of simulation results the LGP with nanometer-patterned grating is fabricated and its optical properties such as angular intensity distribution and CIE color coordinates are characterized. The angles of transmitted light are nearly the same as the results expected from the generalized Snell's law. Thus the Mathematica code, developed in this experiment, will be applied to designing the optimized LGP. The LGP with nanometer-patterened grating shows the enhancement of transmitted intensity distribution up to 4.9 times.

  • SOFT($\underline{So}lar\;\underline{F}lare\;\underline{T}elescope$) installed at BOAO(Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory) is purposed for observing solar active regions using four refractors on single mount with a $400"\times300"$ field of view: Two refractors with a diameter of 15cm(f15) are observe the white light and $H\alpha$, and the other two refractors with a diameter of 20cm(f8) are observe the magnetic field distribution and Doppler shifts at the solar chromosphere. Three Lyot filters, one of the most important observational instruments, are installed on the optical rails for VMG, LMG, and $H\alpha$ that possible to very narrow pass band observation under high precision stability of temperature. From the combination of KD*P and quarter wave plate in the Lyot filter possible observe the magnetic fields strength and doppler shifts by using the characteristics of polarization components. In this paper, we introduce the basic characteristics, optical system, and monitor system of the SOFT.

  • Optically isotropic liquid crystal (LC) mixture such as blue-phase LC and nanostructured LC composites exhibit the advantages of fast response time, high contrast ratio and wide-viewing angle due to the induced birefringence along the horizontal electric field. Utilizing this mixture, a novel single cell gap in-plane switching-type polymer-stabilized blue-phase transflective liquid crystal display by embedding the nanowire grid polarizer as a polarization-dependent reflective polarizer in the R region is proposed. This device can be used as a normal black mode without any quarter-wave plate or patterned in-cell phase retarder. Moreover, the transmittance is identical to the reflectance so that it will be suitable for single gamma driving. Detailed electro-optic performances, such as voltage-dependent light efficiency and viewing angle of the proposed device configuration, are investigated.

Retardation Free In-plane Switching Liquid Crystal Display with High Speed and Wide-view Angle

  • In this paper, we propose an in-plane switching (IPS) mode for liquid crystal displays (LCDs) that, in principle, is free of retardation of the LC cell. Basically, the optical configuration of the LC cell consists of an A-plate and an LC layer for switching between the dark and bright states. We could achieve a fast response time compared with the conventional in-plane LC cell because the free retardation condition of the proposed LC cell enables us to reduce the cell gap even by quarter-wave retardation without any change of the optimized LC material in the transmissive mode. Experiments for verification of the proposed in-plane switching LC cells have shown a significant reduction of the rising time and falling time simultaneously due to the small cell gap. Furthermore, we also proposed an optical configuration for wide viewing property of the retardation free IPS LCD by applying the optical films. We proved the wide-view property of the retardation free IPS LCD by comparing its optical luminance with the calculated optical property of the conventional IPS LCD.
