Lycorma delicatula (White 1845), which has been recently introduced into Korea, is a notorious pest on grapes. This invasive insect has rapidly spread throughout central and southern Korea. To date, we have no behavioral or population genetics information, such as invasion routes and subsequent dispersal rates in Korea, to help understand and control populations of L. delicatula. Here, we have developed 15 novel microsatellite loci for L. delicatula. The isolated loci were polymorphic, with 2 to 19 alleles in 42 individuals from a single population in Korea. The analyses revealed that all 42 individuals had different multilocus genotypes with heterozygosity ranging from 0.214 to 0.866. Eleven of the 15 loci did not deviate significantly from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The isolated markers will facilitate population genetic studies of L. delicatula.

Lycorma delicatula, known as spotted lanternfly, is a planthopper native to Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, India and South China. This species damages local fruit trees and has spread rapidly in South Korea in recent years. The purpose of this study is to present the methods and estimation results pertaining to the risk of invasive species like Lycorma delicatula. We used a partial budget (PB) method to assess direct income reduction of farm households and a partial equilibrium (PE) model to examine social welfare change from the outbreak of Lycorma delicatula. We also estimated the future economic impacts of Lycorma delicatula under various climate scenarios considering habitat suitability. As climate change progresses, domestic ecosystems are expected to become increasingly vulnerable to pest outbreaks leading to further economic damage. We believe that this study can be a base to evaluate efficiency of the national pest control and quarantine system.
The blueberry gall midge, Dasineura oxycoccana (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), has known as a key pest of blueberries in the southeastern United States, Europe and Canada. It can cause considerable damage to developing flower buds and also injure vegetative growth by distorting and blackening shoot tips on blueberries. In 2010, same damage symptoms were observed on blueberries, Vaccinium spp., in Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do. And, D. oxycoccana was identified from the farms and it was designated as a quarantine pest in Korea. The occurrences of D. oxycoccana and its damages were investigated in the blueberry greenhouse in 2011. Nationwide survey revealed that most of the blueberry greenhouses were infected by D. oxycoccana. An environment-friendly management method for D. oxycoccana was developed by changing soil environment in the blueberry greenhouse.
Many forest pests have caused problems for wood quarantine. The fumigation activity of phosphine ($PH_3$) was examined for the adults of three wood-boring insect pests. The $LCT_{99}$ values for Platypus koryoensis, Cryphalus fulvus, and Xyleborus mutilates were 3.192, 0.994, and $0.501mg{\cdot}h/L$ at $20^{\circ}C$, respectively. The effectiveness of $PH_3$ was increasingly time dependent for all doses tested in all three species. In particular, P. koryoensis showed 100% mortality at doses higher than 0.4 mg/L 7 days after fumigation. These results indicate that methyl bromide could be substituted for $PH_3$ for adults of these three species of wood pest.
Temporary control schedules were tested at sweet persimmon orchards to development new control programs to meet the quarantine repuirements of America in 2001 and 2002. The 'MRL-type control orchards' were sprayed with chemicals which were possibly adaptable to the pome trees in America. A control schedule consisted of those chemicals registered for persimmon in Korea was incorporated in the 'domestic-type control orchards'. The efficacy of these two control type against insect pests was compared with that of a conventional control schedule. In 2001, MRL orchard and domestic orchard were sprayed 7 and 6 times, and two conventional orchards were 6 and 9 times, respectively. In 2002, acaricide was added once to the MRL orchards at late September to reduce the density of mites on harvested fruits. However no insecticide to plant bug control could be applied to the MRL orchards, because no insecticide against bugs was registered for pome trees in America. This resulted in 7 times of applications in MRL and domestic orchards. The conventional orchard was sprayed 9 times. Only the occurrence of the peach pyralid moth, Dichocrocis puntiferalis (PPM) out of 4 quarantine inset species was observed. The PPM was observed during growing season in MRL, domestic, and conventional orchards. However no fruits damaged by PPM larvae were observed after mid October and after harvest. In 2002 only 1 fruit out of 1,350 fruits inspected in June was damaged by the larvae of PPM at MRL orchards. A fungus-feeding mites and collembolan were under calyx of vested fruits. In 2001 they were found on 45.3% of harvested fruits at MRL orchard. However the percentage of fruits with mites in 2002 was greatly reduced to 3.5% at MRL orchard, presumably because of a added application of acaricide at late September. However percentage of fruits damage by hemipteran bugs at harvesting time was quite high 11.3 % at MRL orchards, because no application of insecticide against plant bugs.
Except for a cosmopolitan and major pest of apples, Tetranychus urticae Koch, Tetranychus mites in Korea such as T. viennensis Zaher, T. kanzawai Kishida, and T. truncams Ehara have been considered as quarantine pests by Canada and United States. Even though these mites are not feeders on apples, they are suspected to attach accidentally on apple h i t s in autumn as females enter the diapause. The characters used to identify Tetranychus mites have been confined to the shape of aedeagus in adult male. To develope a fast and accurate alternative identification protocol applied to hibernating female mites on apples, their mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) were examined to find out any polymorphisms to discriminate each species from the other ones. Three pairs of primers for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were used to amplify cytochrome oxidase subunit I (CO-I) coding region in mitochondrial DNA5 of four species of Tetranycus mites. The longest amplified product was estimated its size as about 680 bp. Digestion with restriction enzymes, AluI, Ddel, and Sau3A, showed length polymorphisms, which will he useful as diagnostic markers to identify Tetranychus mites. Schematic restriction maps in amplified region were shown for each species.

Tropical plants of mango(Mangefera indica), dragon fruit(Hylocereus undatus), and atemoya(Annona cherimola ${\times}$ A. squamosa) are cultivated in Jeju, Korea. A pest survey on those tropical fruits was conducted from 2008 to 2011. Major pests of Mango were thrips, aphid, mealybug, and lepidoptera species. Thrips palmi and Scirtothrips dorsalis were the most important pests in mango fields. T. palmi mainly injured the leaf but S. dorsalis injured the leaf and fruit. Lepidoptera mango pests injured leaves but some larva of Adoxophyes honmai injured fruit surface around the stem. Aphid pests, Aphis gossypii and Myzus persicae, injured the shoots and Pseudococcus kraunhiae occurred on the stem and fruit. Ant species, A. gossypii, and S. litura, were important pests on dragon fruit. Ants and aphid occurred and injured the stem, flower, and fruit. Spodoptera litura larva severely injured the stem. Among the atemoya pests, S. litura and Homona magnanima caused severe damage.

As an alternative to methyl bromide (MeBr) fumigation for the control of quarantine pests of pears (Pyrus pyrifolia cv. Niitaka), the effect of gamma irradiation (0.5~3 kGy) was comparatively investigated. Insects found in the pears were identified Tetranychus urticae Koch and Panonychus ulmi Koch, which were of quarantine importance. These insects were easily destroyed by MeBr even one day after fumigation. Whereas irradiation at 0.5~2 kGy was not enough to reach the mortality, even if 3 kGy showed the same mortality as MeBr after 17 days of treatment. Respiration of pears was stimulated by both increased doses of irradiation and MeBr fumigation. The rates of surface blackening and core browning were accelerated by MeBr rather than higher doses of irradiation. While the changes in flesh firmness and surface color were more apparent in irradiated samples at above 2 kGy than MeBr. There were negligible differences in the contents of titratable acidity, acetaldehyde and ethanol by the treatment conditions except for 3 kGy-irradiated group. Sensory evaluation showed that mere than 1 kGy was the threshold to induce the significant changes in quality of pears.

Temporary control schedules were tested at sweet persimmon orchards to development new control programs to meet the quarantine requirements of USA in 2002. The 'USA export-type control orchards' were spayed with pesticides (azoxystrobin, carbaryl, cyhexatin, fenarimol, mancozeb, methoxyfenozide, spinosad and trifluxistrobin) which were possibly adaptable to the poem trees in USA. Pesticide residues in the sweet persimmon fruits harvested from USA export-type control orchards were analyzed. Azoxystrobin, mancozeb, trifloxystrobin, spinosad, carbaryl, and cyhexatin were not detected by the experimental methods. The residues of fenarimol and methoxyfenozide in sweet persimmon of USA export-type control orchards were 0.016-0.020 ppm and 0.022-0.029 ppm, respectively. These levels are quite below the maximum residue limit level of USA (below 0.1 ppm in fenarimol and 7 ppm in methoxyfenozide). These results suggest that new control programs could be developed by modifying the USA export-type control schedule tested in this study to meet the quarantine requirements of USA, if we could suppress the damage of plant bugs.

Industrial insect is defined as the insect utilized in industries that creates added value. Most of the industrial insects used in Korea are exotic species that are introduced through artificial means. Despite the rapid expansion of market for industrial insects, the system for risk assessment of industrial insects is not being adequately conducted. Although Korea carries out a risk assessment for the species designated as disease and insect pest by Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency, far too little consideration is being given to overall ecosystem, as the control system is covered in the Plant Quarantine Law. To solve this problem, we analyzed the Korean risk assessment system and looked at systems in other countries. The results show that it is essential for stakeholders to reach an agreement to set up fundamental directions for the system. Unless the integration system of taxonomical and ecological information is prepared, the ecological risk assessment should be conservative to protect ecosystems and should also follow the precautionary principle. It also requires cooperation among the ministries. In addition, the results indicated that a differentiation between risk assessment and screening is urgent. Several solutions such as setting up clear objectives in both assessment and screening stages, target species, steering organization and assessment criteria assessment systems from were proposed as practical institutional strategies. Among many foreign countries the assessment system from Ireland equally considers various factors such as economical, ecological safety and management aspects, It is also based on precautionary principle to fulfil its original purpose. It was suggested that the Ireland system would be the best reference that can be modified and applied into the Korean system by considering distinct characteristics of the industrial insects.
