  • This paper proposes fault tolerant gaits of a quadruped robot with feet of flat shape. Fault tolerant gaits make it possible for a legged robot to continue static walking against a leg failure. In the previous researches, it was assumed that a legged robot had feet that have point contact with the surface. When the robot is endowed with feet having flat shape, fault tolerant gaits can show better performance compared with the former gaits, especially in terms of the stride length and gait stability. In this paper, fault tolerant gaits of a quadruped robot against a locked joint failure are addressed in straight-line motion and crab walking, respectively.

  • In this paper, an algorithm of fault tolerant gaits for a quadruped robot is proposed for the purpose of tolerating a locked joint failure. The robot can continue its walking after a locked failure occurs to a joint of a leg by the proposed algorithm. In particular, a periodic gait is proposed as a special form of the proposed algorithm and its existence and efficiency are analytically proven.

  • Water running animals such as basilisk lizards have an advantage of high-speed movement and high power efficiency on water; so researchers in robotic fields have been interested in the water running locomotion. This paper presents prototype-design and experimental study on the fourand six-legged water running robot. Based on the previously proposed quadruped water running robot, we assemble a hexapedal water running robot. The legs of the water running robot are designed based on four-bar parallel link for repeated motion along to pre-defined path. Stability performance of the quadruped and hexapedal water running robot are investigated by experiments on rolling criterion. As a result, hexapedal robot performs better stability than quadruped robot. Based on the hexapedal robot design, we are planning to optimize the position of legs and operating frequency.

  • The stability, energetic efficiency and walking volume are affected by the geometric structure of legs of a walking robot. A quadruped walking robot is considered to have large stability margin among the walking robots and pantograph leg permits large walk stroke and mutually independent vertical and horizontal movements, but the kinematic characteristics are difficult to analyze. Graphical method may be useful to characterize three dimensional legged motion of the pantograph mechanism. We present the modelling method for three different quadruped robots with pantograph legs that have different joints mechanism. The modeled robots are animated by a path that is planned with respect to the center of body. In particular, graphical animation incorporates leg control to rotation and side walking and uses the window of Sun-3 system for displaying joint information.

  • The effects of the statistical properties of the Coulomb friction coefficients on the dynamic responses of a galloping quadruped robot are investigated in this paper. In general, the Coulomb friction coefficients are assumed to be deterministic for a controller design to achieve required motion characteristics. However, the friction coefficients between the ground and the robot legs are not constant in reality. Therefore, statistical characteristics of the friction coefficients need to be considered for a multi-body modeling of the robot galloping on the ground. The effects of the statistical properties on the dynamic responses of the quadruped robots are investigated.

  • This paper proposes the trot gait pattern generation and online control methods for a quadruped robot to carry heavy loads and to move fast on uneven terrain. The trot pattern is generated from the frequency modulated pattern generation method based on the frequency modulated oscillator in order for the legged robots to be operated outdoor environment with the static and dynamic mobility. The efficiency and performance of the proposed method are verified through computer simulations and experiments using qRT-1/-2. In the experiments, qRT-2 which has two front legs driven by hydraulic linear actuators and two rear casters is used. The robot can trot at the speed up to 1.3 m/s on even surface, walk up and down the 20 degree inclines, and walk at 0.7 m/s on uneven surface. Also it can carry over 100 kg totally including 40 kg payload.

  • This paper introduces a new approach to develop a fast gait for quadruped robot using GP(genetic programming). Planning gaits for legged robots is a challenging task that requires optimizing parameters in a highly irregular and multidimensional space. Several recent approaches have focused on using GA(genetic algorithm) to generate gait automatically and shown significant improvement over previous results. Most of current GA based approaches used pre-selected parameters, but it is difficult to select the appropriate parameters for the optimization of gait. To overcome these problems, we proposed an efficient approach which optimizes joint angle trajectories using genetic programming. Our GP based method has obtained much better results than GA based approaches for experiments of Sony AIBO ERS-7 in Webots environment.

  • Improvement in gait stability of fault-tolerant gaits for quadruped robots is addressed in this paper. The previously developed fault-tolerant gait gives a quadruped robot the ability to continue its walk against the occurrence of a leg failure. But it has a drawback of having marginal gait stability, which may lead to tumbling when the robot body's center of gravity is perturbed. To overcome such a drawback, a novel fault-tolerant gait is presented in this paper that generates positive stability margin against a locked joint failure, in which a joint of a leg is locked in a known place. Positive stability margin is obtained by adjusting foot positions of supporting legs between leg swing sequences. The advantages of the proposed fault-tolerant gait are discussed by comparing with the previous gait in terms of gait stability, stride length and gait velocity.

  • Two gait generation methods using GP(genetic programming) and CPG(Central Pattern Generator) are compared to develop a fast locomotion for quadruped robot. GP based technique is an effective way to generate few joint trajectories instead of the locus of paw positions and lots of stance parameters. The CPGs are neural circuits that generate oscillatory output from a input coming from the brain. Optimization for two proposed methods are executed and analysed using Webots simulation for the quadruped robot which is built by Bioloid. Furthermore, simulation results for two proposed methods are experimented in real quadruped robot and performances and motion features of GP and CPG based methods are investigated.
