  • Purpose: The ratio of straw to grain mass as a function of cutting height affects combine efficiency and power consumption and is an important input parameter to combine simulation models. An equation was developed to predict straw to grain ratios for wheat as a function of cutting height. Methods: Two mass functions, one for straw and one for grain, were developed using regression techniques and measured data collected in west Texas during the summer, and used to predict the straw to grain ratio. Results: Three equations were developed to facilitate the simulation of a combine during wheat harvest. Two mass functions, one for straw and one for grain, were also developed; a quadratic equation describes the straw mass with an $R^2$ of 0.992. An S-shaped curve describes the mass function for grain with an $R^2$ of 0.957. An equation for straw to grain ratio of wheat was developed as a function of cutting height. The straw to grain ratio has an $R^2$ value of 0.947. Conclusions: In all cases, the equations had $R^2$ values above 0.94 and were significant at the 99.9 percent probability level (alpha = 0.001). Although all three equations are useful, the grain mass and straw to grain ratio equations will have direct application in combine simulation models.

  • When we consider an optimal design to predict the response corresponding to the point outside the design region, we are extremely careful about choosing the design criteria for selecting the support points. The assumed model and its accompanying error structure should be assumed to extend beyond the design region for the selected design criteria to be valid. Thus, we modify the existing design criteria such as extrapolation-optimality to be suited to those situations. We propose some maximin approaches in this paper. Simple and quadratic regression models are tested to find the basic characteristics of such maximin approaches. Some main findings are discussed in the conclusion.

  • Small scale time-course microarray experiments are those which have a small number of time points. They comprise about 80 percent of all time-course microarray experiments conducted up to 2005. Several statistical methods for the small scale time-course microarray experiments have been proposed. In this paper we applied three methods, namely, QR method, maSigPro method and STEM, to a real time-course microarray experiment which had six time points. We compared the performance of these three methods based on a simulation study and concluded that STEM outperformed, in general, in terms of power when the FDR was set to be 5%.

  • We examined the characteristics of temperature variation in Seoul between 1961 to 2008 using the spectral heteroscedastic model. The mean function in the propsed model explains the season effect using periodic functions and the overall increase using the quadratic regression spline. The variance function also had periodic functions to explain the seasonality of variance. We found that there has been annual mean temperature increase by about $1.5^{\circ}C$ for the last 48 years. The increase of annual mean temperature was mainly caused by the increase in winter, which made the amplitude decreased.

  • The aim of this research was to apply experimental design methodology in the optimization condition of electrochemical oxidation of Rhodamine B(RhB). The reactions of electrochemical oxidation were mathematically described as a function of parameters amounts of current, NaCl dosage, pH and time being modeled by the use of the central composite design, which was used for fitting quadratic response surface model. The application of response surface methodology using central composite design(CCD) technique yielded the following regression equation, which is an empirical relationship between the removal efficiency of RhB and test variable in actual variables: RhB removal (%) = 3.977 + 23.279$\cdot$Current + 49.124$\cdot$NaCI - 5.539$\cdot$pH - 8.863$\cdot$time - 22.710$\cdot$Current$\cdot$NaCl + 5.409$\cdot$Current$\cdot$time + 2.390$\cdot$NaCl$\cdot$time + 1.061$\cdot$pH$\cdot$time - $0.570{\cdot}time^2$. The model predicted also agree with the experimentally observed result($R^2$ = 91.9%).

  • This study analyzed the lowest production cost and the greatest profit to be obtained from marketing hogs to determine the optimal operation scale for family-owned farrow-to-finish farms. Data were collected from 39 farrow-to-finish farms with 500 to 5,000 inventories for two consecutive years, and treated with GLM and quadratic regression models using the REG procedure. Analysis results indicated that farms capable of marketing 2,933 and 3,286 hogs annually had the lowest production cost and the greatest profit, respectively. Further analysis attributed the lowest production cost or the highest return in farms with an optimal scale of 3,000 to a higher survival rate of the herd, as well as lower expenses in veterinary medicine, labor, utilities and fuel, transportation, and depreciation. A similar feed conversion efficiency was observed for all the farms studied. Obviously, the cost efficiencies were associated with the economy of the operation scale of hog production until it reached 3,000 hogs marketed annually for a family-run unit. Beyond the optimal scale of 3,000 hogs, good stockmanship was more difficult to maintain and the herd management deteriorated as increasing mortality confirms. It is conclude that, unless advanced management is applied, the operation scale should not expand beyond 3,000 hogs.

  • Respiratory tubes with the length of 35 mm and the diameter of 10, 15, and 20 mm were made and both the static($P_{S}$) and dynamic($P_{D}$) pressures were measured for steady flow rates ranging 1-12 l/sec. Regression analysis resulted successful fitting of $P_{S}$ and $P_{D}$ data with quadratic equations with correlation coefficients higher than 0.99. The measurement standards of the American Thoracic Society (ATS) were applied to $P_{S}$ data, which demonstrated the smallest tube diameter of 15 mm to satisfy the ATS standards. The maximum $P_{D}$ value of the velocity type transducer with the diameter of 15 mm was estimated to be 75 cm$H_{2}O$, implying approximately 7 times larger sensitivity than the widely used pneumotachometer. These results showed that the velocity type respiratory air flow transducer is a unique device accomplishing miniaturization with the sensitivity increased, thus would be of great advantage to develop portable devices.

  • Response surface methodology (RSM) in combination with a 17-run central composite design (CCD) was applied to optimize the non-catalytic hydrolysis of lard using subcritical water to produce fatty acids (FA). The effects of three variables including temperature, molar ratio of water to oil and time, and their relationship on FA content were investigated. A quadratic regression model was employed to predict the FA contents. Optimum reaction conditions for maximizing the FA content were obtained as follows: reaction temperature of $288.5^{\circ}C$, molar ratio of water to oil of 39.5 and reaction time of 29.5 min. Under the optimum conditions, the predicted and experimentally obtained FA contents were 97.06% and 96.99%, respectively.

  • To enhance the performance of privatized firms and state-owned enterprises, Vietnamese government set up a specialized monitoring body named State Capital Investment Corporation (SCIC) in 2006 to supervise their performance. This motivated us to conduct this study to investigate the effective control of SCIC on privatized firms' performance. We collected the annual reports of 500 non-financial privatized firms listed on HSX and HNX during the period from 2007 to 2017 from Thomson Reuters. Observations with missing values were removed and trimming outliers were implemented resulting in a dataset comprising of 4146 firm-year observations. We applied a quadratic regression model of state ownership on firms' performance, and applied the method of Baron and Kenny (1986) to test the moderating effect of SCIC control. To fix "selection bias" that may occur and result in endogeneity of moderator (M), we utilized the PSM technique to analyze the marginal effect of the moderator (SCIC) on privatized firms' performance. Our findings indicate a positive moderating role of SCIC on the relationship between the state ownership and firms' performance. This implies that there is a positive effect of liberating the management of the private firms from government control, which also means that lesser the intervention of government in the day to day operational activities of a private firm, better the performance of a privatized firm is.

  • The objective of this study was to determine the optimal conditions for preparation of cooked brown rice by blending brown rice, white rice and glutinous rice to improve the palatability. Formulations composed of brown rice (10~100%), white rice (0~90%) and glutinous rice (0~90%) were generated from an extreme-vertices of mixture experimental design, which showed ten experimental points for brown rice, with white rice and glutinous rice as the independent variables. The sensory evaluation, color, and texture profile analysis (TPA) of cooked brown rice and pasting characteristics of blending cereals flour were measured as response variables. Regression analysis showed that all responsible variables fit linear, quadratic or special cubic models (p<0.1), except for the cohesiveness of TPA. The goals of optimization of the blending ratio of brown rice, white rice and glutinous rice were given as appearance, flavor, texture and overall acceptability (lower: 5.50, target: 6.62). The optimal conditions were determined to be 34.55% brown rice, 42.71% white rice and 22.74% glutinous rice.
