  • As compared with wired network environment, mobile VOD service in wireless network environment is difficult to guarantee the quality of VOD service due to the limitation of the system resources. Moreover, the wireless network has small bandwidth resources and short access range so that has limitations for providing the service to a large number of mobile clients. The limited battery capacity of a mobile device becomes an obstacle to mobile clients for enjoying VOD service for a long time. Therefore, these drawbacks should be considered in developing mobile VOD applications. This paper proposes a new technique for improving QoS of mobile VOD service by jointly use of broadcasting technique, which can provide VOD service to a large number of mobile clients simultaneously, and bursty communication technique, which can reduce the power consumption of a mobile device. With having these two techniques, streaming data are divided into segments, each of which is grouped into a particular packet and then transmitted at a time in the busty communication manner. In the performance evaluation, the power consumption on WNIC of a mobile device can be reduced by over 80%, and the initial service delay can be reduced in proportion to the number of channels compared with the existing staggered broadcasting technique.

  • Background: Pain is one of the most important consequences of spinal cord injury (SCI). It may affect several aspects of life, especially the quality of life (QoL). Hence, this study was conducted to establish an understanding of pain and its correlates and effects on patients with SCI in our community. Methods: In a cross-sectional study, 58 male veterans suffering from SCI were admitted to our center for a regular follow-up. Demographic and SCI-related descriptive information were gathered using a self-reported questionnaire. To evaluate the patients' pain quality and the effect of pain on daily life, a questionnaire in 3 parts of lumbar, cervical and shoulder pain was administered. EuroQoL questionnaire and General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) 12 were also used to assess the patients' QoL. Results: The mean age of the participants was $45.91{\pm}6.69$ with mean injury time of $25.54{\pm}5.91$. forty-four patients (75.9%) reported pain, including lumbar pain (63%), cervical pain (39%) and shoulder pain (51%). The presence of pain was associated with lower QoL. Patients with lumbar pain reported a significant amount of pain affecting their daily life and this effect was higher in patients with lower GHQ score or anxiety/depressive disorder. Conclusions: Musculoskeletal pain, is a common complaint in veterans with SCI and is inversely associated with functioning and general health status. Lumbar and shoulder pain affects patient's daily living more than cervical pain.

  • Background Shortage of speech and language therapists results in lack of speech services. The aims of this study were to find the effectiveness of a combination speech therapy model at Level IV: General speech and language pathologist (GSLP) and Level V: Specific speech and language pathologist (SSLP) in reduction of the number of articulation errors and promotion the quality of life (QoL) for children with cleft palate with or without cleft lip (CP ± L). Methods Fifteen children with CP ± L, aged 4 years 1 month to 10 years 9 months (median = 76 months; minimum:maximum = 49:129 months) were enrolled in this study. Pre- and post-assessment included oral peripheral examination; articulation tests via Articulation Screening Test, Thai Universal Parameters of Speech Outcomes for People with Cleft Palate, Hearing Evaluation, The World Health Organization Quality of Life Brief_Thai (WHOQOL-BRIEF-THAI) version questionnaire for QoL were performed. Speech therapy included a 3-day intensive speech camp by SSLP, five 30-minute speech therapy sessions by a GSLP, and five 1-day follow-up speech camps by SSLP that provided four 45-minute speech therapy sessions for each child. Results Post-articulation revealed statistically significant reduction of the numbers of articulation errors at word, sentence, and screening levels (median difference [MD] = 3, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 2-5; MD = 6, 95% CI = 4.5-8; MD = 2.25, 95% CI = 1.5-3, respectively) and improvement of QoL. Conclusion A speech task force consisting of a combination of Level IV: GSLP and Level V: SSLP could significantly reduce the number of articulation errors and promote QoL.

  • Supporting QoS over multihop wireless mesh networks is difficult because end-to-end delay increases quickly with the increasing number of hops. This paper introduces a novel multichannel time-division multiple-access media access control (McTMAC) protocol that can help to efficiently reduce delay over multihop networks. Performance evaluation results demonstrate that McTMAC outperforms existing alternative protocols. The max-delay can be reduced by as much as 60% by using McTMAC.

  • This paper analyzes network selection issues of secondary users (SUs) in Cooperative Cognitive Radio Networks (CRNs) by utilizing Queuing Model. Coordinating with Handover Cost-Based Network selection, this paper also addresses an opportunity for the secondary users (SUs) to enhance QoS as well as economics efficiency. In this paper, network selection of SUs is the optimal association between Overall System Time Minimization Problem evaluation of Secondary Connection (SC) and Handover Cost-Based Network selection. This will be illustrated by simulation results.

  • The growing usage of multimedia communication applications with specific bandwidth and real-time delivery requirements has created the needs for quality of service(QoS). In response to the growing demand for an integrated services, the Reservation Protocol(RSVP) has been designed to exchange resource reservation among routers in the internet. RSVP protocol provides the quality of service for real-time applications but the network efficiency is reduced because of the limited bandwidth. In order to use network resources efficiently. We compare the resource efficiency of traditional reservation methods with that of the proposed method and evaluate the performance of the internet phone.

  • In this paper, DSPA(Dynamic Signalling Period Allocation) algorithm that has been proposed by the authors for MAC(Medium Access Control) protocols in W-ATM(Wireless Asynchronous Transfer Mode) is applied to mixed traffic conditions composed of various service classes. We investigate the bandwidth utilization efficiency and quality of service(QoS) fulfillment by the DSPA algorithm used in W-ATM MAC protocols. Simulation results indicate that the DSPA algorithm significantly increases the throughput of the system with the minimum control overhead. Moreover, QoS of each service class is well satisfied by proper and fair channel allocation to different service classes according to their requirements.

  • This paper proposes a fuzzy-based random access controller with a superimposed frame structure (F$^2$RAC) fur voice/data-integrated wireless networks. F$^2$RAC adopts mini-slot technique for reducing contention cost, and these mini-slots of which number may dynamically vary from one frame to the next as a function of the traffic load are further partitioned into two regions for access requests coming from voice and data traffic with their respective QoS requirements. And F$^2$RAC is designed to properly determine the access regions and permission probabilities for enhancing the data packet delay while ensuring the voice packet dropping probability constraint. It mainly consists of the estimator with Pseudo-Bayesian algorithm and fuzzy logic controller with Sugeno-type of fuzzy rules. Simulation results prove that F$^2$RAC can guarantee QoS requirement of voice and provide the highest throughput efficiency and the smallest data packet delay amongst the different alternatives including PRMA[1], IPRMA[2], and SIR[3].
