Biochar is a carbon rich solid produced by the pyrolysis of biomass such as energy crops, forestry residues, and wood wastes. Biochar returned to soil is to mitigate climate change and the feedstock of wood wastes reduces fossil fuel consumption as well as disposal costs. This study was practiced to evaluate a biochar system by gasification in terms of global warming regarding the soil application of the produced biochar. Life cycle assessment methodology was used to analyze the environmental impacts of the system, and the functional unit was 1 tonne of wood wastes. The result shows that the biochar system by using wood wastes as feedstock produces 4.048E-01 $kgCO_2-eq$ from the pre-treatment process as chipping and drying, 4.579E-01 $kgCO_2-eq$ from the pyrolysis process, and 9.070E-02 $kgCO_2-eq$ from the spreading to agricultural land, therefore total 9.534E-01 $kgCO_2-eq$ are generated. About 252 kg of $CO_2$ is still stored in the produced biochar in soil after carbon offsetting of the system. Therefore, the net carbon of the system is -251 kg of $CO_2-eq$.

Objectives: This is a case of air exposure assessment conducted after researchers complained of headaches and odor due to residual substances from fire extinguishing agents spread throughout the laboratory due to a malfunction of the fire extinguishing facility. Methods: A component analysis was conducted on the residual substances of a fire extinguishing agent spread in a laboratory using Py-GC-MS (pyrolysis gas chromatography mass spectrometry) at the research institute's own central equipment research center. As a result of the component analysis, several types of substances were detected. Among these, five types of substances subject to work environment measurement in the aromatic hydrocarbon series, which can affect headaches and odor, were selected as substances subject to exposure assessment in the air, and the measurement and analysis methods of the target substances were conducted in accordance with the KOSHA Guide for each substance. Conclusions: The measurement results showed that all 5 types of substances were not detected at locations A, B, and C. This is believed to be the result of the residual substances in the fire extinguishing agent being measured when approximately two months had elapsed after being exposed to the test bench, and the substances already exposed had volatilized and disappeared. In this survey, it is believed that the measurement process is more important than the measurement results.
In this study, the physical and chemical analyses of petroleum residues (pyrolized fuel oil, PFO) were conducted and major components were selected to investigate their fire and explosion characteristics. Major component distribution areas of the PFO were identified via the GC-SIMDIS and MALDI-TOF analyses. In addition, the qualitative analysis of major component distribution areas was performed by GC-MS analysis. Major components of pyrolysis residue were selected based on the results of various analyses such as EA, SARA and TGA. As a result, benzene, toluene and xylene were selected as major components. Finally, the process hazard analysis software tool (PHAST) analysis was performed to investigate the range of maximum damage effect in case of fire and explosion. Toluene presented the highest risk due to the radiation effect of $227kW/m^2$ and 118 m in the case of jet fire. Xylene and benzene showed the maximum radiant heat values of 114 and $151kW/m^2$, respectively. It was also confirmed from the analysis of pasquill stability and wind speed that the radiant heat increased up to 55% according to wind speed in benzene, which was considered to be a main factor increasing the influence range.

Furfural is a versatile derivative. It can be utilized for a building-block of furfuryl alcohol production and a component of fuels or liquid alkanes. But in bio-process, furfural is a critical compound because it inhibits cell growth and metabolism. Furfural could be converted from xylose and usually produced from biomass in which hemicellulose is abundant. In this study, furfural production from miscanthus was performed and utilization of miscanthus residue was consequently conducted. At first, hydrolysis for investigation of miscanthus composition and furfural production was performed using sulfuric acid. Previously, we optimized dilute acid pretreatment condition for miscanthus pretreatment and the condition was found to be about 15 min of reaction time, 1.5% of acid concentration and about $140^{\circ}C$ of temperature and 60% (about 7 g/L) of xylose was solubilized from miscanthus. Using the xylose, furfural production was conducted as second step. Approximately $160{\sim}200^{\circ}C$ of temperature was accompanied with the hydrolysis for pyrolysis of biomass. When the investigated condition; $180^{\circ}C$ of temperature, 20 min of reaction time and 2% of acid concentration was operated for furfural production, furfural productivity was reached to be 77% of theoretical maximum. After reaction, residue of miscanthus was utilized as feedstock of ethanol fermentation. Residue was well washed using water and saccharified using hydrolysis enzymes. Hydrolysate (glucose) from saccharification was utilized for the carbon source of Saccharomyces cervisiae K35.

Integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) is an efficient and environment-friendly power generation system which is capable of burning low-ranked coals and other renewable resources such as biofuels, petcokes and residues. In this study some process modeling on a conceptual entrained flow gasifier was conducted using the ASPEN Plus process simulator. This model is composed of three major steps; initial coal pyrolysis, combustion of volatile components, and gasification of char particles. One of the purposes of this study is to develop an effective and versatile simulation model applicable to numerous configurations of coal gasification systems. Our model does not depend on the hypothesis of chemical equilibrium as it can trace the exact reaction kinetics and incorporate the residence time calculation of solid particles in the reactors. Comparisons with previously reported models and experimental results also showed that the predictions by our model were pretty reasonable in estimating the products and the conditions of gasification processes. Verification of the accuracy of our model was mainly based upon how closely it predicts the syngas composition in the gasifier outlet. Lastly the effects of change oxygen are studied by sensitivity analysis using the developed model.
The characteristics of product materials obtained from thermal degradation of low-qualify pyrolytic oil were investigated in this study. The reactants were produced by pyrolysis of mixed plastic waste with film type in a commercial rotary kiln reaction system. The properties of reactants were measured by elemental analysis, calorimetry analysis and SIMDIST analyst. The result of degradation experiments with different reaction temperature programs was discussed through product yields, cumulative yields and production rates of oil products. The multi-step reaction temperature program resulted in higher yields of product oils and lower yields of residues than one-step reaction temperature program. The product characteristics such as production yield and the rate of oil products etc. were influenced by reaction temperature program in the continuous thermal degradation.
Thermal behavior of poly (methyl methacrylate) was analyzed in the presence of tin (IV) chloride. Five different proportions - polymer to additive - were selected for casting films from common solvent. TG, DTG and DTA were employed to monitor thermal degradation of the systems. IR and py-GC-MS helped identify the decomposition products. The blends start degrading at a temperature lower than that of the neat polymer and higher than that of the pure additive. Complex formation between tin of additive and carbonyl oxygen (pendent groups of MMA units) was noticed in the films soon after the mixing of the components in the blends. The samples were also heated at three different temperatures to determine the composition of residues left after the expulsion of volatiles. The polymer, blends and additive exhibited a one step, two-step and three-step degradation, respectively. $T_0$ is highest for the polymer, lowest for the additive and is either $60^{\circ}C$ or $70^{\circ}C$ for the blends. The amount of residue increases down the series [moving from blend-1 (minimum additive concentration) to blend-5 (maximum additive concentration)]. For blend-1, it is 7% of the original mass whereas it is 16% for blend-5. $T_{max}$ also goes up as the concentration of additive in the blends is elevated. The complexation appears to be the cause of observed stabilization. Some new products of degradation were noted apart from those reported earlier. These included methanol, isobutyric acid, acid chloride, etc. Molecular-level mixing of the constituents and "positioning effect" of the additive may have brought about the formation of new compounds. Routes are proposed for the appearance of these substances. Horizontal burning tests were also conducted on polymer and blends and the results are discussed. Activation energies and reaction orders were calculated. Activation energy is highest for the polymer, i.e., 138.9 Kcal/mol while the range for blends is from 51 to 39 Kcal/mol. Stability zones are highlighted for the blends. The interaction between the blended parts seems to be chemical in nature.
BACKGROUND: Biochar is a solid material converted from agricultural biomass such as crop residues and pruning branch through pyrolysis under limited oxygen supply. Biochar consists of non-degradable carbon (C) double bonds and aromatic ring that are not readily broken down by microbial degradation in the soils. Due to the recalcitrancy of C in biochar, biochar application to the soils is of help in enhancing soil carbon sequestration in arable lands that might be a strategy of agricultural sector to mitigate climate change. METHODS AND RESULTS: Data were collected from studies on the effect of biochar application on soil C content conducted in East Asian countries including China, Japan and Korea under different experimental conditions (incubation, column, pot, and field). The magnitude of soil C storage was positively correlated (p < 0.001) with biochar application rate under field conditions, reflecting accumulation of recalcitrant black C in the biochar. However, The changes in soil C contents per C input from biochar (% per t/ha) were 6.80 in field condition, and 12.58 in laboratory condition. The magnitude of increment of soil C was lower in field than in laboratory conditions due to potential loss of C through weathering of biochar under field conditions. Biochar production condition also affected soil C increment; more C increment was found with biochar produced at a high temperature (over 450℃). CONCLUSION: This review suggests that biochar application is a potential measures of C sequestration in agricultural soils. However, as the increment of soil C biochar was affected by biochar types, further studies are necessary to find better biochar types for enhanced soil C storage.
Pottery filled with organic materials was excavated from the G-2 building site of Yongjangseong Fortress, Jingo, a relic of the Goryeo Dynasty. In this study, the characteristics of organic material were confirmed by a scientific analysis of organic material in pottery found at the palace in Yongjangseong, Jindo. In addition, it was intended to review the analysis method to identify the natural resin and to secure characteristic components(biomarkers) for each natural resin and use them as basic data in the future. The organic materials in the pottery were analyzed using attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy(ATR-FTIR) and gas chromatography mass spectrometry(GC-MS). The infrared spectral characteristics were estimated to be natural resin, and biomarkers of organic materials were identified as sesquiterpene-based compounds(C15H24, MW 204) and derivatives. The lacquer(T.vemicifluum) is composed mainly of alkenes, alkanes, and catechol. Pine resin(P.densiflora), on the other hand, is primarily composed of diterpenoid(abietic acid, pimaric acid) and Whangchil(yellow lacquer) is identified to have sesquiterpenes(such as selinene, muurolene, calamenene) as its main components. So, the organic material in the pottery can be identified as Whangchil by comparing their compounds with modern resin materials from Dendropanax. morbifera that correspond with the results. Whangchil, which is exuded from the Dendropanax. morbifera, has been used as a natural coating materials since ancient times, and it has been confirmed that the characteristic components are well preserved even 700 years later. It can be assumed that the interior Whangchil was stored not for use as a coating, but rather for ritual purposes when the building was constructed, because the pottery was found near the cornerstone. Furthermore, based on simplified sample preparation using pyrolysis-gas chromatography mass spectrometry(Py-GC-MS), the thermal decomposition products were found to be similar to the characteristic components, suggesting that this method can be applied to the identification of natural resins used in historic artifacts.
