  • A new type of solid and gel-state ionics based on siloxane pyridinium iodides was synthesized and used as electrolytes in dye-sensitized solar cells. The resulting electrolytes were characterized by $^1H$ NMR spectroscopy, TGA and diffusion coefficient. The synthesized siloxane pyridinium iodide electrolytes have characteristics of different chain length of siloxane moieties. The ion conductivities were given 2.7-3.2 S/cm. Among the three SiDPIs based electrolytes, DSSC employing the SiDPI2 gives an open circuit voltage of 0.704 V, a short-circuit current of 15.85 $mA/cm^2$ and conversion efficiency of 6.8% under light intensity of 100 $mW/cm^2$. In addition, the performance of the DSSCs showed relatively reasonable compared with the propylpyridinium iodide (PPI) electrolyte.

  • The electrical conductance and UV absorbance of 4,N-dimethyl Pridinium Iodide (NDMPI) were measured in the ethanol volume percentage, 95, 90, 80 and 60 of an ethanol-water mixture at 15, 25, 35 and $45^{\circ}C$. Ionic association constants(K) of NDMPI were evaluated in accordance with a combined method of conductance UV absorbance. The ion size parameter (${\gamma}_{\pm}$) and dipole momemt (${\mu}_{A+D-}$) of NDMPI were obtained from the values of K and dielectric constant. The ${\mu}_{A+D-}$- values were in good agreement with the values of transition moment(${\mu}_{mn}$) which is calculated form the UV peak values. The large negative values of the electrical enthalpy (${\Delta}H_{el}^{\circ}$) and entropy (${\Delta}H_{el}^{\circ}$ ) have proved that NDMPI had a positive hydration. The positive values of entropy (${\Delta}S^{\circ}$) means the formation of NDMPI ion goes with dehydration.

  • The ionic association constant (K) of N-methyl pyridinium iodide (NMPI) ion in several ethanol-water mixtures were determined by the combination of UV spectroscopy and conductance measurements using the Shedlovsky function as a correction factor. The measurement of electrical conductance and UV absorption were performed in 95, 90, 80 and 60 volume percentages of ethanol in the solvent mixture at 15, 25, 35 and 45 $({\pm}0.1)^{\circ}C$. The ion size parameter $(r_A+_D-)$ and the dipole moment $({\mu}_A+_D-)$ of NMPI ion were obtained from he linear plots of ln K vs. (1/D) and (D-1)/(2D+1), respectively. These ${\mu}_A+_D-$ values were in good agreement with the values of transition moment calculated from the equation, ${\mu}_{nm}=6.5168{\times}10^{-2}{\times}({\varepsilon}_{max}{\frac{\bar{\nu}_{\frac{1}{2}}}{\bar{\nu}_{max}})^{\frac{1}{2}}$ (Debye) which we have derived. The thermodynamic parameters indicate (1) that the water dipoles have an ordered rearrangement around the dipolar NMPI ions rather than the configuration existing in bulk free waters; and (2) that the equilibrium state between NMPI ion and its component ions are controlled by entropy.

  • The association constants (K) of 3,5,N-trimethyl pyridinium iodide in 95 volume percent ethanol-water mixed solvent were determined by a modified UV and conductance method at $25^{\circ},\;30{\circ},\;40{\circ}\;and\;50{\circ}C$ over the pressure range 1 to 2000 bars. The association process is enhanced with increasing pressure and decreasing temperature. From K values, we obtained the total partial molar volume change (${\Delta}V$) and some thermodynamic parameters. The electrostriction volume (${\Delta}V_{el}$) and intrinsic volume (${\Delta}V_{in}$) were also evaluated. The values of ${\Delta}V,\;{\Delta}V_{el},\;{\Delta}V_{in}$ are negative, negative and positive, respectively, and the absolute values of all these three decrease with increasing pressure and temperature. The ion-pair size (a) were varied 3 to 6 ${\AA}$, with pressure and temperature. The solvation number (n) decreased from 2 to 0.5 with increasing temperature.

  • The ionic association constants (K) of 2, N-dimethyl pyridinium iodide (2NDMPI) in 95 volume percentage ethanol-water mixture were determined by a modified UV and conductance method at $20^{\circ}C{\sim}50^{\circ}C$ under 1 to 2000 bars. The K values increase with increasing pressure and decrease with temperature. The total partial molar volume change (${\Delta}V$) has relatively small negative value and the absolute ${\Delta}V$ value decrease with increasing pressure and temperature. The ion size (a) and solvation number (n) of 2NDMPI were about 5 $\AA$ and changed from 1 to 3 with decreasing temperature. Other thermodynamic parameters such as enthalpy (${\Delta}H^{\circ}$) and entropy (${\Delta}S^{\circ}$) for the equilibrium of the 2NDMPI were evaluated. From all the parameters mentioned above, we came to conclusion that the electrostriction effect of 2NDMPI in the ethanol-water mixture is enhanced with increasing pressure and decreasing temperature.

  • In this study poly (1-methyl-4-vinylpyridinium iodide-co-styrene) membrane with pyridinium cation as a fixed carrier was synthesized and the transport characteristics of the membrane was examined over various factors. As the concentration of the fixed carrier in the membrane was increased, the water content was increased. Meanwhile, the counter current of the organic anion and the chloride ion, the following results were obtained. Initial flux of Cl-, organic anion and Na+ decreased with the increasing thickness of membrane, and as the concentration of the fixed carrier increases, the initial flux of Cl- and organic anion increase but the initial flux of Na+ decreased. The flux equation of the organic anion, CCl3COO- was obtained from saturation kinetics as follows;$V_{o}=\frac{(8.67{\times}10^{-5}){\cdot}[NaCl]}{9.63{\times}10^{-2}+[NaCl]} mol/cm^2h$

  • The ionic association constant(K) of 2,4,6, N-tetramethyl pyridinium iodide (TeMPI) in 95 volume percentage ethanol-water mixture were determined by a modified UV and conductance method at $25^{\circ}C$ to $50^{\circ}C$ under 1 to 2,000 bars. The K values increase with increasing pressure and have maximum value at $40^{\circ}C$. The partial molar volume hange (${\Delta}V$) has relatively small negative value and the absolute values of ${\Delta}$ are minimum at $40^{\circ}C$. The ion size parameter(a) of TeMPI have maximum value at $40^{\circ}C$. {\Delta}H^{\circ}$ values are zero, positive and negative at 40^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$ and $50^{\circ}C$ respectively. Other thermodynamic parameters such as the changes of standard entropy ({\Delta}S^{\circ}$) and free energy {\Delta}G^{\circ}$ were evaluated. From these experimental results, we came to conclusion that TeMPI is stabilized by the elevation of pressure and that of temperature below $40^{\circ}C$ but weakly dimerized at $40^{\circ}C$ because of the intermolecular hydrophobic interaction of eight methyl groups of two molecules. And it thermally decomposed above $50^{\circ}C$.

  • In this study, polysulfone was carboxylated(CPSf), as a method of introducing carboxyl group to polymer main chain using direct lithiation reaction. Then, poly(1-alkyl-4-vinylpyridinium iodide-co-divinylbenzene) (MeVpI-DVB) containing pyridinium cation which has an anion selectivity as a fixed carrier was synthesized. And polymer membranes were prepared by mixing CPSf and MeVpI-DVB. Characteristics and permeation of membranes were investigated. As a result of synthesizing CPSf/MeVpI-DVB, blend was formed, not new copolymer. As the content of CPSf amount increasing, thermal stability of membranes was increasing. Ion exchange capacity was 1.0~1.8(meq/g dry mem.) and water content was 0.16~0.26(g $H_2{O}$)/g dry mem.) and fixed ion concentration was 6.4~7.3(meq/g $H_2{O}$) in synthetic membranes. The $Cl^-$ flux showed an increase due to the increase of CPSf content.

  • The suitability of BMPI (2-bromo-N-methyl pyridinium iodide) for solid-phase peptide synthesis was investigated. The coupling rate of BMPI/HOBT procedure. BMPI/HOBT was superior to DCC/HOBT couplings using the solid-phase peptide bond formation proceeded to a greater degree of completion than DCC/HOBT method did. Double couplings with 2 equiv. of Bocamino acids and 1.5 equiv. of BMPI and $NEt_3$ and 2 equiv. of HOBT in DMF/MC (1:1 v/v) gave the best result for the preparation of a model compound. Stepwise solid phase peptide synthesis using BMPI/HOBT procedure was successfully utilized for the preparation of $(D-Ala)^2$-dynorphine A. BMPI/HOBT procedure for the synthesis of $(D-Ala)^2$-dynorphine gave better yield (20%) than DCC/HOBT procedure did.
