  • This study has been carried out to evaluate gaseous nitrocarburizing treatment undertaken for pure iron at $570^{\circ}C$ in an atmosphere containing 50% endothermic gas, generated from natural gas, and 50% ammonia. The results obtained from the experiment are as follows ; 1) The microstructure of gaseous nitrocarburized pure iron consists of the compound layer on the surface and the diffusion zone beneath it. The compound layer progresses uniformly into ferrite with a thickness of $20{\mu}$ obtained after treating for 3 hours. 2) Chemical analysis has shown that the compound layer has a C/N ratio of 0.19 and that the average combined interstitial content of the compound layer is about 30 atomic percent, which is close to the lower limit of the ${\varepsilon}$-carbonitride phase field in Fe-C-N phase diagram. 3) X-ray diffraction analysis has revealed that the compound layer consists mainly of the c.p.h. phase, ${\varepsilon}-Fe_3$(C.N) and a small amount of $Fe_4N$ and traces of ferrite are also present in the compound layer. 4) The microhardness of the compound layer is about 600 V.H.N and shows a relatively sharp fall-off at the compound layer/diffusion zome interface. 5) The average actual degree of ammonia dissociation is calculated to be 27% for a gaseous nitrocarburizing treatment carried out at $570^{\circ}C$.

  • A particle trajectory model to simulate two-phase particle-laden crossjets into two-dimensional horizontal free stream has been developed to study the variations of the jet trajectories and velocity variations of the gaseous and the particulate phases. The following conclusions may be drawn from the predicted results, which are in agreement with experimental observations. The penetration of the two-phase jet in a crossflow is greater than that of the single-phase jet. The penetration of particles into the free stream increases with increasing particle size, solids-gas loading ratio and carrier gas to free stream velocity ratio at the jet exit. When the particle size is large, the solid particles separate from the carrier gas , while the particles are completely suspended in the carrier gas for the case of small size particles. As the particle to carrier gas velocity ratio at the jet exit is less than unity, the particles in the vicinity of the jet exit are accelerated by the carrier gas. As the injection angle is increased, the difference of the particle trajectory from that of the pure gas becomes larger. Therefore, it can be concluded that the velocities and trajectories of the particle-laden jets in a crossflow change depending on the solids-gas loading ratio, particle size, carrier gas to free stream velocity ratio and particle to gas velocity ratio at the jet exit.

  • Film absorption involves simultaneous heat and mass transfer in the gas-liquid system. While the non-absorbable gas does not participate directly In the absorption process. its pretence does affect the overall heat and mass transfer. An experimental study was performed to investigate the heat and mass transfer characteristics of LiBr-H$_2$O solution flow ing over 6-row horizontal tubes with the water vapor absorption in the pretence of non-absorbable gases. The volumetric concentration of non-absorbable gas, air, was varied from 0.17 to 10.0%. The combined effects of the solution flow rate and its concentration on the heat and mass transfer coefficients were also examined. The presence of 2% volumetric concentration of air resulted in a 25% reduction in the Nusselt number and 41% reduction in the Sherwood number Optimum film Reynolds number was found to exist at which the heat and mass transfer reach their maximum value independent of air contents. Reduced Nusselt and Sherwood numbers. defined as the ratio of Nusselt and Sherwood numbers at given non-absorbable gas content to that with pure water vapor, were correlated to account for the reduction in the heat and mass transfer due to non-absorbable gases in a falling film absorption process.

  • The effect of$H_{2}/N_{2}$gas sintering atmosphere on the carbon content and mechanical properties during the metal injection molding process of carbonyl iron-nickel powder was studied. The carbon content of the specimen after debinding in the pure$N_{2}$atmosphere appeared 0.78 wt%. After showing the maximum value of 1.48 wt.% in the debinding atmosphere of 10%$H_{2}/N_{2}$gas mixture, the carbon content of the debinded specimen decreased gradually with increasing the$H_2$content in the$H_{2}/N_{2}$gas mixture. The carbon contents of the sintered specimen were 0.46~0.63wt% in Na gas atmosphere, while they appeared extremely low above 40%$H_{2}/N_{2}$gas atmosphere. The relative sintered density increased abruptly from 88~90% to 93~96% with the addition of Ni, while the density nearly unchanged above 2% Ni addition. The sintered density increased with increasing the fraction of$H_{2} in H_{2}/N_{2}$gas mixture. Tensile strength and hardness increased, and elongation decreased with increasing carbon and Ni content. In spite of high carbon content of 0.63 wt%, the superior elongation value of 10% was shown.

  • Hydrogen is known to be a clean fuel which does not generate a green house gas during the combustion. However, about 8 kg of carbon dioxide is generated during the course of producing 1 kg of hydrogen through reforming, water gas shift reaction and pressure swing adsorption in order to obtain a high purity hydrogen over 99.999% by volume. In this work, carbon dioxide generation is estimated according to four kinds of natural gas compositions supplied by Korea Gas Corporation and regarding natural gas as pure methane. For the simulation of the modeling, PRO/II with PROVISION V10.2 at AVEVA was utilized and Peng-Robinson equation of state with Twu's alpha function was selected.

  • Pressure swing adsorption is a purification process which can get pure hydrogen. The purification process is composed of four process: compression, adsorption, desorption and discharge. In this study the adsorption process was simulated by using the Fluent and validated with experimental results. A gas used in experiment is composed of H2, CO2, CH4, and CO. Adsorption process conducted under 313 kelvin and 3 bar and bituminous-coal-based (BPL) activated carbon was used as the adsorbent. Langmuir model was applied to explain the gas adsorption. And diffusion of all the gases was controlled by micro-pore resistances. The result shows that, the most adsorbed gas was carbon dioxide, followed by methane and carbon monoxide. And carbon monoxide took the least amount of time to reach the maximum adsorption amount. The molar fraction of the off-gas became the same as the molar fraction of the gas supplied from the inlet after adsorption reached the equilibrium.

  • $Zn_{1-x}Co_x$ Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework (ZIF) (x = 0~0.05) were prepared by the co-precipitation of $Zn^{2+}$ and $Co^{2+}$ using 2-methylimidazole, which were converted into pure and Co-doped ZnO nanoparticles by heat treatment at $600^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. Homogeneous Zn/Co ZIFs were achieved at x < 0.05 owing to the strong coordination of the imidazole linker to $Zn^{2+}$ and $Co^{2+}$, facilitating atomic-scale doping of Co into ZnO via annealing. By contrast, heterogeneous Zn/Co ZIFs were formed at $x{\geq}0.05$, resulting in the formation of $Co_3O_4$ second phase. To investigate the potential as high-performance gas sensors, the gas sensing characteristics of pure and Co-doped ZnO nanoparticles were evaluated. The sensor using 3 at% Co-doped ZnO exhibited an unprecedentedly high response and selectivity to trimethylamine, whereas pure ZnO nanoparticles did not. The facile, bimetallic ZIF derived synthesis of doped-metal oxide nanoparticles can be used to design high-performance gas sensors.

  • The permeation characteristics were investigated for pure carbon dioxide and methane through asymmetric cellulose acetate(CA) membrane, composite cellulose acetate membrane and asymmetric cellulose triacetate(CTA) membrane. In particular, the effect of operating pressure on the permeation performance was examined. And the permeation behavior for a mixture of carbon dioxide and methane ($CO_2/CH_4=57.6/42.4$) was also investigated and compared to the characteristics obtained from pure gases. The experiments were run at the range of partial pressure from 25 to 125 psig, and room temperature. The permeation behaviors of the CA composite and CTA membrane were similiar to those of the CA membrane. The permeation rates of pure carbon dioxide for CA, CA composite and CTA membrane were increased slightly with an increase in upstream partial pressure, while in the case of pure methane they were independent of upstream partial pressure. For a binary mixture of carbon dioxide and methane, abnormal permeation behaviors were observed due to the plasticization of carbon dioxide and the competition effect of each gas. The separation factor and permeation rate for CTA membrane were found to be higher than those for CA membrane, but the mechanical strength of CTA membrane was very poor. And the permeation rate for CA composite membrane was higher than that for CA membrane. Consequently, it can be said that the CA composite membrane is a strong candidate for the separation of $CH_4$ and $CO_2$.

  • This study investigated the natural convection and radiation in a rectangular enclosure with ceiling vent experimentally and numerically. A heat source is located on the center of the bottom surface. The analysis was peformed a pure convection and is combination of natural convection and radiation. The shape of the considered two dimensional model is a square whose center of ceiling($30\%$) is opened. The numerical simulations are carried out for the pure natural convection case and the combined heat transfer case by using the SIMPLE algorithm. For the turbulent flow, Reynolds stresses are closed by the standard $k-{\epsilon}$ model and the wall function is used to determine the wall boundary conditions. The experiment was performed on the same geometrical shape as the computations. The radiative heat transfer is analized by the S-N discrete ordinates method. The results of pure natural convection are compared with those of combined heat transfer by the velocity vectors, stream lines, isothermal lines. The results obtained are as follows 1. Comparing the results of pure convection with those of the combined convection-radiation through the shape of stream lines, isothermal lines are similar to each other. 2. The temperature fields obtained by numerical method are compared to those obtained by experimental one, and it is found that they are showed mean relative error $8.5\%$. 3. Visualization bt smoke is similar to computational results.

  • Recently, there has been considerable interest in electromagnetic pulse (EMP) source for no lethal directed energy weaponry applications. The compactness of the Marx generator, coupled with its ability to be powered by battery technology, makes it a viable handled impulse source. The marx generator has 2 stages. Each stage was constructed one charging capacitor, two electrodes and one charging resistor. A inductance structure is used in order to improve the switching performances fo the whole generator. The experiments of rise time in pure gas and mixtures of gases were described. The experimental results show that the rise time characteristics of the marx generator can be controlled through varying insulation gas.
