Teens and College Students' Purchasing Decision Factors of Denim Jeans In the United States

  • This study provides insight into current social media influences and purchasing power of the young generation in that the size of both of these demographic groups will impact the apparel companies and retail market for the predictable future Denim apparel companies are aware of the discretionary spending power of the Y and Z Generations. The characteristics of current teens are so similar to college-age individuals in that they have grown up with digital technology and they prefer to communicate via social networking sites. Retailers have utilized these social media platforms in order to capture the attention of the generations. Traditionally marketing campaigns have differentiated between teens and the college-age population. However, the teens actually have larger spending power and more discretionary income. A survey consisted of 32 questions pertaining to Internet media influences, influence of people, and decision factors on decisionmaking related to purchasing selection. A random sampling of 163 females responded to a set of questionnaires. Teens, like college students desire to make their own decisions when they select and purchase denim jeans. Overall 40% of them wanted to make their own decisions when purchasing their jeans, however, a significant number are influenced by their friend's opinions (34%) and the opinions of family members (15%). However, celebrities (10%) had the least influence on their decisions. Teens, like colleges students make decisions based on the same decision factors: fit (63%), cost (23%), brand (10%) and color (2%). The most important factor in determining preference was "fit".

A Study on Color Coordination of Knitwear Items for Cultural Goods Development - Focused on the Combination of Chromatic and Achromatic Colors - (니트웨어 문화상품개발을 위한 색상배색 연구 - 유채색과 무채색 배색을 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate emotional images, preference, and purchasing intention on the color combination for knitwear cultural goods development. The subjects were 719 university students in Daejeon and Chungnam province, and the measuring instruments were 12 stimuli manipulated by the combination of chromatic and achromatic colors, and self-administrated questionnaires consisted of general color preference, emotional images, preference, and purchasing intention items of the knitwear cultural goods, and subjects' demographics attributions. The data were analyzed by Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, factor analysis, t test, ${\chi}^2$ test, ANOVA and Duncan's multiple range test, using SPSS program. The results were as follows. University students highly preferred black and gray color and deep tone on knitwear items, while they generally preferred blue and black color, and deep and pastel tone. The chromatic color combination was perceived as warm and conspicuous, but unattractive image. The achromatic color combination was perceived as cold and ordinary, but attractive image. Among the combination of chromatic and achromatic colors, gray & blue combination was perceived as more attractive image than red & dark gray combination. Color combination types of chromatic and achromatic color was showed some important differences on emotional image, preference and purchasing intention of knitwear cultural goods. Achromatic color combination was perceived as attractive image, and showed higher preference and purchasing intention than other color combination types.

The differences in Cognition, Purchasing Experience and Attitudes towards Attributes of SPA Brands between Appearance Interest Groups (외모관심에 따른 SPA브랜드 인지, 구매경험 및 속성에 대한 태도 차이 분석)

  • This study explored the degree of cognition, purchasing experience and attitudes towards SPA brand attributes. This study examined the differences in variables and demographic characteristics against appearance interest groups. A questionnaire survey collected data from November $1^{st}$ and $15^{th}$ 2012. The convenience sample was drawn from females between the ages of 20 and 39 who lived in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions of South Korea. A total of 255 responses were complete and usable questionnaires. Data were tested through factor analysis, t-test, and ${\chi}^2$ test using SPSS 21.0. The results show that there were significant group differences in the cognition and purchasing experience of SPA brands and the attitudes towards SPA brand attributes. The high appearance interest group was more aware of SPA brands and evaluated SPA brand attributes more positively and bought more SPA brand products than the low appearance interest group. The high appearance interest group showed that domestic brands were excellent in low price among brand attributes but foreign brands were relatively excellent in various design and store display. There was a significant difference in educational level between appearance interest groups; however, there were no significant differences in age, marital status, and income level group. This study contributes to basic information for the SPA brand buying behavior research field and apparel industry marketing strategy by analyzing the relationship among appearance interest, cognition, SPA brand purchasing experience and SPA brand attribute attitudes.

A Study on Dimension of the Characteristics of New Young Generation and Information Search for Buying Inner Wear (신세대특성(新世代特性)과 속옷 구매시(購買時) 정보탐색(情報探索)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the variables which could characteristics the New Young Generation (NYG), to investigate the relationship between level of NYG characteristics and information searching related to underwear purchasing, and the differences level of the NYG characteristics according to demographic variables (sex, grade, major), and examine the casual relationships of demographic variables (sex, place of growing background, parent's education) and level of the NYG characteristics on information searching related to underwear purchasing. The subjects were 723 college students (female = 324, male=398) living in Seoul and Kyuggi were participated in this study. The NYG is limited to person who born after 1970's. The result of this study were as follows; 1. Five factors of New Young Generation oriented characteristics were identified; F.1 'Info-telecommunication(Info-Telecom)'; F.2 'Family and Marriage'; F.3 'Consumption pattern'; FA 'Self-centered (Individualism)'; F.5 Work/Career oriented. 2. The relationship between the NYG characteristics and information search in underwear purchasing were significanted. 3. In demographic variables, gender, grade, and major were partially significant differences. 4. In male students, the result of the casual relationship between demographic variables with NYG characteristics and the level of the NYG in underwear purchasing showed that grade, background of grownplace, level of parent's education were significanted the high level of info-telecom factor associated with higher grade, city-grown, higher level of parent's education. In conclusion, the result showed that the level of NYG characteristics was significant to male students and specially for grade older students. The background of parent's education level was the another important variables to predicting the NYG characteristics. Finally the higher the NYG characteristics, the more information search in underwear purchasing.

The Purchasing Behavior and Use of Cosmetics Associated with Self-Monitoring and Demographic Variables (자기모니터링, 인구통계학적 변인과 화장품 구매행동 및 사용에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the casual relationships of self-monitoring, face satisfaction, and demographic variables on the purchasing behavior and use of cosmetics of women. Samples wre 479 women in their 20's to 50's in Seoul, Korea. Three factors of the purchase criteria of cosmetics derived by factor analysis : F.1 'intrinsic trait', F.2 'sales promotion and fashion', F.3 'economy. Women high in self-monitor purchased and used cosmetics more than those low in self-monitor. There were significant relationships between the purchasing behavior and use of cosmetics and age, education, and social stratification. Women in their 20's and 30's perceived purchase criteria associated with intrinsic trait such as color and becomingness as more important, 20's sales promotion and fashion, women with less education perceived economy more than did the others. Upper class women showed more concern for intrinsic trait such as quality and color of cosmetics than did lower class. Social stratification, age, self-monitoring, and education had a direct effect on the degree of cosmetics purchase. Self-monitoring and education had a direct effect on the degree of cosmetics use. Age, education, social stratification, and face satisfaction had an indirect effect on the degree of cosmetics purchase and use. The causal relationship of self-monitoring on the use of coloring cosmetics was stronger than the connection between self-monitoring and total cosmetics. The present findings provide that personal trait associated with self-monitoring of women is important variable in understanding of the purchasing behavior and use of cosmetics.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of VMD consciousness on importance of VMD components and clothing purchasing behaviors of university students. The research method was survey and subjects were 545 male and female university students in Chungnam province. The questionnaire consisted of 4 measuring instruments; VMD consciousness, importance of VMD components, clothing purchasing behaviors, and demographic attribution. The data were analyzed by factor analysis, $X^2$ test, t-test, cluster analysis, ANOVA and Duncan's multiple range test, using SPSS program. The results were as follows. First, university students had high VMD consciousness and attended to fashion trend, brand image, product information, and enjoyment of shopping, and felt appetite to purchase. Second, university students considered store arrangement and show window display as the important VMD components to purchase clothing. Third, university students were categorized into 3 consumer types(shopping/brand pursuit type, utilitarian information pursuit type, and trend/information pursuit type) by VMD consciousness. Forth, the consumer types by VMD consciousness showed many differences in importance of VMD components and clothing purchasing behaviors. Shopping/brand type considered show window display, cleanness and lighting/music/properties/color as more important VMD components, and used more money to purchase clothing and shopped more often than other consumer types.

A Study on Brand Preference, Clothing Pursuit Benefits and Purchasing Behavior of Chinese Women (중국 여성의 브랜드 선호도, 의복추구혜택과 구매행동에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the brand preference, the clothing pursuit benefits, and the purchasing behavior of Chinese women. A survey questionnaire was distributed to Chinese women in their 20s and 30s. The surveys period was from 9th January 9th to $21^{st}$ February 2016. The respondents were 343 Chinese women living in Henan. The collected data was analyzed by frequency analysis, factor analysis, t-test, one-way analysis of variance, and Duncan's multiple range of verification. The key results of this study are herein summarized. The brands examined, listed in order of preference, are Ochirly, Only, Zara, Uniqlo, La Chapelle, H&M, Peace bird, Vero Moda, JNBY, and The Basic House. The five most preferred brands were then selected and further analyzed. For purchasing, the design and price were considered to be important, while for product evaluation, importance was given to the style, price, quality, and color. Factors important in the clothing pursuit benefits were found to be price pursuit, trend pursuit, brand pursuit, individual pursuit, comfort pursuit, and quality pursuit. Also, clothing pursuit benefits depends on the average monthly income, monthly clothing purchasing cost, and the education level of the individual. Lastly, we observed that the sources and store selection made noticeable difference in clothing pursuit benefits.

  • This study investigated the effect of shopping orientation of college students majoring in beauty on satisfaction in beauty contents and purchasing behavior. For the study, a survey was made and with the use of Spss 21.0, a frequency analysis, an exploring factor test, a reliability test, a correlation analysis, and a linear regression analysis were conducted. The results of the investigation are presented: First, trend-pursuing, convenience-pursuing and pleasure-pursuing orientation had significant effects on satisfaction in beauty contents. Second, in respect to the effects shopping orientation had on purchasing behavior, pleasure-pursuing, trend-pursuing, brand-pursuing, convenience-pursuing and price-pursuing orientation had a positive effect on purchase behavior. Third, as for the effect of satisfaction in beauty contents on purchasing behaviors, the more satisfaction in beauty contents, the more purchase behaviors were found. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the cause and effects between purchase orientation, contents satisfaction and purchasing behaviors in beauty students and provide basic data for marketing strategies.

  • Purpose - The purpose of this study to explore factors consumers prioritize when purchasing seafood online. The originality of the study lies on adopting AHP-based approach in analyzing prioritized purchasing factors of seafood online. Design/methodology/approach - A survey was conducted targeting Korean consumers who have purchased seafood online. AHP method was applied to rank factors consumers prioritize before making decision. Findings - First, product's factor ranked first among other high level factors including delivery service, seller, online platform. Second, sanitation, taste, country of origin ranked first, second, third respectively, within product's factors. Third, safe delivery, timeliness, information accuracy ranked first, second, third respectively, within delivery factors. Fourth, consumer reviews, consumer response ability, promotion ranked first, second, third within seller factors. Fifth, Personal information management system, credibility, user-friendliness ranked first, second, third, within online platform factors. Research implications or Originality - To activate seafood online market, it is crucial to assure consumers that the seafood is well managed in a sanitary way from the production site to table. Existing government programs such as seafood traceability system, HACCP, and cold-chain infrastructure needs improvement. Due to highly perishable characteristic of seafood, delivery factors matter when purchasing online. Online platforms needs to continue to improve delivery service. Seafood products are mostly not branded and without objective information about their properties. Creating quality classification and seafood brands are likely to help consumers chose seafood online.

Color Sensibility and Preference of the Black Color Fabrics (블랙컬러 패션소재의 색채감성과 선호도)

  • The purposes of this research were to evaluate the color sensibility and preferences, and to analyze the effect of the tactile preferences and purchasing preference on structural properties, color characteristics and color sensibility for the black color fabrics. Male and female university students were asked to evaluate the color sensibility, tactile preference and purchasing preference to the nine different black fabrics which were selected on the basis of the previous research results. Data were analyzed by using frequency analysis, mean, factor analysis, t-test, Kruskal-Wallis test, correlation and regression analysis. The color sensibility for black color fabrics was classified into four factors: simplicity/classic, elegance, modernity and dignity. This color sensibility factors showed a significant correlative relationship to the structural properties and color characteristics of black color fabrics. On the other hand, fabrics which were evaluated with good tactile preference among the black color fabrics tended to show higher purchasing preference. Also, among the color sensibility, the structural properties and color characteristics of black color fabrics, major variable factor of influencing on the tactile preference and the purchasing preference was turned out to be the color sensibility.
