In oder to analyze the effect of operating conditions on pulverized coal combustion, a numerical study is conducted at the pulverized coal combustor. Eulerian approach is used for the gas phase, whereas Lagrangian approach is used for the particle phase. Turbulence is modeled using standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model. The description of species transport and combustion chemistry is based on the mixture fraction/probability density function(PDF) approach. Radiation is modeled using P-l model. The turbulent dispersion of particles is modeled using discrete random walk model. Swirl number of secondary air affects the flame front, particle residence time and carbon conversion. Primary/Secondary air mass ratio also affects the flame front but little affects the carbon conversion and particle residence time. Air-fuel ratio only affects the flame front due to lack of oxygen. Radiation strongly affects the flame front and gas temperature distribution because pulverized coal flame of high temperature is considered.
Numerical investigations on air staging and fuel staging were carried out with a newly designed coaxial cyclone combustor, which uses the method of two stage coal combustion composed of pre-combustor and main combustor. The pre-combustor with a high air/fuel ratio is designed to supply gas at high temperature to the main combustor. To avoid local high temperature region in this process, secondary air is injected in the downstream. Together with the burned gas supplied from the pre-combustor and the preheated air directly injected into main combustor, coals supplied through the main burner react rapidly at a low air/fuel ratio. Strong swirling motion of cyclone combustor keeps the wall temperature high, which makes slagging combustion possible. Alaska, US coal is used for calculations. Predictions were made for various coal flow rates in the main combustor for fuel staging and for the various flow rate of secondary air in the pre-combustor for air staging. In-scattering angles are also chosen as a variable to increase residence times of coal particles. Temperature fields and particle trajectories for various conditions are described. Predicted temperature variations at the wall of the combustor are compared with corresponding experimental data and show a similar trend. The in-scattering angle of 20° is recommended to increase the combustion efficiency in the main chamber.

Pulverized coal (PC) has become an important auxiliary fuel in the iron and steel industry since the technique of pulverized coal injection (PCI) was developed for iron making. The combustion efficiencies of pulverized coal in blowpipes and tuyeres under various operational conditions are numerically predicted to determine the performance levels with regard to different locations of the nozzles in a blast furnace. A variety of parameters, including the pulverized coal quantities, oxygen amounts, inlet temperatures of the tuyeres, and the mass flow rate of coal carrier gas are taken into consideration. Also, in order to develop greater efficiency than those of existing coal injection systems, this study applies a flame measurement system using a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera and a frame grabber. It uses auto sampling algorithms from the flame shape information to determine the device for the optimal location control for PCI. This study finds further improvements of the blast furnace performance via the control of the PCI locations.
Petroleum coke has high heating value and low price. Due to the steadily increasing demand for heavy oil processing, the production volume of petroleum coke tends to be expanded. The high availability and low price of petroleum coke have been strongly considered as candidate fuel for power generation facilities. However the high carbon content, high sulfur content and nitrogen content of petroleum fuel are known to produce relatively large quantity of CO2, high NOx and SO2 emission. In this work, a series of numerical simulations have been carried out in order to investigate the effects of swirl flow intensity on combustion furnace, which is most important operating condition. Results show that the temperature distribution was spatially uniform at about 1600K but high temperature region are located quite differently depending on swirl number. In addition, numerical temperature data was compared with experimental temperature data and its temperature difference shows less than 10%. On the other hand, discrepancy between numerical and experimental emission data were slightly large with necessities of improved emission model.

The aims of this research were to evaluate effects of biomass co-firing to pulverized coal power plants and the variation of co-firing ratios on the plant efficiency related to power consumption of auxiliary system and flue gas characteristics such as production and component by process simulation based on the existing pulverized coal power plant. In this study, four kinds of biomass are selected as renewable fuel candidates for co-firing: wood pellet(WP), palm kernel shell(PKS), empty fruit bunch(EFB) and walnut shell(WS). Process simulation for various biomass fuels and co-firing ratios was performed using a commercial software. Gas side including combustion system and flue gas treatment system was considering with combination of water and steam side which contains turbines, condenser, feed water heaters and pumps. As a result, walnut shell might be the most suitable as co-firing fuel among four biomass since when 10% of walnut shell was co-fired with 90% of coal on thermal basis, flue gas production and power consumption of auxiliary systems were the smallest than those of other biomass co-firing while net plant efficiency was relatively higher than those of other biomass co-firing. However, with increasing walnut shell co-firing ratios, boiler efficiency and net plant efficiency were expected to decrease rather than coal combustion without biomass co-firing.
This study focused on the effect of the biomass blended ratio on air-staged pulverized coal furnace. The hybrid NOx reduction technology between fuel blending and air staging has been applied in an air-staged pulverized coal fired furnace. The results indicated that co-firing biomass with coal could reduce NOx emissions in an air-staged combustion. In addition, carbon burnout and flame temperature increased under the air-staged condition. A dominant synergistic effect on NOx reduction and carbon burnout was observed when biomass co-firing with coal was applied in air staged combustion.
Extra heavy vacuum residue oil has advantage as the fuel of a power plant in reducing the cost of power generation. Numerical study is conducted by the KIVA code to understand combustion, heat transfer and flow field characteristics in the test reactor. The combustion model of pulverized coal particles is adopted as the combustion process of extra heavy oil is similar to that of coal. As an initial phase of investigation parametric study is performed with respect to SMD and spray angle of injected spray droplets.
The oxidation behavior of the simulated spent fuel of burn up 33 MWD/kgU was investigated to predict that of the spent fuel in the temperature ranges of 400 to $700^{\circ}C$ and was compared with those of $UO_2$. The forms of uranium oxides after the oxidation were conformed by XRD analyses. The oxidation rate at each the temperature and the activation energy were obtained. After complete oxidation, the simulated spent fuel was converted to $U_3O_8$ and pulverized to powder due to the density difference between the simulated spent fuel and uranium oxides. The activation energies were 85.35 and 30.77kJ/mol in the temperature ranges of 400$\leq$T($^{\circ}C$)$\leq$500 and 500$\leq$T($^{\circ}C$)$\leq$700, respectively.

This study investigates the combustion and heat transfer characteristics of a 100MWe pulverized coal boiler retrofitted for demonstration of oxy-coal combustion. By computational fluid dynamics (CFD), the flame temperature and wall heat flux were compared for air-fuel and oxy-fuel combustion with different $O_2$ concentration in the oxidizers. It was found that the oxy-fuel combustion requires an $O_2$ concentration higher than 27 vol.% for the boiler to achieve the similar value of wall heat flux with air-fuel combustion.
The emission of $NO_{x}$ during coal combustion is a major reason of environment impact. $NO_{x}$ is an acid rain precursor and participates in the generation of smog through ozone production. $NO_{x}$ can be divided into thermal $NO_{x}$, fuel $NO_{x}$ and prompt $NO_{x}$. Thermal $NO_{x}$ is formed in a highly temperature condition dependent. Fuel $NO_{x}$ is dependent on the local combustion characteristics and initial concentration of nitrogen bound compound, while prompt $NO_{x}$ is formed in a significant quantity in some combustion environments, such as low temperature and short residence times. This paper presents numerical simulation of the flow and combustion characteristics in the furnace of a tangential firing boiler of 500MW with burners installed at the every comer of the furnace. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the reduction of $NO_{x}$ emission in a 500MW pulverized coal tangential firing boiler with different OFA's and burner angles. Calculations with different air flow rates of over fired air(OFA) and burner angles are performed.
