  • This paper proposes the practical echo-signal synthesis models - UTAHID (Underwater TArget by Highlight Distribution) & M-UTAHID(Modified UTAHID) - of underwater target for active sonar engineering At high frequencies all the echo components that are the specular reflected waves and various elastic scattering wave scan be regarded the summation of individual echo from some equivalent scattering centers, so the underwater target is characterized by highlights distributed in spatial target structure. Proposed models are compared with characteristics of random distributed model & equivalent interval highlight model, and analyzed target strength, echo-elongation effect, target time spread loss and so on. Thus these can be efficiently used in various real systems related to underwater target echo-signal synthesis on active sonar and acoustic countermeasure.

  • In this paper, when we use the chirp signal as input signal of ultrasonic signal system the technique for determining the bandwidth of the chirp signal that maximizes the amplitude of the compressed ultrasonic echo signal has been studied. In ultrasonic signal processing systems, the signal-to-noise ratio of the echo signal can be too low due to damping and scattering of the ultrasonic wave during transmission. Method of pulse compression using chirp signal is a means to increase the signal-to-noise ratio in ultrasonic pulse-echo systems. Simulation and experimental results showed that the output signal of ultrasonic system was increased by pulse width of chirp signal and the optimum-bandwidth of the chirp signal was 1.15 times larger than the bandwidth of the ultrasonic system.

  • this thesis proposes a new echo canceller that can be used in a fulll-duplex digital subscriber loopmodem. The modem suffers from nonlinear distortion such as transmitted pulse asymmetry, saturation in transformers, and nonlinearity of data converters. The proposed nonlinear echo canceller can compensate the nolinear distortion by using a nonlinear digital filter based on canonical pieceewise-linear (CPWL) function. Numerical results based on computer simulation are given in this paper. It is shown that the convergence characteristics depend on the initial values of weights of linear filters with absoluters and that the nonlinearity in digital-to-analog(D/A) converter can be compensated by a relatively small number linear filters with absoluters. It is also shown that the proposed algorithm has a faster convergence rate in comparison with Voterra algorithm.

  • Ultrasonic testing has a characteristics such as excellent permeability, high-sensitivity to find defect and an almost exact measurement for position. size and direction of inner defect, which differ from other non-destructive testing. In the study, we developed program into optimal testing condition, to distinguish obstacle echo and defect position. This program shows generation and processing of ultrasonic pulse. We compared simulation with ultrasonic test in 45$^\circ$, 60$^\circ$and 70$^\circ$transducer. Test results were in accordance with simulation within 0.1~7.2%.

  • This paper proposes an efficient array beamforming method using spatial matched filtering for ultrasound imaging. In the proposed method, ultrasound waves are transmitted from an array subaperture with fixed transmit focus as in conventional array imaging. At receive, radio frequency (RF) echo signals from each receive channel are passed through a spatial matched filter that is constructed based on the system transmit-receive spatial impulse response. The filtered echo signals are then summed. The filter remaps and spatially registers the acoustic energy from each element so that the pulse-echo impulse response of the summed output is focused with acceptably low side lobes. Analytical beam pattern analysis and simulation results using a linear array show that the proposed spatial filtering method can provide more improved spatial resolution and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) compared with conventional dynamic receive focusing (DRF) method by implementing two-way dynamically focused beam pattern throughout the field.

  • Simulation of the target-scattered echo requires the understanding of scattering mechanism at the highlight points. In this paper, the basic assumption of Highlight Model is reviewed through the analyzed data obtained in the acoustic water tank experiment. The analysis shows that the scattering mechanism involves pulse elongation and frequency shift as elements of target-scattered echo, and that the internal structures affect the temporal response of the target-scattered echo significantly. The band-limited impulse response or Green's function due to the diffraction from highlight points of internal structures is not mere delta function, but acts like a filter, which causes frequency shift and is elongated in time.

  • Most of conventional ultrasonic transducers are constructed to generate either longitudinal or shear waves, but not both of them. We investigated the mechanism of dual mode transducers that generates both of the longitudinal and shear waves simultaneously with a single PZT element. A piezoelectric ceramic PZT has the hexagonal 6mm crystal symmetry, after poling. We studied the performance of a PZT element as a function of its rotation angle so that its efficiency is optimized to excite the two waves equally strongly. The results are verified by checking the impedance variation of the element with Finite Element Methods, and checking the wave form by pulse-echo test simulation. Validity of the theoretical calculation is verified through experiments.

  • Purpose: Projection-type Fast Spin Echo (PFSE) imaging is robust to patient motion or flow related artifact compared to conventional Fast Spin Echo (FSE) imaging, however, it has difficulty in controlling $T_2$ contrast. In this paper, Tz contrast in the PFSE method is analyzed and compared with those of the FSE method with various effective echo times by computer simulation. The contrasts in the FSE and PFSE methods are also compared by experiments with volunteers. From the analysis and simulation, it is shown that ${T_2}-weighted$ images can well be obtained by the PFSE method proposed. Materials and methods: Pulse sequence for the PFSE method is implemented at a 1.0 Tesla whole body MRI system and $T_2$ contrasts in the PFSE and FSE methods are analyzed by computer simulation and experiment with volunteers. For the simulation, a mathematical phantom composed of various $T_2$ values is devised and $T_2$ contrast in the reconstructed image by the PFSE is compared to those by the FSE method with various effective echo times. Multi-slice ${T_2}-weighted$ head images of the volunteers obtained by the PFSE method are also shown in comparison with those by the FSE method at a 1.0 Tesla whole body MRI system. Results: From the analysis, $T_2$ contrast by the PFSE method appears similar to those by the FSE method with the effective echo time in a range of SO-lOOms. Using a mathematical phantom, contrast in the PFSE image appears close to that by the FSE method with the effective echo time of 96ms. From experiment with volunteers, multi-slice $T_2-weighted$ images are obtained by the PFSE method having contrast similar to that of the FSE method with the effective echo time of 96ms. Reconstructed images by the PFSE method show less motion related artifact compared to those by the FSE method. Conclusion: The projection-type FSE imaging acquires multiple radial lines with different angles in polar coordinate in k space using multiple spin echoes. The PFSE method is robust to patient motion or flow, however, it has difficulty in controlling $T_2$ contrast compared to the FSE method. In this paper, it is shown that the PFSE method provides good $T_2$ contrast (${T_2}-weighted$ images) similar to the FSE method by both computer simulation and experiments with volunteers.
