  • The microwave heating system of KSTAR consists of ECH and LHCD. ECH and LHCD offer the benefits ofa reliable operation at the start of plasma formation and a non-inductive current drive durable steady state operation, respectively. LHCD uses a C-band microwave system with a frequency of 5 GHz. A pulsed power modulator with a power of 3.6 MW, $4{\mu}S$, 200 pps is required to drive the high-powered magnetron. The development of a pulse modulator with 1:4 pulse transformers is the focus of the research in this study. The peak power handling capability is 3.6 MW (45 kV, 90 A at load side with a pulse width of $4{\mu}S$). This paper describes the system overview and test results of the pulsed modulator. In particular, a simulated waveform is compared with the tested waveform.

  • This paper presents a pulse-width adjustment (PWA) strategy for a novel bidirectional DC-DC boost converter to improve the performance of the dynamic inductor current response. This novel converter consists of three main components: a full-bridge converter (FBC), a high-frequency isolated transformer with large leakage inductance, and a three-level voltage-doubler rectifier (VDR). A number of scholars have analyzed the principles, such as the soft-switching performance and high-efficiency characteristic, of this converter based on pulse-width modulation plus phase-shift (PPS) control. It turns out that this converter is suitable for energy storage applications and exhibits good performance. However, the dynamic inductor current response processes of control variable adjustment is not analyzed in this converter. In fact, dc component may occur in the inductor current during its dynamic response process, which can influence the stability and reliability of the converter system. The dynamic responses under different operating modes of a conventional feedforward control are discussed in this paper. And a PWA strategy is proposed to enhance the dynamic inductor current response performance of the converter. This paper gives a detailed design and implementation of the PWA strategy. The proposed strategy is verified through a series of simulation and experimental results.

  • In this paper, we developed the on-line Data Aquisition System(DAS) of distribution transformers using the hardware and monitoring program. The DAS consists of the top oil temperature sensing part, ambient temperature sensing part, load current sensing part, acoustic emission peak-value sensing part, acoustic emission pulse counter part, micro-processor part and wireless communication part. The Monitoring System consists of the communication setting, online monitoring and database construction part. The DAS send the data acquired from the some sensors of the distribution transformers to the host PC. The monitoring program of the host PC stores the data to database. And the monitoring system estimates the loss of life time for distribution transformer from the DB. Thus, it could be managed the career and the functional lifetime of the transformer more efficiently than existing methodologies.

  • This paper presents a useful multilevel PWM inverter scheme based on a (3$^{n-1}$+2) level generation technique. It consists of a PWM inverter, an assembly of LEVEL inverters, and cascaded transformers. To produce high quality output voltage waves, it synthesizes a large number of output voltage levels using cascaded transformers, which have a series-connected secondary. By a suitable selection of secondary turn-ration of the transformer, the amplitude of an output voltage is appeared at the rate of an integer to an input dc source. Operational principles and analysis are illustrated in depth. The validity of the proposed system is verified through computer-aided simulations and experimental results using prototypes generation output voltages of an 11-level and a 29-level, respectively. And their results are compared with conventional counterparts.

  • This paper aims to develop an SMPS topology for handling a high range of input voltages based on a DC-DC flyback converter circuit. For this purpose, 2 capacitors of the same specifications were serially connected on the input terminal side, with a flyback converter of the same circuit configuration serially connected to each of them, so as to achieve high input voltage and an effect of dividing input voltage. The serially connected flyback converters have the transformer turn ratio of 1:1, so that each coil is used for the winding of a single transformer, which is a characteristic of doubly-fed configuration and enables the correction of input capacitor voltage imbalance. In addition, a pulse transformer was designed and fabricated in a way that can achieve the isolation and noise robustness of the PWM output signal of the PWM controller that applies gate voltage to individual flyback converter switches. PSIM simulation was carried out to verify such a structure and confirm its feasibility, and a 100W class stack was fabricated and used to verify the feasibility of the proposed high voltage SMPS topology.

  • This paper presents a tapered slot-antenna(TSA) for optimal impulse-signal transmission in ultra-wide band(UWB). The proposed TSA provides radiates in end-fire direction, which meets an impulse-radio UWB(IR-UWB) system demands(e.g., low loss, thus less error throughout the UWB band). In order to minimize the pulse distortion, we used an wideband impedance transformer and a microstrip slotline. The pulse fidelity characteristics was evaluated with finite-difference time-domain(FDTD) analysis technique and pulse fidelity correlation equation. Approximately 93.89 % pulse fidelity was obtained between the two antennas in 0.5 m range. Additionally, derived chirp Z-transform algorithm enables us to utilize the zoom-in option on the pulse signal in few nano-seconds below. Thus, it is possible to analyze the pulse signal distortion, delay or dispersion characteristics.

  • This paper proposes an inverter for the grid-connected photovoltaic system based on the transformer-less inverter. This system consists of a high frequency inverter bridge, high frequency transformer, diode bridge rectifiers, a DC filter, a low frequency inverter bridge, and an AD filter. The high frequency inverter bridge switching at 20kHz is used to generate bipolar PWM pulse, which is subsequently rectified by diode bridge rectifiers to result in a full-wave rectified sine wave. Finally, it is unfolded by a low frequency inverter bridge to result in a 60Hz sine wave power output. In this paper, the control algorithm for synchronous current feedback control method and a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) method using DSP are described. And, the simulation and experimental results are shown to verify the validity of the proposed system.

  • The method for the current equalization of the rectifier diodes in LLC resonant converter is proposed. The method decreases the current difference between the rectifier diodes using the auxiliary winding of the transformer and asymmetrical pulse width modulation (APWM). The analytical reason of the current unbalance is investigated and the operation principle of the proposed method and APWM control loop are explained. The performance of the proposed method was verified on a 480-W, 400-V/24-V dc/dc converter.

  • This paper analyzes a symmetric active cell balancer for a battery management system. The considered cell balancer uses a forward converter in which the circuit structure is symmetric. This cell-balancing method uses fewer switches and is simpler than the previously proposed active cell-balancing circuits. Active power switches of this cell-balancing circuit operate simultaneously with the same pulse width modulation signals. Therefore, this cell-balancing circuit requires less time to be balanced than a previous bidirectional-forward-converter-based cell balancer. This paper analyzes the operational principles and modes of this cell balancer with computer-based circuit simulation results as well as experimental results in which each unbalanced cell is equalized with this cell balancer. The maximum power transfer efficiency of the investigated cell balancer was 87.5% from the experimental results. In addition to the experimental and analytical results, this paper presents the performance of this symmetric active cell-balancing method.
