  • We describe the possibility of field application and the diagnosis method of winding deformation in the power transformers using L.V.I. test system. Any winding deformation will result in a change of capacitance between winding parts and passibly some change in the winding inductance. These changes will then result in a change in the responce to the applied pulse in both the magnitude and period of the resulting oscillations. And we discuss with respect to test result of model transformer and commercial transformer, appear good results with application possibility in field.

  • We propose pulsed $CO_2$ laser below 30W by the AC(60Hz) switching control of leakage transformer primary which has some advantage of cost and size compared to a typical pulsed power supply. Pulse repetition rate is adjusted from 5Hz to 60Hz to control laser output. In this laser, a low voltage open loop control for high voltage discharge circuit is employed to avoid the HV sampling or switching and high voltage leakage transformer is used to convert rectified low voltage pulse to high voltage one. A ZCS(Zero Cross Switch) circuit and a PIC one-chip microprocessor are used to control gate signal of SCR precisely. The pulse repetition rate is limited by 60Hz due to the frequency of AC line and a high leakage inductance. The maximum laser output was obtained about 23W at pulse repetition rate of 60Hz, total gas mixture of $CO_{2}/N_{2}$/He = 1/9/15, SCR gate trigger angle 90$^{\circ}$, and total pressure of 18Torr.

  • Microwave heating system of KSTAR consists of ECH and LHCD. ECH and LHCD offer the reliability of operation in the beginning of plasma formation and non-inductive current drive for long time steady state operation with maintaining MHD stability, respectively. LHCD demands 5 GHz of frequency and consists of c-band waveguide, 4-port circuitor, dry dummy load, dual directional coupler, E-bend, arc detector. Our system is a lineup type pulse modulator that has 45 kV of output pulse voltage, 90 A of pulse current, 4 us of pulse width. 1:4 step-up pulse transformer, 7 stages of PFN and thyratron tube (E2V, CX1191D) are used in this modulator. The purpose of this paper is to show the modulator design and experimental result.

  • This paper describes the design and implementation of a trigger circuit which can be series connected with main pulse circuit for a xenon flash lamp driver. For generating high voltage, the trigger circuit is designed as an inductive energy storage pulsed power modulator with 2 state step-up circuit consisting of a boost converter and a flyback circuit. In order to guarantee pulse width, a resonant capacitor on the output side of the flyback circuit is designed. This capacitor limits the output voltage to protect the flyback switch. In addition, to protect another power supply of xenon flash lamp driver from trigger pulse, the high voltage transformer which can carry the full current of main pulse is designed. To verify the proposed design, the trigger circuit is developed with the specification of maximum 23 kV, 0.6 J/pulse output and tested with a xenon flash lamp driver consisting of a main pulse circuit and a simmer circuit.

  • Power Transformers with more than one secondary winding are not uncommon in industrial applications. But new classes of applications where very large number of independent secondaries are used are becoming popular in controlled converters for medium and high voltage applications. Cascade H-bridge medium voltage drives and Pulse Step Modulation (PSM) based high voltage power supplies are such applications. Regulated high voltage power supplies (Fig. 1) with 35-100 kV, 5-10 MW output range with very fast dynamics (${\mu}S$ order) uses such transformers. Such power supplies are widely used in fusion research. Here series connection of isolated voltage sources with conventional switching semiconductor devices is achieved by large number of separate transformers or by single unit of multi-secondary transformer. Naturally, a transformer having numbers of secondary windings (~40) on single core is the preferred solution due to space and cost considerations. For design and simulation analysis of such a power supply, the model of a multi-secondary transformer poses special problem to any circuit analysis software as many simulation softwares provide transformer models with limited number (3-6) of secondary windings. Multi-Secondary transformer models with 3 different schemes are available. A comparison of test results from a practical Multi-secondary transformer with a simulation model using magnetic component is found to describe the behavior closer to observed test results. Earlier models assumed magnetising inductance in a linear loss less core model although in actual it is saturable core made-up of CRGO steel laminations. This article discusses a more detailed representation of flux coupled magnetic model with saturable core properties to simulate actual transformers very close to its observed parameters in test and actual usage.

  • A single active capacitor snubber-assisted soft-switching sinewave pulse modulation utility-interactive power conditioner with a three-winding flyback high frequency transformer link and a bidirectional active power switch in its secondary side has been proposed. With the aid of the switched-capacitor quasi-resonant snubber cell, the high frequency switching devices in the primary side of the proposed DC-to-AC sinewave power inverter can be turned-off with ZVS commutation. In addition to this, the proposed power conditioner in the DCM can effectively take the advantages of ZCS turn-on commutation. Its output port is connected directly to the utility AC power source grid. At the end, the prototype of the proposed HF-UPC is built and tested in experiment. Its power conversion conditioning and processing circuit with a high frequency flyback transformer link is verified and the output sinewave current is qualified in accordance with the power quality guidelines of the utility AC interactive power systems.

  • The assessment of the condition of a transformer winding which is suspected of having suffered short circuit damage can be difficult. Conventional test such as winding resistance, magnetic current or insulation resistance will only detect damage if a permanent electrical fault exists. Visual inspection of windings necessitates the removal of oil and in many cases only a very small proportion of the winding can be seen. We describe the characteristic of LVI test system and methods to detect the deformation of windings in the power transformers. As the front rise time of recurrent-surge generator pulse less than 1000 ㎱ and the peak value of pulse is about 500 V, we have the good results of detecting winding deformation in the LVI test of transformers.

  • This paper describes that the distribution of electromagnetic field occurred by PD(Partial Discharge) pulse was calculated with simulation program and characteristics of calibration and PD pulses measured with folded dipole types sensors were analyzed. As the distribution of electromagnetic field in simulation was very random the wide band measuring methods were good. Therefore three folded dipole antenna types sensors which had different their widths were designed and made. The signal according to direction and distance between sensor and pulse source in these sensor was measured and the spectrum of surface PD were acquired in the experiment of model transformer. In this result the characteristics of sensor which had middle width was better than others and the main spectrum of PD signals in surface discharge were existed in around 220MHz, 320MHz and from 450MHz to 750MHz.

  • In order to provide a source for nine phases suitable for 18-pulse ac to dc power, this paper proposes a new structure for a step-up asymmetrical delta-connected transformer for converting three-phase ac power to nine-phase ac power. The design allows for symmetry between the nine output voltages to improve the power quality of the supply current and to minimize the THD. The results show that this new structure proves the equality between the output voltages with $40^{\circ}-{\alpha}$ and $40^{\circ}+{\alpha}$ phase shifting and produces symmetrical output currents. This result in the elimination of harmonics in the network current and provides a simulated THD that is equal to 5.12 %. An experimental prototype of the step-up asymmetrical delta-autotransformer is developed in the laboratory and the obtained results give a network current with a THD that is equal to 5.35%. Furthermore, a finite element analysis with a 3D magnetic field model is made based on the dimensions of the 4kVA, 400 V laboratory prototype three-phase with three-limb delta-autotransformer with a six-stacked-core in each limb. The magnetic distribution flux, field intensity and magnetic energy are carried out under open-circuit operation or load-loss.
