This article reports for the first time on the lateral growth of PEO (plasma electrolytic oxidation) films on Al1050 alloy by the application of anodic pulse current in an alkaline electrolyte. Generation of microarcs was observed at the edges initially and then moved towards the central region with PEO treatment time. Disc type PEO film islands with about $20{\mu}m$ diameter were formed first and they grew laterally by the formation of new disc type PEO films at the edge of pre-formed PEO islands. The PEO film islands were found to be interconnected completely and form a continuous PEO film when generation of small size microarcs are terminated at the central part of the specimen, resulting in very smooth surface with low surface roughness less than $1{\mu}m$ of $R_a$. Further PEO treatment after the complete interconnection of PEO films islands showed local thickening of PEO films by vertical growth. It is concluded that very smooth PEO film surface can be obtained by lateral growth mechanism rather than vertical growth of them.
The relationships between driving voltage and the wall charge distribution in the address period of surface discharge type AC Plasma Display Panel have been investigated. The quantity of wall charge on each electrode are detected simultaneously from the electrode current after applying only one addressing discharge pulse. The wall charge Qy on the scan electrode Y is nearly the sum of Qx on the address electrode X and Qz on the sustain electrode 2. The Qy increased with the driving voltage regardless of the kind of electrode, whereas the address time Td decreased, Qz and Qy are increased considerably with the blocking voltage Vz, whereas Qx is decreased. The increase rate of Qx, Qy and Qz for increase in Vz was $-13{\times}10^{-2}$(pc/Vz), and $60{\times}10^{-2}$(pc/Vz) and $70{\times}10^{-2}$(pc/Vz), respectively.
The propagation of an intense laser pulse through an upward density-gradient plasma in a self-modulated laser wakefield acceleration (SM-LWFA) is investigated by using particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. In the fully relativistic and kinetic PIC simulations, the relativistic and kinetic effects including Landau damping enhance the electron dephasing. This electron dephasing is the most important factor for limiting the energy of accelerated electrons. However, the electron dephasing, which is enhanced by relativistic and kinetic effects in the homogeneous plasma, can be forestalled through the detuning process arising from the longitudinal density gradient. Simulation results show that the detuning process can effectively maintain the coherence of the laser wake wave in the spatiotemporal wakefield pattern, hence considerable energy enhancement is achievable. The spatiotemporal profiles are analyzed for the detailed study on the relativistic and kinetic effects. In this paper, the optimum slope of the density gradient for increasing electron energy is presented for various laser intensities.
We analyzed the effects of several process variables on the $SO_2$ removal and particle growth by the dielectric barrier discharge - photocatalysts hybrid process. In this process, $SO_2$ was converted into the ammonium sulfate ($(NH_4)_2SO_4$) particles. The size and crystallinity of ammonium sulfate particles were examined by using TEM and XRD analysis. The dielectric barrier discharge reactor consisted of two zones: the first is for plasma generation and the second is for ammonium sulfate particles formation and growth. The first zone of reactor was filled with glass beads as a dielectric material. To enhance $SO_2$ removal process, the $TiO_2$ photocatalysts were coated on glass beads by dip-coating method. As the voltage applied to the plasma reactor or the pulse frequency of applied voltage increases, the $SO_2$ removal efficiency increases. Also as the initial concentration of $SO_2$ decreases or as the residence time increases, the $SO_2$ removal efficiency increases. $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ particles continue to grow by particle coagulation and surface reaction, moving inside the reactor. Larger particles in site are produced according to the increase of residence time or $SO_2$ concentrations.

Recently, applications of plasma display to the large public display and transparent display gain much attention. With this background, we report characteristics of opposite electrodes discharge cell with long electrode gap in comparison with conventional co-planar surface discharge. The cell size of test panel is $2950{\mu}m{\times}840{\mu}m$, which corresponds to that of the display having diagonal size of 130" with XGA resolution. Electrode gap of co-planar and opposite electrode structure are $240{\mu}m$ and $500{\mu}m$ respectively. These gap dimensions provide similar driving voltage windows. Experimental results show that opposite discharge provides approximately four fold higher luminous efficacy compared with that of the surface discharge. Resulting efficacy is found to be higher than 19 lm/W in green phosphor with 10 KHz continuous pulse operation.

When the plasma panel is used as a display, frequent discharging are made to occur by alternatively charging each side of the panel to a critical voltage, which causes repeated gas discharges to occur. In this paper, an efficient sustain driver is proposed to achieve a faster rise-time in order to be suitable to widely used ADS driving method. The proposed circuit increases an operational margin up to 20 % compared with conventional approaches improving the recovery efficiency regardless of the variation of panel capacitance. Thanks to the increased operational margin, the brightness decrease problem can be solved without a limitation to sustain pulse width. The principle of operation, and features are illustrated, and verified on a 7.5 inch diagonal panel at 200 kHz operating frequency - based on experimental prototype.

Electric-field-induced electron emission from the three kinds of $Pb(Zr_{0.56}Ti_{0.44})O_3$ ferroelectric cathodes with different electrode structure has been investigated. Regardless of the electrode structures, a threshold field of the each cathode was 2.5-2.6kV/mm, which is 3 times higher than the coercive field of $Pb(Zr_{0.56}Ti_{0.44})O_3$ material. Although the waveform of the electron currents was affected by the structure of the electrode, no significant difference for the emission properties such as the peak current and the pulse width was observed from the three kinds of the cathodes. However, the current density of the cathode was dependent on the electrode structure. From the simulation of electric field distribution, the surface flashover, and the injury region of the cathode surface, it was proved that the prime electrons were initiated at the electrode-ceramic-vacuum triple point by field emission and the emission currents were strongly enhanced by the surface plasma.
The passivation of AZ91D Mg alloys through plasma anodization depends on several process parameters, such as power mode and electrolyte composition. In this work, we study the dependence of the thickness, composition, pore formation, surface roughness, and corrosion resistance of formed films on the electrolyte temperature at which anodization is performed. The higher the electrolyte temperature, the lower is the surface roughness, the smaller is the oxide thickness, and the better is the corrosion resistance. More specifically, as the electrolyte temperature increases from 10 to $50^{\circ}C$, the surface roughness (Ra) decreases from 0.7 to $0.15{\mu}m$ and the corrosion resistance increases from 3.5 to 9 in terms of rating number in a salt spray test. The temperature increase from 10 to $50^{\circ}C$ also causes an increase in magnesium content in the film from 25 to 63 wt% and a decrease in oxygen from 66 to 21 wt%, indicating dehydration of the film.

In this study, we investigated the effect of Na2SiO3 concentration on the Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation(PEO) film formation of Al6061 alloy. The morphology of the PEO films were examined by Optical Microscope(OM) and Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM). PEO film thickness increases as the Na2SiO3 concentration increases. The elemental analysis of PEO films was conducted using Dispersive X-ray Spectrometer(EDS). The cross-sectional elemental analysis result shows that the Si concentration tends to increase as the concentration of Na2SiO3 increases. X-Ray Diffraction(XRD) analysis was performed to confirm the degree of phase change according to Na2SiO3 concentration. In addition, Vickers hardness was measured to confirm the mechanical strength of the PEO film. As the concentration of Na2SiO3 increases, the hardness value also tends to increase.
