  • The propagation characteristics of high power microwave pulse in an air-breakdown environment are examined. The maximum electron density produced by microwave air-breakdown is limited to $10^6cm^{-3}$ by the tail-erosion effect. Inorder to increase the electron density, the scheme using two pulses intersecting at a desired height is considered. Increasing the carrier frequency, it is shown that microwave pulse can be transferred without the serious erosion in the numerical simulation. This result is useful for the above scheme. Also, an experiment is conducted to show the tail-erosion effect and confirm that a rapidly generated lossy plasma can cause spectral breaking and frequency shift of a high-power microwave pulse. The experimental results are presented by comparing the frequency spectrum of an incident pulse with that of the pulse transmitted through a self-induced air-breakdown environment. The experimental results show that the amount of frequency upshift is co-related with the ionization rate, whereas that of frequency downshift is correlated with the energy losses from the pulse in the self-generated plasma.

  • A conventional power supply of a microwave oven has a 60Hz transformer and high voltage capacitor(HVC). Though it is very simple and has low cost, it has several problems such as large size, heavy weight and low efficiency To improve these problems, various high frequency inverter type power supply have been investigated and developed in recent years. But these cost is higher than the conventional one due to additional control circuit, fast switching devces. In this paper, a novel pulse power supply for microwave oven using high frequency transformer embedded HVC(High Voltage Capacitor) is proposed for down-sizing, cost reduction and efficient improvement. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed transformer, an equivalent circuit of transformer embedded HVC is derived and it's characteristic is described. And the validity of the proposed pulse power supply embedded HVC-high frequency transformer is shown by simulations and experiments accroding to various operating conditions.

  • We have built a grating-based, high-resolution, spectral line-by-line pulse shaper. By controlling individual spectral lines of a mode-locked laser output, we demonstrate the interesting functionalities of the pulse shaper for arbitrary waveform generation, such as width tunable pulse generation, phase controlled waveform generation, microwave waveform generation, etc.

  • In this paper, we have proposed a OFDM/QPSK-DMR(Orthogonal frequency Division Multiplexing/Quadrature Phase Shift Keying Modulation-Digital Microwave Radio)system using BL-PSF(Band-limited pulse shaping filter) over the Microwave channel. In the proposed DMR system, STS-1(51.84 Mbps) of SONET(Synchronous Optical NETwork) is first modulated by OFDM/QPSK symbol and used Band-limited pulse shaping filter. The advantage of the proposed DMR system is to simplify system complexity and increase IFFT/FFT block use-efficiency. The system performance of single carrier and OFDM systems is already proved that those of DMR systems have the same performance over AWGN(Additive White Gaussian Noise) channel environment. Therefore, the system is analyzed between proposed OFDM/QPSK-DMR and single carrier DMR systems and simulated by BER performance and Signature curve over Microwave channel environment. Simulation result is that the proposed system performances are approaching to the performance of single carrier DMR system as the number of Sub-carriers increasing.

  • Electron field emission properties from various CVD diamond films were studied. Diamond films were synthesized by microwave plasma CVD at 1173K and at 673K substrates temperature and pulse microwave plasma CVD at 1173K. B-doped diamond film was synthesized by microwave plasma CVD at 1173K also. Estimation by SEM, both the non-doped diamond film and B-doped diamond film which were synthesized at 1173K substrate temperature were $2~3\mu\textrm{m}$ in diameter and nucleation densities were $10^{8}{\;}numbers/\textrm{cm}^2$ order. The diamond film synthesized at 673K was $0.2\mu\textrm{m}$ in diameter and nucleation densities was 109 numbers/cm2 order. The diamond film synthesized by pulse microwave plasma CVD at 1173K was $0.2\mu\textrm{m}$ in diameter and nucleation density was $10^{9}{\;}numbers/\textrm{cm}^2$ order either. From the result of electron field emission measurement, electron field emission at $20V/\mu\textrm{m}$ from CVD diamond film synthesized by pulse microwave plasma CVD was $37.3\mu\textrm{A}/\textrm{cm}^2$ and the diamond film showed the best field emission property comparison with other CVD diamond.

  • This paper presents a pulse radar system to detect drones based on a target fluctuation model, specifically the Swerling target model. Because drones are small atypical objects and are mainly composed of non-conducting materials, their radar cross-section value is low and fluctuating. Therefore, determining the target fluctuation model and applying a proper integration method are important. The proposed system is herein experimentally verified and the results are discussed. A prototype design of the pulse radar system is based on radar equations. It adopts three different pulse modes and a coherent pulse integration to ensure a high signal-to-noise ratio. Outdoor measurements are performed with a prototype radar system to detect Doppler frequencies from both the drone frame and blades. The results indicate that the drone frame and blades are detected within an instrumental maximum range. Additionally, the results show that the drone's frame and blades are close to the Swerling 3 and 4 target models, respectively. By the analysis of the Swerling target models, proper integration methods for detecting drones are verified and can thus contribute to increasing in detectability.

  • A conventional power supply to drive a microwave oven has ferro-resonant transformer and high voltage Capacitor(HVC). Though it is simple, transformer is bulky, heavy and has low-efficiency. To improve this defect a high frequency inverter type power supply has been investigated and developed in recent years. But, because of additional control circuit and switching device, inverter-type power supply is more expensive than conventional one. • Conventional series-resonant pulse frequency modulation controlled DC-DC high power converters with a high-frequency transformer link which is designed for driving the high power microwave generator has the problem of hard switching commutation at turn-on and turn-off of active power switching devices. This problem is due to the influence of the magnetizing current of the high-frequency transformer. This paper presents a novel prototype for a high-frequency transformer using parasitic parameters with a lossless inductive snubber and a series resonant capacitor assisted series-resonant zero current switching pulse frequency modulated DC-DC power converter, which is designed using a high power magnetron for microwave ovens. In order to implement a complete and efficient soft switching commutation, the performance of the new converter topology is practically confirmed and evaluated in the prototype of a power microwave generator.

  • In this paper, we have analyzed the performance enhancement of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing/Quadrature Phase Shift Keying Modulation-Digital Microwave Radio(OFDM/QPSK-DMR) system using Band Limited-Pulse Shaping Filter(BL-PSF) over microwave channel environments. For performance enhancement, the one-tap adaptive equalizer is adopted in the OFDM/QPSK-DMR system and than both BER and signature curve performance are compared with those of single carrier DMR system. Computer simulations confirm that the OFDM/QPSK-DMR system using 16 sub-carrier increase the fade margin about 2 dB over microwave channel environments and that of performance using one-tap adaptive equalizer is highly increased the fade margin as the number of sub-carriers is larger.

  • We propose a microwave signal generation system for brain stimulation. The existing brain stimulation system uses a signal of several tens of kHz, and the magnetic field distribution is wide. Microwave is used to locally limit the distribution of the electromagnetic field and to change the action potential of the cell with less power. The switch modulates the microwave signal to obtain a pulse envelope. The action potential of the cell can be controlled to the excitation/inhibition state by adjusting the repetition frequency. These results are confirmed by measuring the cell potential of the mouse brain.
