  • In this study, an assessment method was proposed to evaluate the pullout resistance between geosynthetic and backill soil by using a stress-strain relationship of the orthotropic composite material subjected to both longitudinal and vertical loadings. For this analysis friction characteristics of geosynthetic-soil and stress-strain relationships subjected to soil confined pressure were investigated by performing the laboratory pullout tests for three types of geosynthetics and performing the confined extension tests far seven types of geosynthetics having geotextiles, composite geosynthetics and geogrids. A comparison was made between unconfined an confined moduli far each geosynthetic material to quantify the soil confinement effect on stress-strain properties. A comparison was also made between the relative increase of moduli at the same strain level among the seven geosynthetic materials to demonstrate the different responses of these geosynthetic materials under soil confinement. Based on the proposed procedure, it was shown that values of the increased tensile force are applicable fur the evaluation of friction strengths between five types of geosynthetics and sands in light of the soil confinement effect.

  • This paper presents the results of an investigation into the pull-out characteristics of screw anchor piles for use in braced excavation and cut-slope. A series of reduced-scale model tests were performed on model screw anchor piles with different geometric characteristics such as screw size and pitch length. The results indicated that the pullout resistance increases with decreasing the pitch length for a given screw size. It was also observed that the pullout capacity of a screw anchor pile increases with the screw size up to a certain size beyond which the increase becomes minimal. The results are presented in such a way that the pullout characteristics of screw piles with different screw geometric characteristics can be identified. Practical implications of the findings are discussed.

  • This paper describes interference effect analysis of transverse member based on large-scale pullout test results of steel strip reinforcement with '${\sqcap}$' type transverse member. The maximum passive resistance has a difference according to the installed location of transverse member, and the total pullout resistance is increased, when transverse member was closed to the wall facing. The degree of interference confirmed that the install location of transverse member cannot reflect the pullout force differential, if S/B is equal. However, The interference factor based on maximum passive resistance reflected the differential of maximum passive resistance and install location of transverse member.

  • Recently, the construction of coastal structures and high-rise structures against the horizontal and uplift forces increases with the developing the coastal developments. Especially the application of belled tension pile as foundation type to effectively resist uplift force is increasing in coastal structures. However, research on pullout resistance of belled tension pile has been limited and not yet been fully performed. Therefore, the pullout load tests of belled tension piles in four overseas sites were performed, then the bearing capacity, characteristics on load-displacement of piles and load distribution considering skin friction were investigated in this paper. In addition, the limit pullout bearing capacity calculated by the three-dimensional finite element analysis and theoretical methods were compared with values of in-situ test.

  • In this study, a large-scale direct shear test was performed to evaluate the shear characteristics of the pile-soil interface according to the fines content and confining pressure conditions as a reasonable evaluation method of the pullout resistance performance of pile considering the soil conditions. It was found that the shear stress was greatly generated under the conditions of high normal stress and low fines content. In addition, the maximum shear stress was found to be rather large under the conditions of the same normal stress and fines content, when pile surface had high roughness. The internal friction angle decreased at the pile-soil interface, when the fines content in the ground increased. On the other hand, the cohesion decreased under the condition of high fines content. And the internal friction angle and cohesion were large regardless of the fines content in the model ground, when the roughness of the pile surface was high.

  • In this study, laboratory model test was performed to estimate pullout behavior of pipe type anchor with surface roughness, embedment and diameter. The design of buried pipe anchors in areas of vertical ground movement is governed, in part, by magnitude of the forces imposed on the pipe and displacements at which they are developed. In this paper, uplift resistance and displacement characteristics of pipe anchors caused by ground condition and embedment ratio, surface roughness, pipe diameter through the analysis of pipe anchor model test were compared and analyzed. The test results of the buried pipe showed that as the relative density increases, ultimate uplift resistance increase in 20%. When pipe anchor is failed with the relative density of the ground, the change of surface roughness, it was shown that the deformation increases as the ratio of penetration increases from 2 to 8 in five times approximately. And most anchor-based theories overestimate the breakout factor.

  • In this study, laboratory pull-out tests and finite element modeling are carried out focused on the grid effects of geogrid and the analyses of friction characteristics associated with interaction behaviors of the composite reinforcement composed of geogrid with a superior function in tensile resistance and geotextile with sufficient drainage effects. In addition, drainage effects of the geotextile below geogrid are examined based on the analysis of finite difference numerical modeling. From the present investigation, it is concluded that the geosynthetic composite reinforcement in the weathered granite backfills may possibly be used to achieve effects on both a reduction of deformations and an increase of the tensile resistance, together with drainage effects due to the geotextile.

  • The superiority of bearing ground anchor system has been recognized for the stability and economical efficiency since 1950s in Japan, Europe and etc. The ground anchor introduced in Korea, however, has the structural problem that the tensile strength comes only from the ground frictional force caused by the expansion of the wedge body and it is impossible to evaluate the bearing resistance because the adhering method of the anchor body to hollow wall is not appropriate. In this study, the underreamed ground anchor system was developed so that the bearing pressure of ground anchor can exert as much as possible. And the in-situ tests were performed to evaluate the pullout behavior characteristics and to verify the decreasing effect of the bonded length. The pullout tests were performed with the non-grouted tension condition and grouted tension condition in order to identify the pull-out resistance of each conditions. In addition, it was compared with the results of friction anchor. Finally, the numerical analysis was fulfilled to verify the bearing effect at the bonded part through the detailed modeling by PLAXIS-2D, which is general finite element method analysis program.

  • In this study, we tried to confirm the influence range in the ground due to Bulbed, Reinforcement change and ground conditions change through numerical analysis. By checking the increase width of the reinforcement effect accompanying the increase of Bulbed, grasping the trend accompanying the change of the ground conditions and deciding soil nail Reinforcement and Bulbed, so that economical construction will be carried out It can be judged that it can be utilized as basic material. In this paper, we analyzed the Displacement due to positional load of reinforcement by utilizing MIDAS GTS NX which is a universal numerical analysis program. In addition, it is necessary to ensure the diameter star economy of Bulbed size and Reinforcement by comparing / analyzing whether the Bulbed relaxation region of Reinforcement represents arbitrary characteristics in the ground in Sandy soil, Weathered granite soil ground due to soil nail pullout load Numerical analysis was conducted to select criteria that can be done.

  • Depending on the underground load support mechanism, anchors are classified as friction anchors, bearing plate anchors and the recently developed combined friction-bearing plate anchors which combine the characteristics of both the friction and bearing plate type anchors. Even though numerous studies have been performed on bearing plate anchors, there were only few studies performed to observe the failure surface of bearing plate anchors. Furthermore most of the soil materials used on these tests were not real sand but carbon rods. In this study, sand was placed in the soil tank and laboratory tests were performed with bearing plate anchors installed with an embedment depth (H/h) ranging from 1~6. The variation in the pullout capacity and the behaviour of soil with the embedment depth (H/h) were observed. Ground deformation analysis program was also used to analyze soil displacement, zero extension direction, maximum shear strain contours. It was determined from the analysis of the results that at ultimate pullout resistance the deformation was 5 mm and the failure surface occurred in a narrower area when compared with results of the previous researches. It was also observed that the width of the fracture surface gradually becomes wider and expands up to the surface as the deformation increases from 10 mm to 15 mm.
