  • Interviews with 17 Korean American professionals living in Korea revealed the relationship between their status, cultural identities, social capital, and conflicts that arise between their understanding of American and Korean social norms. The findings indicate that social capital for Korean Americans in Korea largely comprises of their English community in Korea and the Seoul Global Center; and that their access to social capital in the Korean society, in general, is limited. As result of limited availability and accessibility of social capital, with a sense of superiority, they maintained their American identity. In terms of social control, their lack of motivation to adopt and follow Korean social norms, as well as them being from the U.S., limited changes occurred in their cultural identity. Extending previous research on the Theory of Intercultural Public Relations, the public's power allows them to maintain their cultural identity, which in turn, effect their communication process. Implications of these findings, as well as suggestions for future study, are discussed.

This study concluded, first, PWDs' experience with the PR of the library services was a very low 32.4%. Intellectual disabilities, especially, were reported to have no experience in public relations. Second, the library public relations media which PWDs utilized the most were the Internet, library bulletin boards, banners, ARS services, and podcasting, in that order. However, satisfaction with promotions appeared below average(3 points or less). On the other hand, interest in public relations media was very high. Third, it appeared that library users with disabilities most frequently use the websites of their school library, the National Library of Korea, and public libraries in that order. However, the usage rate of services and users' satisfaction with them were very low. Finally, a high demand for facilities with accessibility to PWD users emerged as a result of this study. Therefore, this study recommends greater accessibility, convenience, and ease of facility use for persons with disabilities.

  • The aim of this article is to rethink the role of international trade as a public diplomacy tool by considering the uncertainties that stem from political tensions. The main contribution made in this article is theoretical rather than statistical. However, we analyze trade and public opinion data to study the relationship between both factors. Using Latinobarometer, a cross-sectional survey that collects public opinion data from Latin America, this article analyses public opinion toward the United States and China. One of the main takeaways from this study is that, despite its potential to showcase political stability, public diplomacy undervalues 'unintended consequences' of international trade relations. This article takes up international trade as an unintended, but arguably effective, resource to be developed for the practice of public diplomacy. Findings presented in this article do not claim causation between trade and opinion, something that can be explored by further research, but rather introduce new questions for further research on the public diplomacy of trade relations.

Method: Employees working for L company were surveyed about the disaster response department, disaster message, and perception of the company during the company's response to COVID-19, as well as the level of response behavior of the employee. Results: First, caller characteristics did not have a significant effect on behavioral changes of members. Second, while the disaster response message within the company had no effect on the members' normative behavior, it had a positive effect on the discretionary behavior. Third, caller characteristics and disaster response messages had a positive effect on public relations, and public relations appeared to mediate caller characteristics and members' discretionary behavior. Conclusion: Studies on disaster response messages are required in the disaster control tower inside the company in normal times, and activities to build a member-friendly corporate culture for strengthening public relations are needed.

  • Objectives: Socioeconomic disadvantages interact with numerous factors which affect geriatric mental health. One of the main factors is the social relations of the elderly. The elderly have different experiences and meanings in their social lives depending on their socio-cultural environment. In this study, we compared the effects of social relations on depression among the elderly according to their living arrangement (living alone or living with others) and residential area. Methods: We defined social relations as "meetings with neighbors" (MN). We then analyzed the impact of MN on depression using data from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging Panel with the generalized estimating equation model. We also examined the moderating effect of living alone and performed subgroup analysis by dividing the sample according to which area they lived in. Results: MN was associated with a reduced risk of depressive symptoms among elderlies. The size of the effect was larger in rural areas than in large cities. However, elderly those who lived alone in rural areas had a smaller protective impact of MN on depression, comparing to those who lived with others. The moderating effect of living alone was significant only in rural areas. Conclusions: The social relations among elderlies had a positive effect on their mental health: The more frequent MN were held, the less risk of depressive symptoms occurred. However, the effect may vary depending on their living arrangement and environment. Thus, policies or programs targeting to enhance geriatric mental health should consider different socio-cultural backgrounds among elderlies.
