  • Busan Metropolitan City government has been implementing the local Bus Quasi-Public Operating policy since 2007. As a result of the policy, financial burden to cover financial deficit has become a big social issue. For successful settlement of the policy, the government should be able to gradually cut off the financial support for the deficit by continuously increasing the bus demand, which can be accomplished by providing more convenient bus services. The weather conditions that affect the public transportation demand include rain, fog and snow. They affect the mode choice for public transportation use, which in turn results in decrease in bus demand. In short, the adverse weather conditions result in significant profit loss of bus transportation, and consequently it financially burdens the City of Busan. In this research, the pattern of travelers' use of transportation modes given various weather conditions was analyzed. In addition, the reasons why people transfer from one to other transportation modes were analyzed by conducting a field survey, and policy implications on desirable public transportation facilities and transfer system were discussed.

  • Urban rails and buses are representative public transit systems that not only cooperate with each other, but also compete with each other. In other words, there is a possibility that the overall demand for public transportation may increase due to the introduction of a competitive public transportation system, or there is a possibility that demand will be maintained at the level that is simply converted to a competitive system. The objective of this study is to analyze the change in public transit flow when an additional transit system is introduced in a city with alternative public transit systems. To carry out this objective, we analyzed changes in public transit passenger flow before and after the introduction of an urban rail transit line 3 in Daegu Metropolitan City, where two public transit systems, urban rail and bus, exist. For accurate analysis, big data collected by passenger transportation cards were utilized for one week in the second week of April 2015, 2016, and 2019. From the analysis, it was found that although the urban rail passenger flow increased due to the additional urban rail transit system, the change in the overall public transit passenger flow in the city was insignificant. In other words, it is interpreted that the bus transit passengers have been shifted to the urban transit systems. Based on the results, this study suggested various policies to increase the demand for public transit rather than simply adding public transit systems.

  • This study dealt with Traffic Problem to Cheonan city. This study ran parallel literature investigation and actual proof investigation. Questionnaires 394 enforce frequency analysis in SPSS 15.0 versions. Traffic Problem to Cheonan city include the discomfort of public transportation, parking problem, pollution of automobile, traffic accident. By improvement of traffic problem, first, improvement plan of transportation system by administration of logical traffic demand should be readied. Second, because Cheonan city is many an university student who is use target of public transportation, public transportation utilization ratio must raise through discount application. Third, solution of traffic jam need to the improvement and strengthening of system of public transit. Fourth, Cheonan city must push ahead with supplies of traffic facility, modify of transportation network, and improvement of operating system. In particular, Cheonan city need to modify old road and improvement of accessibility though road network briefly. Fifth, Cheonan city need fixing of van traffic culture such as solution of parking problem and traffic order consciousness fostering of users.

  • This study proposes an integrated accessibility measurement algorithm, which is applied to the Seoul Metropolitan public transportation system consisting of bus and subway networks, and analyzes the result. We construct a public transportation network graph linking bus-subway networks and take the time distance as the link weight in the graph. We develop a time-distance algorithm to measure the time distance between each pair of transit stations based on the T-card transaction database. The average travel time between nodes has been computed via the shortest-path algorithm applied to the time-distance matrix, which is obtained from the average speed of each transit route in the T-card transaction database. Here the walking time between nodes is also taken into account if walking is involved. The integrated time-distance accessibility of each node in the Seoul Metropolitan public transportation system has been computed from the T-card data of 2013. We make a comparison between the results and those of the bus system and of the subway system, and analyze the spatial patterns. This study is the first attempt to measure the integrated time-distance accessibility for the Seoul Metropolitan public transportation system consisting of 16,277 nodes with 600 bus routes and 16 subway lines.

  • Recently, the need to introduce bus lines on a welfare basis is increasing as public intervention in bus routes is accelerated through semi-public bus system. The main objective of this study is to establish the concept of PSO (public service obligation) bus line on a welfare basis and propose a classification method of PSO bus line under semi-public bus system. We introduced 3 indexes such as "equity" in terms of bus line distribution, "publicity" in terms of age distribution, and "profitability" in terms of bus operating revenues. On the basis of 3 indexes, we introduced the PSO bus line, which is fair and public, even if it is not profitable. Based on the concept established in this study, we divided 130 ordinary city bus lines in Busan Metropolitan City into 8 PSO bus lines. Also, considering the positive impact of public buses, which are less profitable, but improve the mobility of residents and secure public community, we suggested the need to introduce public buses in bus service shortage areas.

  • Recognition for the importance and roles of public transportation is increasing because of traffic problems in many cities. In spite of this paradigm change, previous researches related with public transportation trip assignment have limits in some aspects. Especially, in case of multimodal public transportation networks, many characters should be considered such as transfers. operational time schedules, waiting time and travel cost. After metropolitan integrated transfer discount system was carried out, transfer trips are increasing among traffic modes and this takes the variation of users' route choices. Moreover, the advent of high-technology public transportation card called smart card, public transportation users' travel information can be recorded automatically and this gives many researchers new analytical methodology for multimodal public transportation networks. In this paper, it is suggested that the methodology for establishment of brand new multimodal public transportation networks based on computer programming methods using transportation card data. First, we propose the building method of integrated transportation networks based on bus and urban railroad stations in order to make full use of travel information from transportation card data. Second, it is offered how to connect the broken transfer links by computer-based programming techniques. This is very helpful to solve the transfer problems that existing transportation networks have. Lastly, we give the methodology for users' paths finding and network establishment among multi-modes in multimodal public transportation networks. By using proposed methodology in this research, it becomes easy to build multimodal public transportation networks with existing bus and urban railroad station coordinates. Also, without extra works including transfer links connection, it is possible to make large-scaled multimodal public transportation networks. In the end, this study can contribute to solve users' paths finding problem among multi-modes which is regarded as an unsolved issue in existing transportation networks.

  • Most transportation problems are expected to be dealt with by public sector, mainly government organizations, even though few articles are available to tackle the problems from the administrative points of view. This study has the following scopes: to define the transportation system; to derive the subsystems, i.e., the functions of the system; to identify the elements (or organizations) of performing the functions; to study the inter-organizational relationships among the elements and to derive problem areas; and finally to propose a new administrative system for solving the problems. System Theory was exclusively used for defining the system and deriving subsystems of transportation. Laws and regulations about government organizations were analyzed to identify the relevant organizations. Communications analysis was used for deriving the relationships among the organizations. Ledger books containing incoming-and-outgoing documents in the sampled organizations were inputed onto computer. Exactly 49,367 records(i.e., information flows) were stored for this analysis. Finally, this study proposed a new administrative system that is expected to result in more cooperative and productive inter-organizational relationships among the transportation organizations.

  • As of these, the exterior design of the public transportation systems, especially electric multiple, tends to mimic advanced country's design rather than design of car shape reflecting cultural and spiritual background. However, in the new transportation system, the design which satisfies the transportation demand must be changed into the design which creates transportation demand. In this respect, this research focuses on the factor's embodiment which is perceived by Korean passenger sympathetic to cultural and spiritual needs. The results of this research are Korean AGT design on rubber tire AGT, steel wheel AGT, LM AGT system and environmental design related to AGT systems.
