A Comparative Understanding of Health Concepts

  • This study explored the understanding of health of people from Korea. Data were collected from a total of eighteen focus groups: Koreans (living in Korea), Korean-Australians, Korean-Americans and Australians. The data were analysed using QSR NUD*IST. The meaning of health varied among people and it was related to differences in age, culture, gender, marital status and perceived health status of individuals. However, there were several themes common to everybody. All groups included aspects of physical, mental, emotional (and spiritual), environmental and social dimensions in their definitions of health. All young single groups placed more emphasis on physical and lifestyle factors whereas mental and emotional aspects and social responsibility were more associated with health among older married groups. Young women in all cultures felt social pressure to 'look good' and the media was perceived as responsible. Men in general associated health with societal roles and social competition. Health was strongly associated with the economy and economic stability for all Korean groups reflecting the recent adverse economic situation in Korea. This information will be of value to health professionals to provide more effective health services and health promotion programs for clients of Korean ethnicity living in multicultural societies like Australia and America.

Challenges and Future Directions for Health Promotion Practice and Research in Private Sectors: Focusing on the KAHP Experiences (민간부문의 건강증진 사업과 연구 현황, 발전방향과 과제 - 한국건강관리협회의 건강증진 사업과 연구를 중심으로 -)

  • Objectives: This paper aims to discuss the current situation of and future directions for health promotion practice(HPP) and research in private sectors in Korea. Methods: Publications and web-site information of public health organizations, WHO-Health Promoting Hospitals member institutes, health/medical academic societies, and professional unities were collected and reviewed. Activities of Korea Association of Health Promotion(KAHP) were described in detail considering its leading role in health examination and promotion field in Korea. Results: The most common HPPs in private sectors were health education and public health campaigns for the prevention and management of diseases. Tailored health promotion programs for lifestyle changes and longitudinal follow-ups were the routine process for managing high risk groups at KAHP. Health promotion research in private sectors have focused on identifying health problems and behavioral determinants, and planning, implementing and evaluating health promotion programs. The most serious issues in HPPs of the private sectors were limited budget and manpower along with a lack of public recognition and a system-level support. Conclusion: To promote HPPs and research in private sectors, a system for financial sustainability should be introduced. They also need scientific evidence from research. 'Borderline medicine', a discipline specialized in management of high risk borderline group, could lead HPPs to sustainable private practices.

Nutritional Status and Cognitive Status of the Elderly Using Public Health Center in Ulsan (울산지역 보건소 이용 노인들의 영양상태와 인지상태)

  • This study was designed to obtain the information concerning food intake, dietary habits, functional status, health condition and cognitive status of the elderly using public health center in Ulsan area. The subjects of this study consisted 154 elderly persons aged 60~82 years. Interviews were conducted using the health habits and food frequency questionnaires to provide basic information for nutrition education program. We evaluated the current food intake, dietary cholesterol intake (cholesterol index), functional status, cognitive function and blood analysis of the subjects. The results of this study were as follows : Mean age of the subjects was 68.7 $\pm$ 6.7years. The average cognitive status score of the subjects was 7.9 $\pm$ 2.0 (full score was 10.0). Male had a higher cognitive status score than female. There was significant difference between cognitive status score and age, education level, pocket money, physical activity and living condition. The subjects who had a higher cognitive status score ate more fish and meats group and milk and milk products than the subjects had a lower cognitive status score. And hemoglobin level, serum triglyceride, HDL-cholesterol and atherogenic index affected to cognitive status while fasting blood glucose and LDL-cholesterol did not any effect on cognitive status. These results have demonstrated that various socioeconomic variables and food intake pattern and nutritional status affect on cognitive status with aging and suggest that proper nutrition education and adequate nutrient intake in quality and quantity are essential in maintaining cognitive status in later life.

Job Analysis of a Staff who Manage Quit-smoking Policy on Health Centers (보건소 금연사업 담당자의 직무분석)

  • Objectives: This job analysis of a staff in charge of quit-smoking policy at public health centers aims at providing fundamental information to establish strategies supporting various quit-smoking. Methods: The job analysis of a staff in charge of quit-smoking policy at public health centers was carried out through DACUM(Development of Curriculum) method from April through May 2006. Three experts had developed job description with staffs in charge of quit-smoking policy at public health centers through two workshops. The survey was practiced for staff in charge of quit-smoking policy at the other public health centers. The characteristics of the staffs such as age, years for working at public health center, years for charging with quit-smoking work, the proportion of responsibility for quit-smoking work, were surveyed. Results: The research has reached the conclusions below. 1. The job description have been developed considering input-process-outcome axis and plan-do-evaluation axis for quit-smoking policy at public health centers. The final job description is composed of 3 missions, 7 accountabilities, 20 sub-work items. 2. The quit-smoking activity mostly focused at direct education and counselling. But planing and evaluation activity for quit-smoking have been under-achieved. 3. The staffs for quit-smoking policy were feel it is easy to educate and counsel to comer to public health centers for quit-smoking. But having the high proportion of responsibility for quit-smoking policy have usually difficult to do that. So they want to education about counselling for smoker. 4. The staffs who worked over the 2 years for quit-smoking policy the public health center have responded that investigate the smoking rate of the jurisdiction community and the problem of the culture about smoking and smoking policy is important. Conclusions: The study helps reinforcing the initiatives of central government for quit-smoking policy at public health centers. Especially staffs want education in technology area for counselling smoker. And they want nationwide supporting for investigating smoking rate and related factors at the local level.

The Impact of Occupational Safety and Health Information on Precarious Workers' Self-rated Health (안전보건정보 제공이 일용근로자의 주관적 건강인식에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives: This study aimed to confirm the relationship between occupational safety and health information and self-rated health among precarious workers. Methods: A cross-sectional explanatory study design was conducted using data from the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency's 6th Korean Working Conditions Survey. The participants were 1,569 precarious workers living in South Korea. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression were used for data analyses by SPSS (version 25.0). Results: As a result of the study, occupational safety and health information had a significant positive effect on the self-rated health of precarious workers. The results suggest that occupational safety and health information contributes to the self-rated health of precarious workers. Conclusions: Therefore, it is suggested that policies should be developed to improve occupational safety and health information in workplaces. In addition, strategies should be developed to promote the usefulness of occupational safety and health information to precarious workers.

Information Sources for Serbian Women on Cervical Carcinoma Risk Factors

  • Background: The epidemiological situation regarding cervical carcinoma in Serbia is rather unfavorable and one of contributing factors is the insufficient interest of women concerning the risk factors responsible for occurrence of this disease. The aim of this study was to determine the sources of relevant information for women Methods: An anonymous questionnaire was used for questioning of patients, students and women undergoing systematic examinations. There were 600 women in total in 2006, 2009 and 2010, and the data were statistically processed by the ${\chi}^2$ test with Yates correction and the Fisher test. Results: When observed for certain groups of tested women, and summed up for all three periods, there was a statistically significant difference for the answer "without any knowledge" (p=0.0001). When observed for certain years and summed up for all three tested groups, there was a statistically significant difference in answers regarding the source of information, the "doctor" (p=0.0011), "media" (p=0.0349) and "encyclopedia-internet" (p=0.0136). Conclusion: The media are a dominant source of information for women on risk factors for cervical cancer. The significance of the Internet increased during the three observed periods, while the students considered themselves least informed of all concerning risk factors.

An Analysis of Factors Affecting Quality of Life through the Analysis of Public Health Big Data (클라우드 기반의 공개의료 빅데이터 분석을 통한 삶의 질에 영향을 미치는 요인분석)

  • In this study, we analyzed public health data analysis using the hadoop-based spack in the cloud environment using the data of the Community Health Survey from 2012 to 2014, and the factors affecting the quality of life and quality of life. In the proposed paper, we constructed a cloud manager for parallel processing support using Hadoop - based Spack for open medical big data analysis. And we analyzed the factors affecting the "quality of life" of the individual among open medical big data quickly without restriction of hardware. The effects of public health data on health - related quality of life were classified into personal characteristics and community characteristics. And multiple-level regression analysis (ANOVA, t-test). As a result of the experiment, the factors affecting the quality of life were 73.8 points for men and 70.0 points for women, indicating that men had higher health - related quality of life than women.

Strategies to approach the customized health management service to prevent chronic diseases (만성질환 예방을 위한 맞춤형 건강관리 서비스의 접근전략과 발전방향)

  • Objectives: Life style modification leads to decrease health risk and change of health status for person at health risk. This study aimed to suggest essential components and effective strategies for customized health management service to provide individual and risk group in public and private health care organizations. Methods: To systematic review the essential component of health management service, I performed to collect political legislation, research papers, reports, publication and public release for heath management service from 2008 to 2016. Essential components of heath management service were service scope, service design, organizations and applied technology. Results: Service cope was composed of health risk factors, such as smoking, drinking, nutrition, physical activity and weight control. Main strategies were customized health management services, personalized behavior modification programs, evidence-based service protocol, utilization of information and communications technology (ICT), multi-dimension and multi-level approach, and public and private organizations partnership through health policies and health care system. Conclusions: To make the most of the limited resources, it should require a systematic approach that focuses on continuous monitoring and partnership of health management service.
