  • Oculomotor nerve palsy presents itself with sudden onset unilateral ptosis and inability to turn the eye upward, downward, or inward, which causes visual disturbances. Strabismus caused oculomotor nerve palsy refers to muscle imbalance that results in improper alignment of the visual axes of the two eyes It may be divided into paralytic and non paralytic strabismus. paralytic strabismus is primarily a neurologic problem. Characteristic clinical disturbances result from lesions of the third, fourth, and sixth cranial nerves. Lesions of the third nerve result in a paralysis of lateral or outward movement and a crossing of the visual axes. Objective: This study was designed to evaluate the effects of oriental medicine therapy on a peripheral oculomotor nerve palsy. Methods & Result: The clinical data was analyzed on a patient with oculomotor nerve palsy whose main symptoms were right side ptosis and inability to turn the eye inward. The patient was treated by the electroacupucture(4Hz frequency, intensity was adjusted so that localized muscle contractions could be seen). As the result, symptoms are improved remarkably. Conclusion: The patient showed right eye ptosis and unilateral deviation of the right eye ball in neutral position. After acupuncture treatment and electroacupuncture treatment, the ptosis and deviation of the patient's right eye was recovered six weeks after the onset. The study suggests that oriental medicine therapy is significantly effective on the treatment of peripheral oculomotor nerve palsy.

  • Objectives : The aim of this study is to report a case of idiopathic oculomotor nerve palsy improved by Korean Medicine therapy including needle-embedding therapy. Methods : We treated a 69-year old male patient who has Rt. ptosis, Rt. eye movement impairment, and dizziness with various Korean medical therapy including acupuncture, Bojungikgitanggami, and Hominis Placenta pharmacopuncture. To promote recovery, we additionally performed needle-embedding therapy to periocular acupoints. Results : Ptosis started to remarkably improve after performing needle-embedding therapy. After 54 days of treatment, ptosis and eye movement impairment of Rt. eye were significantly improved similar to the normal eye. Dizziness was cured in a few days after administration. Conclusions : This case suggests Korean medicine including needle-embedding therapy is effective against oculomotor nerve palsy symptoms especially for ptosis.

The change of ptosis was evaluated by measurement of palpebral fissure width. The change of gaze palsy and strabismus were evaluated by comparison the photographs of the extraocular movements of patient. Strabismus also was evaluated by corneal reflex test. Results : Gaze palsy and strabismus were improved. Ptosis disappeared after Korean medicine treatment. Conclusions : Korean medicine treatment should be effective for the ocular motility disorders caused by thalamus, midbrain and pontine infarctions.

  • I examined and referred to literatures of every generations on the nicknames, causes, herb medications and acupucture treatments of ptosis(上胞下垂) And then the results were obtained as follows. 1. The nicknames of ptosis(上胞下垂) are hyumok(휴목), chimpung(侵風), geompye(瞼廢), geompisubok(瞼皮垂覆), posu(胞垂) and bigwon(脾倦) which corresponds to blepharoptosis in Western Medicine. 2. The congenital ptosis(上胞下垂) is mostly caused by innate disposition(稟賦不足). The acquired ptosis(上胞下垂) is mostly caused by Qi sinking of Tri-energizer(中氣下陷). And besides this, there are Blood stasis due to Qi stagnancy(氣滯血瘀), invasion of the eyelid by wind(風邪入絡), Qi and Blood deficiency(氣血不足), Phlegm syndrome due to wind(風痰阻絡), Wind syndrome due to Yang hypertrophy(陽亢動風) and Stagnation of Liver Qi(肝氣鬱結). 3. In herb medication of ptosis(上胞下垂), Bojungikgitang(補中益氣湯) was used 14 times most and its effects are nourishing the spleen to promote the flow of Qi(健脾益氣) and elevating the YangQi and activation the meridian(升陽活絡). In the following, Insamyangyeongtang(人蔘養榮湯) was done 6 times and has effects of promoting the Qi and activating the blood(益氣養血) and of promoting blood circulation and restoring flow(活血通絡). The next, Jungyongtang(正容湯) appeared 5 times and this can expel wind, resolve phlegm and restore flow(祛風滌痰通絡). As single herb, Radix glycyrrhizae(甘草) was used 66 times most. Besides this, there are a few herbs used many times like Rhizoma atractylodis macrocephalae(白朮), Radix angelicae gogantis(當歸), Radix ginseng(人蔘). Radix astragali(황기) and Rhizoma cimicifugae(升麻). 4. In acupunture treatment, Chanzhu(撰竹) was used 19 times most. Besides this acupoint, there are some points choson frequently like Zusanli(足三里), Sanyinjiao(三飮交), Yangbai(陽白), Taiyang(太陽), Tongziliao(瞳子 ), Jingming(晴明), Hegu(合谷) and Fengchi(風池).

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of Joganiknoe-tang on diplopia and ptosis from cerebrovascular disease. Methods : We recruited 2 patients who have diplopia and ptosis because of cerebrovascular disease. In addition, the patients had been administrated by Joganiknoe-tang. Diplopia and ptosis of patients had been estimated with VAS (Visual Analogue Scale) and difference of both eye's interpalpebral fissure. We measured VAS (Visual Analogue Scale) and difference of both eye's interpalpebral fissure for every five days Results : After the treatments, symptoms were decreased and almost disappeared. In both cases, diplopia patients complained decreased from VAS 10 to VAS 1, and difference of both eye's interpalpebral fissure disappeared Conclusions : This study suggests that Joganiknoe-tang is significantly effective on diplopia and ptosis because of cerebrovascular disease.

  • Purpose: Together with the breast, buttocks are an important element of attractive body contour. To make a beautiful buttocks, improvement of body contour around the buttock as well as buttock augmentation and lifting is also important. The authors investigated characteristic features of buttocks in Koreans and report about the results of liposculpture and autologous fat injection for improving buttock's contour. Methods: We performed a retrospective study of 21 patients who would like to gluteal reshaping. We checked about buttock's ptosis, projection, depression, gluteal retraction and excessive fat accumulation around buttocks. Depending on it, we performed liposculpture and autologous fat injection. Under general anesthesia, we harvested fat from excessive fat accumulation areas around buttocks, and injected into buttocks medio-superiorly. Postoperatively, pillows were positioned on the bed not to press the buttocks which were injected with the fat. Results: Based on the shape of buttocks, A-shape is seen in 4 cases (19%), V-shape 3 cases (14%), squareshape 9 cases (43%), round-shape 5 cases (24%). Based on the Gonzalez's ptosis grading method, 1 degree ptosis is 1 case (4%), 2 degree ptosis is 6 cases (29%), 3 degree ptosis is 8 cases (38%), 4 degree ptosis is 6 cases (29%). There were no complications such as infection, hematoma, pain, dysparethesia. The subjective assessment of surgical results by patients was excellent. Conclusion: To make a beautiful buttock, improvement of body contour around the buttock as well as buttock augmentation and lifting is also important. Liposculpture and autologous fat grafting are very safe, useful and easy methods for improving buttock's contour.

We evaluated changes in ptosis by measuring the vertical distance for the frontal gaze of the right eye. Result: After 32 days of Korean medicine treatment the vertical distance for the frontal gaze of the right eye increased from 0 to 9 cm. Conclusion: The study findings suggest that Korean medicine might be effective in treating ptosis due to a paramedian midbrain infarction.
