  • This research utilized the psychophysical methodology, where secrw drivers are used, to determine the effects of i) the location and orientation of work objects, and ii) wearing gloves, on ratings of perceived exertion at various body parts. The validity of the psychophysical methodology in determining a preferred work pace was also studied. The subjects drove screws with a screw driver into thick wooden sheet at three vertical and three horizontal locations. They drove serews for 3 minutes at each location and assessed the condition using the psychophysical scale. The results showed that only the vertical location was a significant factor in determining the discomfort ratings. Driving screws at elbow height on the vertical surface and with the lower arm close to the body on the horizontal surface were the work locations with the smallest ratings of perceived discomfort. Wearing gloves had significant effects on reducing the pain of the hand. From the experiment in which a comfortable work pace was identified using 20 minute psychophysical adjustment, it was found that the psychophysical method is sensitive to workers perception of the physical stress when the upper limbs are employed. This was confirmend by the high correlation between the psychophysical results and EMG measurement.

  • Low back pain (LBP) is a major issue in modern industrialized society which is mainly caused by manual material handling (MMH) tasks. The objective of this study was to provide scientific data for establishing work standard for Korean workers throughout the laboratory experiment including some specific lifting tasks. Thirty male college students were recruited as participants. The maximum voluntary contraction (MVC), recommended weight limit (RWL), and psychophysical safety weight using Borg's CR-10 scale were studied. Results showed that the RWL was 8.4% MVC higher than the proposed psychophysical safety weight. Based on this result, it is suggested that the NIOSH lifting equation (NLE) should not be directly applied to Korean without reasonable modifications. The ratio of psychophysical safety weight to MVC was ranged from 20.1 to 26.4%. It is expected that use of the methodology in this study may provide better expectation of the work ability of Korean for reducing lower back pains caused by MMH.

  • This paper summarizes recent research in the use of the psychophysical method of adjustment to establish acceptable parameters for upper extremity work activities. Results from these studies show that this psychophysical approach can provide reliable guidelines based upon realistic job conditions which involve one or more risk factors for cumulative trauma. It is also shown that this method provides advantages over other psychophysical methods as well as current biomechanical and physioligical criteria.

  • The muscular-skeletal disorders that have become a major issue recently in Korean industrial safety area are mainly caused by manual material handling task. The objective of this study is to provide scientific data for the establishment of work safety standard for Korean workers through the experiments of lifting task under various conditions, in order to prevent the muscular-skeletal disorders in the industrial work site. This study used the psychophysical approach to determine the maximum acceptable weight(MAWL) for seven young male subjects, and used isometric and isoinertial strength variables as predictors to develop prediction models. Also, the oxygen consumption, heart rate, and RPE were measured or recorded while subjects were lifting their MAWL. Three different lifting frequencies(1, 3, 5lifts/min) with two lifting range from floor to knuckle height and knuckle to shoulder height for one hour's work shift using free style lifting technique were studied. These results may not only provide scientific data in establishing the safety standards for Korean workers' lifting tasks, but also contribute preventing the rapidly increasing muscular-skeletal disorders lately on the industrial site.

  • The objectives of this study were to evaluate color sensation for yellowish natural dye fabrics using magnitude estimation to determine physical colorimetric factors significantly related to human sensibility by establishing power function in psychophysical analysis. Fourteen different yellowish fabrics dyed with natural colorants were selected as stimuli and subjective color sensations including brightness, heaviness, softness, strength, warmth, activeness, classicalness, femininity, and pleasantness for each stimulus were evaluated. As results, yellowish natural dye fabrics in general seemed to evoke feeling of brightness, femininity, and pleasantness more strongly than that of heaviness and classicalness. Most of color sensation were significantly related with more than one of physical color properties, which leads to establishing reliable power functions between them. In the power functions, these relationships could be utilized to design color-sensible natural dye textiles.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the metabolic energy consumption rate of the psychophysical Maximum Acceptable Weight of Loads (MAWLs) for different manual materials handling tasks. Lifting activities with four different lifting frequencies (2, 5, 8, 11 lifts/min) for a lifting range (from floor to 76cm height) were studied. The oxygen consumption rate and heart rate were measured or recorded while subjects were lifting their MAWLs. It was found that the relationship between MAWL and frequency can be described best by the exponential function with the R-sq value 0.9865 for this study. Psychophysical MAWL decreased from 22.38 to 7.48 kg, while the oxygen consumption rate with the MAWL increased from 717.8 to $1114.7m{\ell}-O_2/min$ as the frequency increased from 2 to 11 lifts/min. Heart rate also increased from 104.5 to 120.7 bpm. The ratio of oxygen consumption for the MAWL to the Physical Work Capacity (PWC) ranged from 28 to 43%. The MAWLs were greater than or equal to the Maximum Permissible Limits (MPLs) when the frequencies were higher than 8 lifts/min. It seems that the MAWLs by psychophysical approach when the frequencies were higher than 8 lifts/min tend to be overestimated from the viewpoint of the physiological criterion of the oxygen consumption rates. From these findings it is suggested that the NIOSH Guideline should not be directly applied to Korean without reasonable modifications.

  • Activity of lifting has been a major issue in many research area related in manual materials handling tasks. However, the opposite activity of lifting, lowering, has received much less attention. It is known that 52% of all box-handling tasks were lowering in nature. The difference in stress between lifting and lowering activity is not well understood. A simple assumption that these two activities are very similar has been established and widely used. However, this simple assumption may be questionable. The objective of this study was to compare a lifting activity and a lowering activity based on the three different ergonomic approaches; (1) biomechanical, (2) physiological, (3) psychophysical approach. It was found that the stress of lowering activity was from 65% to 93%, from 87% to 97%, and from 87% to 96% according to the biomechanical, physiological, and psychophysical point of view, respectively. It is concluded from the result of this study that the stress of lowering activity is lower than that of the lifting activity. The maximum compressive force on the lumbro-sacral joint (L5/S1) was 158% and 108% respectively, for lifting and lowering activity of which the work load is the 58% of Action Limit. It is suggested that the NIOSH AL and RWL and biomechanical criteria should be reconsidered especially for the low frequency of lifting activities.

  • Psychophysical approaches to the room acoustics have been made in number of researches. The present study is looking at whether the listener's perception of frequency change in rooms are dependent on the acoustics of a listening environment. P(C)s for frequency change in short tones were measured in different listening conditions. Two experiments were carried out to investigate the influence of room acoustics on the listener's perception of frequency change, and its implication for evaluating the acoustics of listening environments were examined and discussed. It was found that the temporal and spectral contents of reflections from room surfaces might be an important factor which influenced the listener's perception of frequency change in a reverberant sound field. This implicates that psychophysical approach by measuring listener's frequency change perception might be an useful tool for evaluating room acoustics. However, cares should be taken, since some individual differences were found to exist with respect to the direction of frequency change.

  • White uniformity is one of the important inspection factors determining the image quality of CRT screen. In the full white pattern, white uniformity means the degree of uniform distribution of white color across the whole screen. To elicit the sensitivity factors affecting the decision of the white uniformity quality, experiments in which participants were confronted with 6 evaluation points embedded in 3 measurement groups on a CRT screen were conducted to gather the psychophysical data that are the level of white uniformity subjects perceived and CA100 produced. These data were used to develop a modified CIE1976 equation for calculating white uniformity. Performance comparison between the original CIE1976 equation and the modified equation was conducted in terms of accuracy test and magnitude estimation. It was concluded the modified equation is more sensitive in the change of white uniformity, compared to the original CIE1976 equation.

  • Most studies in manual material handling (MMH) have paid more attention to single MMH activities-lifting, lowering, carrying, holding, pushing or pulling and have ignored combined activities. Also, many studies have been involved with two-handed MMH activities rather than to one-handed MMH activities. Very few studies are reported on the determination of workers' capacities for combinations of one-handed MMH activities (e.g. lifting a box, then carrying the box, and lowering the box). The objective of this study was to utilize the psychophysical approach to examine the combinations of lifting, carrying and lowering activities from a simulated industrial task involving one- handed and two-handed combined tasks and to develop mathematical models for combined tasks. Ten male students served as subjects for the study. The capacities that were determined as the maximum acceptable weight workloads for 1 hr work period for one-handed and two-handed combined tasks-lifting a box from floor to knuckle height, carrying the box for 4.3 m, and lowering the box form knuckle to floor height -were determined psychophysically under three frequencies: six handlings per minute, one handling per minute and one handling per five minutes. Combined MMH capacities models for one-handed tasks were developed. Te advantages and disadvantages of different models are discussed.
