Psychological Effects of Gamification on Young Learners: Focusing on a Serious Game for English Phoneme Discrimination (기능성게임을 활용한 게이미피케이션 영어 발음 학습이 초등학생의 정의적 영역에 미치는 영향)

  • This study investigated the psychological effects of using a serious game with young learners in the English classroom compared with those of a dictionary application. A tablet PC-based serious game was created for the training of English phoneme discrimination for Korean 6th graders, and its psychological effects were measured using a paper-based survey and face-to-face interviews. The overall results revealed that the serious game had more positive psychological effects on young learners than the dictionary app. These findings provide supporting empirical evidence for using serious games in English classrooms.

  • Many of recent studies have suggested various positive outcomes of serious games. However, relatively little emphasis has been placed on the roles of user-centered factors from a psychological perspective. One of the main goals of serious games is the change of the user's perception and behavior towards a positive direction. To achieve this goal, psychological factors should be applied to the user's playing process in serious games. Inspired by construal-level theory(CLT), we propose a CLT applied model (CLT in process-outcome serious games model) considering psychological factors on the player's decision making. The model will be useful not only to game developers or designers but also to game researchers as a valuable tool in persuasion and learning for serious game users.

Psycho-therapeutic Elements in Serious Game for Therapy (치료용 기능성 게임에서의 심리 치료적 요소)

  • The purpose of serious game for therapy is not to cure patients directly, but to have them cause psychological change, and get positive treatment will. In this study, we extracted 5 elements to be considered to design efficient serious games for psychological therapy through precedent data's analysis. For verification of the extracted elements, we intensively analyzed 2 elements. Those are 'Re-Mission' of which the effect was already proven, and 'SIMS2' which was designed to get the effect of treatment which patients who may experience difficulties in real-world can obtain in virtual space through previous experiences. As a result, material stability, reality, consistency with characters and self-determination of game progress are applied to all the analyzed games, But interactivity with reality is not applied. However, previous researches and validated questionnaire show that interactivity with reality is appropriate element. Consequently, the results of this study will be important materials in designing more efficient serious games for therapy.

  • The main goal of psychological serious game, which is called "SAVE ME, LOVE ME" made on the purpose of sound identity for teenagers is to reach inner awareness through the process of dilemma problem solving by the support of unconditional love. This action game is about how to deal with routine dilemma through the first person narration that teenagers are faced to. Its features are on the metaphorical use of 'A Prodigal Son' in the Bible, one of religious wisdom narratives to heal the psychological stresses which teenagers suffer from. This game is aimed at helping teenagers to build a positive and solid sense of self by fighting against growing threatens to teenager's solid sense of self, by defeating monsters, and by listening to the various stories which game characters tell.

  • This article aims to provide an overall picture of the applications of serious games for social changes. Our main goals are to show that game has great potential in delivering messages for social changes and to suggest guidelines for researchers and game developers in designing related games. We synthesized the key concepts of games for change that make them promising through literature reviews and analyzing game lists for social changes. Based on the theoretical investigations, we found that both role-taking and simulation of games are powerful ways not only to influence attitudes toward the other side but also to bring out empathy as psychological mechanism to draw attitude changes and altruistic actions associated with social or political issues.

  • This paper deals with the elderly serious game design which makes full use of the existing arcade game machine. This serious game is on the issue for its positive role recently. Serious arcade game for the elderly which is made up arcade platform-based combined contents manufacture technology has an element which is having a fun for building up physical and mental health. It also has a special objective which can prevent against senile dementia. Above-mentioned serious arcade game which has a special objective in both hardware part and software part is needed to study how to design. Accordingly, this paper presents how to make up special-purpose entertainment machine and contents development by biologic, social, and psychological researches and data about the elderly - main users.   • Recently, a Game Shut-down policy, partially limiting the time for the use of online game service, has been implemented in order to protect the youth from the excessive use of games by limiting their access to games in the late hours, based on the serious side effects of online games on the youth. However, the effectiveness of a Game Shut-down policy becomes a social issue. Thus, this study aims to investigate the alternative policies through the levels of the communications suggested by the theory of excellence, for the successful implementation of the policy. As a result of the study, the government and students, the recipient of those policies, need to strengthen their two-way communication in respect of the Game Shut-down policy, breaking from the existing views on the perception. The problem is that the current government's way of the communication for the Game Shut-down policy is one-way and it is aiming at achieving the objectives only. Thus, the communication in this manner will cause the side effect. 'the opportunistic violation of the system in the future', even if the students seemingly accept the system. Two-way communication will enhance the motivation for the voluntary acceptance of the system and lower the motivation for the opportunistic violation of the system. Thus, the government needs to strengthen two-way communication in the future.

A Study on the Relationship between Psychophysiological Experience and Negative Attitude in Smoking Serious Games (흡연 기능성 게임에서 심리생리학적 경험과 흡연의 부정적 태도와의 관계에 대한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between smoking attitudes and psychophysiological variables and to find out whether smoking cessation activities can be helpful for smoking cessation. We set up Negative Attitudes experience as a dependent variable. Several factors including Psychological Resistance, Psychological Distress and brainwave(Left brain ${\theta}$, Right Brain ${\theta}$) as a physiological indicator, which was expected to affect flow, were set up as independent variables to perform regression analysis. As a result, psychological resistance had negative influences on negative attitudes toward smoking in smoking simulation game and psychological distress had positive effect. And left brain ${\theta}$ had negative influences on negative attitudes toward smoking in smoking simulation game and right brain ${\theta}$ had positive effect.

Design and Implementation of Serious Games for Dementia Prevention and Brain Training (치매 예방과 두뇌 훈련을 위한 기능성 게임 설계 및 구현)

  • As the world's population ages, the incidence of dementia is increasing, and the psychological and economic burden on patients and their families is becoming a major social issue. As a result, various solutions are being sought to prevent dementia. In this study, we designed and implemented a serious game consisting of three types of mini-games aimed at effective dementia prevention, and improved the limitations of existing dementia prevention serious games as follows. Firstly, by implementing the game in a 3D environment, we were able to provide users with an enhanced play environment and experience. Secondly, by implementing three different mini-games to choose from, we were able to provide users with a variety of fun and experiences, as well as a variety of brain training. Third, by providing game content that can train not only spatial or visual cognitive abilities, but also visual and auditory cognitive abilities in combination, we have improved the efficacy of improving users' cognitive ability and memory. Fourth, we made it more accessible to users by supporting cross-platform play on PC or mobile devices.

Development and Analysis of Walking Game Using Controllers of Hand Buttons and Footboards (Title: Paldokangsan2) (손잡이/발판 컨트롤러를 이용한 걷기게임 '팔도강산2' 개발 및 효과성 연구)

  • We have developed a serious game for the elderly named 'Paldokangsan 2' in 2012 as a next version of 'Paldokangsan 1'. 'Paldokangsan 1' was a walking game for two people using controllers of armrests and footboards with PC. 'Paldokangsan 2' had additional purpose to assist cognitive, physical, and psychological functions of the elderly. Especially, walking activity was implemented in a way that a player walks around the old traditional market place in 1970's while remembering and choosing healthy food to buy. We also developed two mini games for the elderly and people with functional disability with the similar purpose as 'Paldokangsan2'. 219 older adults (age$$\geq_-$$ 65) recruited from Asan city community center participated in the study. The result showed that the game play exerted positive effects on memory, concentration and vitality of the elderly.
