  • The aim of the research was to investigate the herbage yield and some characteristics of three triticale cultivars (Beaguelita, Eronga and Juanillo) harvested at the boot and milky-waxy ripeness stages in 1993-94 and 1994-95. A randomized complete block design with three replications was used. Although there were no significant differences between the years and the cultivars, significant differences were found between the harvest stages and for most of the parameters studied superiority was observed for the late cutting (at milky-waxy ripeness). The highest crude protein (11.9%) and crude ash (9.4%) contents were obtained h m the boot stage, whereas the highest yields for green matter, dry matter, crude protein and crude ash were obtained h m the milky-waxy ripeness stage (34.94; 11.65; O.% and 0.92t/ha, respectively). Also, the dry matter content was higher at the late cutting (33.4%).

  • A field experiment was conducted in Chungju and Jungwon to evaluate growth characteristics, dry matter yield, protein yield and palatability of intercropping comparing with monocropping forage crops by the use of sorghum $\times$ sudangrass hybrid(S.S.H.), five forage soybeans and two forage cowpeas of superior to selected experiment of varieties. All eight treatment plots were replicated three times and cutting date were cut July 6 and September 9. 1. The mean leaf number of S.S.H. in intercropping T2 treatment showed high compared to T1 treatment in all treatment except for Hwangkeum treatment, but T3 treatment was lower than the other treatments. In the leaf number of soybean, Jangbaek treatment was the highest as 47 leaves per plant, cowpea treatments showed high above 50 leaves. The stem diameter of S.S.H. in Jangyeob treatment of T2 treatment was 9.6mm. In legume, cowpea of T3 treatment was high as ranged from 7.9mm to 8.2mm. In stem hardiness of S.S.H., TI treatment was the lower than the other treatments, while Jangbaek treatment of T2 treatment was the highest as $2.0kg/cm^2$. In legume crops, Jangbaek and Baekun treatment were the highest as $1.6kg/cm^2$, but T3 treatment was very low as $0.3~0.6kg/cm^2$. 2. In the mean leaf ratio of S.S.H., T1 treatment was higher than T2 and T3 treatment as 34.9%. In the legume crops, Togyu treatment was the highest as 40.9%. In the mean tiller number of S.S.H., T2 treatment showed high compared to TI treatment, but T3 treatment of was rather decrease than The tiller number of S.S.H. in Jangyeob treatment of T2 treatment was the highest as 4.6 per plant. The dead stubble of S.S.H. was high in order to T3>T1>T2 treatment>, T3 treatment was highly about 2 times compared to T2 treatment. 3. S.S.H. as T3 treatment was resistant to lodging, but T3 and T1 treatment showed highly lodging. In the legums, T3 treatment was resistant to lodging, but T2 treatment showed highly lodging. In the S.S.H. of T2 treatment, the leaf of summer depression was not occurrence, but T3 treatment was higher than the other treatments. 4. The palatability of domestic animals was high in order of T2>Tl>T3, especially Togyu treatment of T2 treatment was the highest at the holstein and deer, and Jangyeob treatment of T2 treatment was the highest in the Korean native cattle. But T3 treatment was lower than other treatments in the holstein and Korean native cattle. 5. Fresh yield of monocropping(T1) was the highest as 94, 650kg/ha, while dry matter yield in Jangyeob treatment of T2 treatment was the highest as 15, 575/ha But fresh yield and dry matter yield of T3 treatment were the lowest(P<0.05). 6. Protein yield in T2 treatment was high, especially Jangyeob treatment of T2 treatment was the highest as 1, 605.5 kg/ha T3 treatment was low in spite of high protein content, because dry matter yield was lower than the other treatments. In conclusion, among T1, T2 and T3 treatment, Jangyeob, Togyu and Baekun treatments of T2 treatment showed optimum varieties for intercropping with S.S.H., because they showed high Dry matter yield, protein yield and palatability.

  • Himalayan dock (Rumex nepalensis) was evaluated for forage value and antinutrients under three, five and seven weeks cutting intervals in the temperate environment. Dry matter (DM) content was measured for each cutting interval. Forage quality parameters such as Crude Protein (CP), Acid Detergent fiber (ADF), Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDF), Calcium (Ca) and Phosphorus (P) were analyzed. Plants with seven weeks cutting interval gave higher DM yield. CP and P content were significantly higher for three weeks cutting intervals. Average CP contents were 31.38 %, 30.73 % and 27.32 % and average P content 0.58 %, 0.52 % and 0.51 % for three, five and seven weeks cutting intervals, respectively. Ca content did not differ significantly between cutting intervals. The average Ca content were 0.91 %, 0.90 % and 90 %, for three, five and seven weeks cutting intervals, respectively. Tannin and mimosine contents were not significantly different between cutting intervals. Average tannin contents were 1.32 %, 1.27 % and 1.26 % and mimosine 0.38 %, 0.30 % and 0.28 % for three, five and seven weeks cutting intervals, respectively. The study concluded that R. nepalensis could be a potential source of protein for livestock. The study also suggests seven weeks harvesting interval to provide plants with high dry matter yield, high forage quality and very low levels of anti-nutrients.

  • This study investigated the effect of gum arabic (GA) combined with microbial transglutaminase (TG) on the functional properties of porcine myofibrillar protein (MP). As an indicator of functional property, heat-set gel and emulsion characteristics of MP treated with GA and/or TG were explored under varying NaCl concentrations (0.1-0.6 M). The GA improved thermal gelling ability of MP during thermal processing and after cooling, and concomitantly added TG assisted the formation of viscoelastic MP gel formation. Meanwhile, the addition of GA decreased cooking yield of MP gel at 0.6 M NaCl concentration, and the yield was further decreased by TG addition, mainly attributed by enhancement of protein-protein interactions. Emulsion characteristics indicated that GA had emulsifying ability and the addition of GA increased the emulsification activity index (EAI) of MP-stabilized emulsion. However, GA showed a negative effect on emulsion stability, particularly great drop in the emulsion stability index (ESI) was found in GA treatment at 0.6 M NaCl. Consequently, the results indicated that GA had a potential advantage to form a viscoelastic MP gel. For the practical aspect, the application of GA in meat processing had to be limited to the purposes of texture enhancer such as restructured products, but not low-salt products and emulsion-type meat products.

  • Twenty cows, by order of calving, were used in a completely randomized $2{\times}2$ factorial experiment. Variables were tow protein levels (14 and 18% crude protein) and concentration of fat (2 and 6% ether extract) in diets. Fat addition, via unprocessed whole sunflower seed, insured forage utilization in diets to meet energy requirement of cows. A total of 36 wks of lactation was subdivided into three 12-wk stages of lactation. Net energy lactation was set at 1.72, 1.57 and 1.42 Mcal/kg for each stage. Higher protein diets improved the efficiency of energy (FCM/net energy intake) which was particularly noted for diets containing high fat (85.7%). However, diets with low protein-high fat resulted in the lowest efficiency (67.7%). No difference in milk yield and butterfat was due to different levels and combinations of protein and lipid in diets. High protein diets depressed blood cholesterol and glucose compared to low-protein counterparts. Relative decline in milk production was slower for lower fat diets than for higher fat groups, especially mid to later stage of lactation. Results of this experiment tend to support our thesis on the synergistic effect of dietary protein and energy (lipid) upon efficiency of lactation.

  • Many proteins are expressed as an insoluble form during the production using Escherichia coli (E. coli) system. Although various methods are applied to increase their amounts of soluble expression, refolding is the only feasible way to obtain a target protein in some cases. Moreover, protein NMR experiments require 13C/15N-labeled proteins that can only be obtained from E. coli systems in terms of cost and technical difficulty. The finding of appropriate refolding conditions for a target protein is a time-consuming process. In particular, it is very difficult to determine whether the refolded protein has a native structure, when a target protein has no enzymatic activity and its refolding yield is very low. Here, we showed that 1-dimensional 1H-15N heteronuclear single quantum correlation (1D 1H-15N HSQC) experiment can be efficiently used to screen an optimal condition for the refolding of a target protein by monitoring both the structure and concentration of the refolded protein.

  • To select the highest yield soiling type forage, the yield performance of selected sorghum-sudangrass hybrids imported in 1992 have been evaluated at Chonnam region. The soiling type hybrids used in this experiment were TE-haygrazer, FP-5 Sudan, Sweet sioux V, and X -78050. Three different cuttings were done on July 6, August 6 and September 16 in 1992. This trial was arranged as a randomized complete block design with three replications under taken over a period 5 months from May to September in 1992. The results of this experiment were summarized as follows: The hybrids tested were not significantly different by plant height, leaf blade length, leaf blade width and stem diameter. In the first cutting, dry matter yield of FP-5 Sudan was the highest. In the second and third cutting, dry matter yield of Sweet sioux V was the highest among hybrids. The contents of crude protein, hemicellulose, relative feeding value(RFV), and amino acid were the highest by the first cutting, but NDF and ADF were shown the lowest.

  • Three experiments were carried out in which lactating Hereford ${\times}$ Friesian cattle walked up to ten kilometers a day for three periods of five days with two non-walking days between each walking period and in which the animals were fed different diets. Measurements were made of milk yield, milk constituent yields and concentrations and blood metabolite concentrations. Exercise caused significant reductions in milk yield and in the yields of lactose and milk protein. Milk fat yield was not reduced when animals were exercised. During exercise the concentrations of ${\beta}-OH$ butyrate and free fatty acids increased, whereas the concentrations of glucose, magnesium and inorganic phosphorus decreased. Diet influenced the effect of exercise on some blood metabolite concentrations.
