The stability issue of high temperature superconducting (HTS) racetrack coils is one of the most important factors for the development of large-scale rotating machines, such as ship propulsion motors and power generators. However, The stability and normal zone propagation characteristics of HTS racetrack pancake (RP) coils are not sufficient yet. In this study, quench tests for a GdBCO racetrack pancake coil were carried out under the condition of $LN_2$ at 77 K. Minimum quench energy and two-dimensional normal zone propagation velocities of the coil are also discussed. Normal zone propagation velocity in the coil's curved section is faster than in its straight section due to stress effects. The test results show that the protection of the straight section is of greater importance than that of the curved section when GdBCO racetrack pancake coils are applied to large-scale rotating machines.

This paper describes an optimal design of electric snow melting mat on vulnerable walk zone. In order to design an optimal electric power of snow melting mat and protect pedestrians with a nonslip mat, with considering protection of environmental pollution from abusing of the de-icing salts added calcium chloride. We analyzed nine snow melting mats through verification experiment in the condition of $-5^{\circ}C$, depending on three different kinds of heating material, electric heating cable, carbon heating film and carbon textile film. As a consequence, the $150W/m^2$ carbon textile film mat for snow melting was identified as an optimal power input and functional performance for pedestrians' safety on vulnerable walk zone. It is expected that the $150W/m^2$ carbon textile film mat would be useful to reduce slip down accidents by human error.

A safety assessment code, called SAGE (Safety Assessment Groundwater Evaluation), has been developed to describe post-closure radionuclide releases and potential radiological doses for low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste (LILW) disposal in an engineered vault facility in Korea. The conceptual model implemented in the code is focused on the release of radionuclide from a gradually degrading engineered barrier system to an underlying unsaturated zone, thence to a saturated groundwater zone. The radionuclide transport equations are solved by spatially discretizing the disposal system into a series of compartments. Mass transfer between compartments is by diffusion/dispersion and advection. In all compartments, radionuclides ate decayed either as a single-member chain or as multi-member chains. The biosphere is represented as a set of steady-state, radionuclide-specific pathway dose conversion factors that are multiplied by the appropriate release rate from the far field for each pathway. The code has the capability to treat input parameters either deterministically or probabilistically. Parameter input is achieved through a user-friendly Graphical User Interface. An application is presented, which is compared against safety assessment results from the other computer codes, to benchmark the reliability of system-level conceptual modeling of the code.
Rock mass is an important engineering material. In hydropower engineering, rock mass of bank slope controlled the stability of an arch dam. However, mechanical characteristics of the rock mass are not only affected by lithology, but also joints. On the basis of field geological survey, this paper built rock mass material containing parallel concentrated joints with different dip angle, different number under different stress conditions by PFC (Particle Flow Code) numerical simulation. Next, we analyzed mechanical property and fracture features of this rock mass. The following achievements have been obtained through this research. (1) When dip angle of joints is $15^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$, with the increase of joints number, peak strength of rock mass has not changed much. But when dip angle increase to $45^{\circ}$, especially increase to $60^{\circ}$ and $75^{\circ}$, peak strength of rock mass decreased obviously with the increase of joints number. (2) With the increase of confining stress, peak strengths of all rock mass have different degree of improvement, especially the rock mass with dip angle of $75^{\circ}$. (3) Under the condition of no confining stress, dip angle of joints is low and joint number is small, existence of joints has little influence on fracture mode of rock mass, but when joints number increase to 5, tensile deformation firstly happened at joints zone and further resulted in tension fracture of the whole rock mass. When dip angle of joints increases to $45^{\circ}$, fracture presented as shear along joints, and with increase of joints number, strength of rock mass is weakened caused by shear-tension fracture zone along joints. When dip angle of joints increases to $60^{\circ}$ and $75^{\circ}$, deformation and fracture model presented as tension fracture zone along concentrated joints. (4) Influence of increase of confining stress on fracture modes is to weaken joints' control function and to reduce the width of fracture zone. Furthermore, increase of confining stress translated deformation mode from tension to shear.
In Korea, countermeasures against earthquake disasters such as the seismic performance evaluation and/or retrofit scheme of buildings have not been fully performed since Korea had not been experienced many destructive earthquakes in the past. The main objective of this paper is to propose the basic seismic protection index (Es) suitable to Korean buildings based on the seismic evaluation of existing reinforced concrete buildings using modified strength index. This paper will focus on 1) the selection of weak and moderate earthquake waves representing Korean seismic zone, 2) the creation of the required strength ratio spectra by seismic response analysis, and 3) the proposition of the basic seismic protection index (Es) suitable to Korean seismic activity based on required strength ratio spectra
The distance relay technique used for transmission line protection operates overreach and underreach to the self protection region because the power system becomes complex and fault conditions are different. To solve these problems, this paper describes new technique to set the reliable self protection lesion. The trip region of the quadrilateral distance relay is set by training of multi layer recurrent elman network. The proposed network is able to reach the trip zone for the fault impedance, fault initial angle and source impedance variance correctly.
The corrosion rate, behavior of corrosion fatigue and characteristic of cathodic protection for SB41 were investigated by corrosion and corrosion control tests in seawater at laboratory and coast. The main result obtained are as the following; 1) The corrosion rate of base metal (BM) is about 28-37 mg/dm super(2) day in seawater of coast. 2) The correlation between the stress intensity factor range $\Delta$K and crack propagation rate da/dN for weldment follows paris' rule in seawater : da/dN=C($\Delta$K) super(m) where m is the slope of the correlation, and is 2.02 for BM and 1.75 for heat affected zone (HAZ) respectively. 3) The corrosion sensitivity of HAZ is more sensitive than that of BM under the low region of $\Delta$K. 4) With increase of bared surace area of cathode, cathodic protection potential is increased sharply.
This paper analyzed catenary impedance characteristics of relays installed in substation and sectioning post to protect power feeding circuit in the extended power feeding conditions. For this, we modelled AT feeding system using PSCAD/EMTDC and calculated catenary impedance. The relay installed in substation calculated catenary impedance of the extended power feeding area adding catenary impedance of self protection zone. But, the relay installed in sectioning post calculated catenary impedance of the only protection area. Therefore, we confirmed that the more reliable protection way can be utilized using the relay installed in sectioning post.
The suspension bridge between Myodo and Gwangyang is located in the main navigation channel to Gwangyang Harbor. So, there is need for the collision protection against large vessels. As ship collision protection, artificial island with concrete block quay wall is planned. The risk analysis and non-linear numerical analysis are introduced to consider the ship collision effects. In the Gwangyang bay area, there are some different sedimental conditions in clayey stratums. For a desirable design, we classify into four zones and 2 layers in each zone, and then determine suitable soil properties considering these zones. As a ground improvement under artificial island, DCM and SCP methods are Planned.
