  • This paper proposes the new adaptive protection algorithm for inverse-time overcurrent relays (OCRs) to ensure their proper operating time and protective coordination. The application of the proposed algorithm requires digital protection relays with microcontroller and memory. The operating parameters of digital OCRs are adjusted based on the available data whenever system conditions (system with distributed generation (DG)) vary. Moreover, it can reduce the calculation time required to determine the operating parameters for achieving its purpose. To verify its effectiveness, several case studies are performed in time-domain simulation. The results show that the proposed adaptive protection algorithm can keep the proper operating time and provide the protective coordination time interval with fast response.

  • For the purpose of designing and applying optimum surge protection, one of the essential points is to take into account the energy coordination between cascaded surge protective devices(SPDs) and it is important to obtain an acceptable sharing of the energy stress between two cascaded SPDs. In this paper, in case of two voltage-limiting SPDs connected in parallel, the amount of splitting impulse current and energy that flow through each SPDs is investigated as a function of the protective distance. As a result, the energetic coordination between cascaded SPDs is strongly dependent on the voltage protection level of SPDs and the protective distance. It was confirmed that the sharing of the energy between two cascaded SPDs and the limited voltage levels are appropriate when the voltage protection levels of both upstream and downstream SPDs are the same.

  • In this paper, the formulation of the protection ratio based upon a composite fade margin and availability is newly presented for the detailed planning of frequency coordination in the microwave relay system network, and computed results for co-channel and adjacent channel protection ratios are illustrated over an actual system with 6.2 GHz. It is shown that the protection ratio to assure a quality of service can be expressed in terms of the composite fade margin, noise-to-interference ratio, net filter discrimination, and system parameters. In addition, the net filter discrimination, depending upon the transmitter spectrum mask and the overall receiver filter characteristic, has been examined to investigate the effect of the adjacent channel protection ratio caused by the adjacent channel interference. Regarding simulated results for 6.2 GHz, 60 km, 64-QAM, and N/I=6 dB at the bit error rate of $10^{-6}$, composite fade margin and co-channel protection ratio yield 25.14 and 50.3 dB, respectively. Also, the net filter discrimination of 26.5 dB and the adjacent channel protection ratio of 23.8 dB are obtained at the first adjacent channel of 30 MHz. The proposed method provides some merits in view of a comprehensive and practical application with more detailed and various system parameters needed to access the criteria for making the proper frequency coordination.

  • After North American wide area black out on August 14, 2003, various studies have been conducted to find out the reason of the disaster. One of main reasons was misoperation of generator protection system. Since then, protective coordination between generator protection system and excitation system controls has been hot issue among electrical engineers. Among various generator protection relays, in this paper, we focused on generator overvoltage and overexcitation relay, which protect the over-flux condition of the generator. Thus, at first, we modeled the generator overvoltage, overexcitation relay and detailed power system including excitation system, governor and etc., based on actual field data. And then, we reviewed the protective coordination of generator overvoltage and overexcitation relay using electromagnetic transient program. In addition, we discussed the protective coordination method for redundant protection relays in both automatic voltage regulator and generator side.

  • A safe and reliable protection system in distribution networks, specifically, those hosting distribution generation units, needs a robust over-current protection scheme. To avoid unintentional DG disconnection during fault conditions, a protection system should operate quickly and selectively. Therefore, to achieve this aim, satisfying coordination constraints are important for any protection scheme in distribution networks; these pose a challenging task in interconnected and large-scale networks. In this paper, a new coordination strategy, based on the same non-standard time-current curve for all relays, in order to find optimal coordination of directional over-current relays, is proposed. The main aim is to reduce violations, especially miscoordination between pair relays. Besides this, the overall time of operation of relays during primary and backup operations should be minimized concurrently. This work is being tackled based on genetic algorithms and motivated by the heuristic algorithm. For the numerical analysis, to show the superiority of this coordination strategy, the IEEE 30-bus test system, with a mesh structure and supplemented with distributed generation, is put under extensive simulations, and the obtained results are discussed in depth.

  • KEPCO's plan is undergoing a trial operation to replace the open-loop section with ring main units configuration where underground distribution lines are installed, by linking the multi-way circuit breakers auto (MCA) on the power side of each pad-mounted transformer. However, ring main units application mentioned above may cause the ripple effects, when implementing the configuration without a study of protection coordination. Because ring main units with classical pre-set protection devices contribution in fault condition didn't consider yet. For the reliable ring main units operation, it is necessary to resolve several protection issues such as the protection coordination with substation side, prevention of the transformer inrush current. These issues can radically deteriorate the distribution system reliability Hence, it is essential to design proper protection coordination to reduce these types of problems. This paper presents a scheme of ring main units' configuration and MCA's settings of time-current curves to preserve the performance of protection coordination among the switchgears considering constraints, e.g. prevention of the ripple effects (on the branch section when a transformer failure occurs and the mainline when a branch line failure occurs). It was confirmed that the propagation of the failure for each interrupter segment could be minimized by applying the proposed TCC and the interrupter settings for the MCAs (branch, transformer). Further, it was verified that the undetected area of the distribution automation system (DAS) could be supplemented by having the MCA configurated ring main units operate first, instead of the internal protection equipment in the transformer such as the fuse, STP when a transformer failure occurs.

  • The DASPRO (Protection Coordination Program for DAS) is one of the application programs for Distribution Automation System (DAS) of the KEPCO. Application programs developed by KEPCO provide optimal operation in distribution network. The DASPRO includes diverse functions to operate network as construction of database using existing information. creation of diagram for protection coordination. calculation of fault current. evaluation network. power quality monitoring, etc. The DASPRO can examine validity of setting values for protective devices by comparing to T-C curves. Unless the protection coordination is correct, the most suitable setting value for protection devices are displayed on the screen. In this paper, I will introduce the contents of the DASPRO.

  • In this paper, we propose protective coordination and automatic setting method using agents for distribution system with loop. The proposed protection scheme adopts an agent technology assuming communication among protection agents and auto-switch agents. Having exchanged fault-related information with each other, protection agents and auto-switch agents perform the primary and backup protection and fault section isolation, respectively. this proposed scheme using agents for distribution system with loop is implemented by matlab. Because of the various configuration of distribution system, It's difficult to find cooperative agents for each agent. This paper develops a program to automatically set the cooperative route for the agents.
