A total of 2,510 police personnel aged 20-59 were examined to determine the prosthodontic demands. The results were as follows. 1. Prosthodontic demands increase with aging. 2. Periodontic problem is the major cause of the prosthodontic needs in old personnel. 3. Trauma is the more popular cause of the prosthodontic need than periodontal problem in policeman. 4. The major cause of the untreatment is the lacks of time. 5. The younger persons have more fear of dental treatment. 6. Prostodontic demands show declining trends.
Outcome of esthetic ceramic restorations are affected by tooth size, gingival contour, occlusal relationship, etc. For this reason, demand of orthodontic treatment before esthetic ceramic restoration is increasing. If a Bolton ratio discrepancy, a problem of the maxillary incisor's vertical position, a problem of inclination of anterior teeth, a pathogenic occlusion is existed, a pre-prosthodontic orthodontics should be accomplished. These problems can be satisfactory only after the prosthetic treatment is performed after orthodontic treatment. When orthodontic treatment is given, it should be treated with the following principle. 1. Treat it in the direction of functioning occlusion. 2. Keep the patient's stable occlusal scheme. 3. Treat the teeth by considering the average tooth size and Bolton ratio. Ortho-Prostho combined treatment with optimal treatment plan can lead a patient's function, esthetics, and long-term stability.

Diastema is thought to be a problem related to aesthetics, pronunciation, or malocclusion. Due to its extent and patient conditions, orthodontic treatment, prosthodontic treatment, and conservative direct resin restoration are the treatment options for diastema closure. Additional factors need to be considered when deciding on the most appropriate treatment of diastema, particularly for patients with cerebral palsy. A 13-year-old girl visited the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at Yonsei University Dental Hospital with a chief complaint of the large gap between her upper front teeth. After clinical and radiographic examinations, midline diastema of 4.5 mm, protrusive maxilla incisors, congenital missing teeth, retained primary teeth, etc. were identified. Prosthodontic treatment with intentional root canal treatment was not appropriate because of the patient's age. Dental spaces can be closed effectively via orthodontic appliances. However, additional prosthodontic and restorative intervention is unavoidable, which incurs significant costs and requires more time. Instead of orthodontic and prosthodontic treatment, direct resin restoration can address the chief complaint; these restorations are reversible, less harmful to other oral structure and teeth, relatively easy to apply, less expensive than other treatments, and require shorter office visits. Midline diastema can be treated in several ways. For diastema closure in patients with cerebral palsy, conservative resin restorations are a short, simple, and appropriate treatment compared with orthodontic or prosthodontic treatments.

Purpose: In many cases, the erroneous placement of a dental implant brings about undesirable results. Here, the effect of dental implant placement on the success of the final prosthesis was evaluated from the point of view of the prosthodontist. Materials and Methods: All surgical operations were performed by the same oral surgeon with the same surgical protocol and all prosthodontic procedures were performed by the same prosthodontist. The problems faced by the prosthodontist, their causes, and their effect on prosthesis success were identified. The success of the final prostheses was evaluated by the same prosthodontist. Results: Only 53% (238 implants in 105 patients) of dental implants were not associated with prosthodontic problems. Multiple implant placement (more than three implants) was associated more frequently with prosthodontic problems. Conclusions: The data indicate that the satisfactory construction of a prosthesis is highly dependent on the placement of the dental implant in the best possible position. It is strongly recommended that the oral surgeon and the prosthodontist engage in pre-operative discussions to establish a top-down treatment plan, as this will improve implant placement and ultimately the success of the prosthesis.
Gradual tooth wear is a natural process of aging, but pathological wear over physiologic ranges leads to functional and esthetic problems. The loss of posterior support may cause pathological wear of anterior teeth, which results in reduction of vertical dimension and disharmony of occlusal plane. To solve this problem, determination of proper vertical dimension considering centric relation is necessary. This case report presented 71-year-old male, who had the severe wear of lower anterior teeth due to loss of posterior support. By meticulous evaluation, a full mouth rehabilitation with elevation of vertical dimension was planned. After 8 months of follow-up, stable occlusal scheme is maintained and patient was satisfied with clinical outcome functionally and esthetically.
State of problem: Zirconia all-ceramic restoration fabricated with CAM system is on an increasing trend in dentistry. However, evaluation of the marginal and internal fits of zirconia bridge seldomly have been reported. Purpose: This study was to evaluate the at of margin and internal surface in posterior 3-unit zirconia bridge framework fabricated with CAM system(DeguDent, Germany). Material and Method: Preparations of secondary premolar and secondary molar on artificial resin model were performed for fabrication of 3-unit posterior bridge framework. Fits of 5 zirconia bridge framework were compared with 5 precious ceramo-metal alloy framework(V-GnathosPlus, Metalor, Switzerland), and prepared margins were designed to chamfer and shoulder finishing line. Each framework was cemented to epoxy resin model with reinforced glass ionomer(FujiCEM, GC Co., Japan), embedded in acrylic resin and sectioned in two planes, mesio-distal and buccolingual. Samples were divided into six pieces by sectioning and had two pieces of each surface(i.e mesial, distal, buccal and lingual surface) per abutment, so there were eight measuring points in each abutment. External gap was measured at the margin and internal gaps were measured at the margin, axial and occlusal surface. Gaps were observed under the measuring microscope(Compact measuring microscope STM5; Olympus, Japan) at a magnification of $\times100$. T-test were used to determine the statistic significance of the different gaps between zirconia and metal framework. Results and Conclusion: 1. External and internal marginal gaps of zirconia and metal framework were in clinically acceptable range. External marginal gaps were not different significantly between zirconia$(81.9{\mu}m)$ and metal $(81.3{\mu}m)$ framework and internal marginal gaps of zirconia $(44.6{\mu}m)$ were smaller than those of metal framework $(58.6{\mu}m)$. 2. Internal axial gaps of zirconia framework$(96.7{\mu}m)$ were larger than those of metal frame-work$(78.1{\mu}m)$ significantly and adversely, internal occlusal gaps of zirconia frame-work$(89.4{\mu}m)$ were smaller than those of metal framework $(104.9{\mu}m)$ significantly. 3. There were no significant differences in external and internal marginal gaps between chamfer and shoulder finish line when zirconia frameworks were fabricated.
Statement of problem: In spite of increasing dental treatment for the disabled, there was no collected data on prosthodontic treatment status and dentists' perceptions in Korea. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to research the dentists' perceptions about current prosthodontic treatment status for the disabled in Korea and to suggest public health policies for the disabled. Material and methods: Total of 68 dentists who have regularly treated the disabled were asked to fill questionnaires regarding prosthodontic treatment for the disabled. Results: 1. 45.6% of dentists felt the necessity of an esthetic prosthesis for the disabled. However, 54.3% of dentists reported the improvement of access to implant, orthodontic and esthetic treatment is needed. 2. Most (79.4%) of the dentists thought it is imperative for the government to support the disabled to maintain adequate oral health by providing at least 50% of charge in their prosthesis. Conclusion: Through this research, 97.1% of dentists answered that the current prosthodontic treatment status for the disabled in Korea is poor. This indicated the necessity of the financial support from the government for the disabled.
Statement of problem: The titanium has advantages of a high biocompatibility, a corrosion resistence, low density, and cheep price, so it is focused as a substituted alloy But it is quite difficult to cast with the tranditional method due to the high melting point, reacivity with element at, elevated temperature. By using the CAD-CAM system for the crown construction, it is possible to reduce the errors while proceeding the wax-up, investing, and casting procedure Purpose: The purposes of this study were to measure the marginal adaptation of the casting titanium coping and machine-milled titanium coping according to the casting methods and the marginal configurations. Material and method: The marginal configurations were used chamfer shoulder, and beveled shoulder. The total 30 copings were used, and these are divided into 6 groups according to the manufacturing method and marginal configuration. The gap between margin of the model and the restoration was measured with 3-dimensional measuring microscope. Results: The following results were obtained; 1. casting gold coping demonstrated the best marginal seal, followed by casting titanium coping finally machine-milled titanium copings. 2. In casting titanium coping, chamfer demonstrated the best marginal seal, followed by shoulder and beveled shoulder. There was no significantly difference in shoulder and beveled shoulder. But all margin form has clinically acceptable 3. In machine-milled titanium copings, chamfer demonstrated the best marginal seal, followed by shoulder and beveled shoulder. Beveled shoulder show large and uneven marginal gap Conclusions: Above result revealed that marginal adaptation of the titanim coping is avail able in the clinical range, it can be used as an alternative metal and it is prefered especially in chamfer or shoulder margin during implant superstructure fabrication. But there should be more research on machine-milled titanium in order to use it in the clinics.
This study was perfomed to investigate the prosthodontic and periodontal status of the abutment teeth in distally extending bridges(DEBs) (78 cases) and removable partial dentures(RPDs) (43 cases) for 122 patients (55 males and 57 females) visiting department of Periodontology, Seoul National University Hospital. The average wearing periods were 67.8 months for DEBs and 66.4 months for RPDs. 38.4% of the patients in DEBs and 35.9% in RPDs complainted of chewing discomfort and 22.6% and 24.4% were not chewing on the prosthodontically - treated sides, respectively. In DEBs, when the restoration for 2nd molar supported by 1st molar & 2nd premolar was grouped to type 1, 1st molar supported by 1st & 2nd premolars was type 2, and 1st & 2nd molars supported by 1st & 2nd premolars was type 3, there was a significant differences only in the tooth mobility score among clinical parameters (type 2>type 1>type 3). In RPDs, when bilateral free-end case was grouped to type 1, and unilateral case was type 2, there was a significant difference in the Gingival index (type 1>type 2). In DEBs, 62.8% of restoration were overcontoured, 72% had interproximal space closures, 30.5% overextended pontics and 86.6% overhanging margins. In RPDs, 24.4% of the restorations were overcontoured, 45.5% had interproxinal space closures and 58.3% overhanging margins. From these results of this study, periodontal problems caused by prosthodontic defects were considered to be contributing factors in chewing discomfort.
