Technology standards have gained importance as global market becomes more competitive. Since a technology acknowledged as a standard brings significant benefits to the developer firm, firms in the IT industry tend to pursue standardization for the technology, being it proprietary or open. However, the paths or strategic implications are seldom discussed in academia. Therefore, our study uses iPhone of Apple, one of the proprietary standards successes, to further understand corporate strategies over two standard choices. Our case study suggests that iPhone's entry timing was optimal for creating a new mobile environment. Design excellence and user-friendly interface increased networking effects and switching costs among consumers. Apple developed independent mobile operating system (iOS) through improvement on the existing operating system. During the process, Apple chose proprietary standard and, by installing the same UX on its sibling products such as iPod Touch or iPad, overcame the subsequent problems that might arise from the limited use of iOS. Based on the capability of concurrently developing both hardware and software, Apple connected operating system, machine, and contents, which deems to contribute to its proprietary standards success. We argue that this strategy should be considered for firms which plan proprietary standard strategy.

본 논문은 오픈소스소프트웨어와 사적독점 소프트웨어를 비교하고 이를 바탕으로, 오픈소스소프트웨어가 독창적으로 가치를 창출할 수 있는 비즈니스 모델을 제안하는데 목적이 있다. 우리가 제안하는 오프소스소프트웨어의 새로운 비즈니스 모델은 맞춤형 소프트웨어를 제공하는 것이다. 이는 사적독점소프트웨어가 소프트웨어 산업에 미치는 좋지 않은 영향인 고착화와 거래비용을 소프트웨어 유통을 통해 제거할 수 있는 비즈니스 모형이다. 맞춤형 소프트웨어는 라이센스 판매 위주로 수익을 창출해 온 방식을 대신해 가치사슬 상의 관련 산업을 통해 가치를 창출함으로써 효율적인 소프트웨어 시장을 구축한다. 소프트웨어의 가치를 증대할 수 있도록 유통시킴으로써 라이센스 판매가 아니더라도 산업 전반의 가치를 높여서 시장의 성장과 수익을 도모할 수 있다.

The market for commercial open source software (OSS) has been rapidly growing with the proliferation of OSS. One way to commercialize OSS is the support model, which has been adopted by leading OSS firms such as Red Hat and JBoss. Despite the growing interest in OSS commercialization, little research has provided OSS support providers with a pricing guideline. In this paper, we examine the optimal pricing strategies for OSS support providers. Our benchmark is a monopoly case in which we investigate a startup software vendor's incentive to choose the OSS support regime over the proprietary one. Then we extend the model to a duopoly case in which OSS under the support regime competes against proprietary software. We characterize the conditions under which the OSS support model is viable under competition. We believe that our results offer insights to the OSS vendors who consider commercializing their OSS with a support model.

Purpose - The development and implementation of OSS (Open Source Software) led to a dramatic change in corporate IT infrastructure, from system server to smart phone, because the performance, reliability, and security functions of OSS are comparable to those of commercial software. Today, OSS has become an indispensable tool to cope with the competitive business environment and the constantly-evolving IT environment. However, the use of OSS is insufficient in small and medium-sized companies and software houses. This study examines the need for OSS Intermediaries in the Software Distribution Channel. It is expected that the role of the OSS Intermediary will be reduced with the improvement of the distribution process. The purpose of this research is to prove that OSS Intermediaries increase the efficiency of the software distribution market. Research design, Data, and Methodology - This study presents the analysis of data gathered online to determine the extent of the impact of the intermediaries on the OSS market. Data was collected using an online survey, conducted by building a personal search robot (web crawler). The survey period lasted 9 days during which a total of 233,021 data points were gathered from sourceforge.net and Apple's App store, the two most popular software intermediaries in the world. The data collected was analyzed using Google's Motion Chart. Results - The study found that, beginning 2006, the production of OSS in the Sourceforge.net increased rapidly across the board, but in the second half of 2009, it dropped sharply. There are many events that can explain this causality; however, we found an appropriate event to explain the effect. It was seen that during the same period of time, the monthly production of OSS in the App store was increasing quickly. The App store showed a contrasting trend to software production. Our follow-up analysis suggests that appropriate intermediaries like App store can enlarge the OSS market. The increase was caused by the appearance of B2C software intermediaries like App store. The results imply that OSS intermediaries can accelerate OSS software distribution, while development of a better online market is critical for corporate users. Conclusion - In this study, we analyzed 233,021 data points on the online software marketplace at Sourceforge.net. It indicates that OSS Intermediaries are needed in the software distribution market for its vitality. It is also critical that OSS intermediaries should satisfy certain qualifications to play a key role as market makers. This study has several interesting implications. One implication of this research is that the OSS intermediary should make an effort to create a complementary relationship between OSS and Proprietary Software. The second implication is that the OSS intermediary must possess a business model that shares the benefits with all the participants (developer, intermediary, and users).The third implication is that the intermediary provides an OSS of high quality like proprietary software with a high level of complexity. Thus, it is worthwhile to examine this study, which proves that the open source software intermediaries are essential in the software distribution channel.

In this paper, for the systematic software evaluation and selection objective, we first discussed the systems software which is distinctly different from applications oriented software in source, concept and use. We suggested the systematic procedures for the effective software evaluation and selection by analyzing categories of commercially available proprietary software, sources of information for software selection, request for information, request for proposal, user surveys as an aid to evaluation and evaluation of responses to the RFP.

User satisfaction has always been important in the success of software, regardless of whether it is closed and proprietary or open source software (OSS). OSS users are geographically distributed and include technical as well as novice users. However, it is generally believed that if OSS was more usable, its popularity would increase tremendously. Hence, users and their requirements need to be addressed in the priorities of an OSS environment. Online public forums are a major medium of communication for the OSS community. The research model of this work studies the relationship between user requirements in open source software and online public forums. To conduct this research, we used a dataset consisting of 100 open source software projects in different categories. The results show that online forums play a significant role in identifying user requirements and addressing their requests in open source software.

Due to the improvement of PC performance and windows-based OS, PC-based control system is gradually taking over industrial control in the industry site, replacing the closed proprietary syste. PC-based system gives the avantages of ease-of-use, cost-effectiveness, simplicity of maintenace and the flexibility to design I/O system using standard technology. While there are many real time software soltions, most of hardware solutions are closed, vendor-depednent, proprietary systems for large scale plants. In this paper, we suggest the method to configure PC-based I/O system based on standard technology which gives the avantages to use off-the-shelf products for system integration.

본 연구는 선박과 주위상태를 기지국에서 실시간으로 모니터링하고 기록하는 선박 관리 시스템에 대한 연구이다. 독점적인 시스템 메세지가 통신에 중개되도록 설계되어 있다. 디바이스 표준에 의하여 특정시스템 메시지가 규격화되고, 시스템에 부착되어진 각 통신장치에 특정화되도록 설계하였다. 또한 새로운 구성으로 관리자에 의해 원격으로 결정될 수 있는 기지국에 메시지를 선박상태를 업데이트하는 방법을 결정하도록 설계하였다.

Most of enterprises use various applications for serving their routine business. One of most widespread applications is the enterprise resource planning (ERP). This paper focuses on open source ERP software and aims to find out what benefits it can bring to small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) comparing to proprietary ERP. To serve the purpose, this paper introduces the successful adoption of open source ERP software through the case study of small Vietnamese firm. The results of this paper show the advantage of open source ERP software and the possibility of adoption for SME.

Technology of GIS evolved as a means of assembling and analyzing diverse spatial data. Many systems have been developed, and almost of systems are proprietary. There is a lots of lack of interoperability and reusability between them. This paper describes the development of Open GIS component software. The developing system have an end in view of GIS tool software which is interoperable and reusable. To increase the interoperability and reusability, the system is based on the OGC(Open GIS Consortium)'s Open GIS Simple Features Specification for OLE/COM. The OGC's specification is announced to increasing the full interoperability of various geospatial data and geoprocessing resources. With the Open specification, component based software ensures the reusability. We implement three kinds of component: Geometry component, Spatial Reference System Component, and MapBase Component. The first two components are compatible to the OGC's specification and the third one is designed to GIS tool software for variant GIS applications. The Open GIS component software system is developed on object-oriented computing environment, ATL/COM and Visual C++. As we made application programs using Visual Basic, the advantages of component based Open GIS software was proved.
