  • CTD castings and current observations are taken in June, July and October, 1997 and May and July, 1998 to investigate the effect of the Keum River dyke on the structure of physical properties and the type of the Keum River estuary. Tide and tidal current relation shows that the ebbing is longer than the flooding by 1.5 hours with the early current reversing before high tide. In the rainy season (May to July), frequent large fresh water discharge during the ebbing from the dyke changes vertical salinity difference and time variation of salinity greatly near the head of the estuary, where salinity becomes lower than 2‰ in summer fresh water flooding. Halocline developed by the fresh water discharge makes two-layer structure, of which strength and depth increase in the low tide. The relationship between tide phase and surface salinity variation shows the phase lag of 2.5 hours near the head of the estuary but the standing wave relation down the estuary. This phase lag implies that a low salinity water diluted by the fresh water discharge for 2-3 hours in the ebb period moves with tidal excursion. In the dry season, vertical salinity difference reduces significantly. We calculate stratification and circulation parameters using the observed salinity structure, surface current and fresh water discharge. The Keum River estuary shows a partially mixed type, changing the stratification parameter from the rainy to the dry season. Mean flows of observed tidal current at lower and upper layer are landward and seaward, which are consistent with the circulation of a partially mixed estuary. Based upon the estuary type and circulation we suggest that the suspended materials will move toward the upstream due to low-layer mean flow and then the Keum River estuary will be a deposit environment.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify differences of perceptions for gardens and parks between experts and the general public concerning several aspects including scope, scale, publicity, artistic and scientific nature, main materials, practicality and aesthetics, executive and management systems as well as legal understanding of garden and park. The properties of garden and park were derived through literature research, and the concept, similarity, and difference of gardens and the parks were recognized by the experts and the public viewpoint was clarified by questionnaire. As for the difference in the scope of the gardens and the parks, the expert group recognized it more widely than the general public. In general, the space recognized as a garden was the rooftop green space, and urban forests were recognized as a park. In addition, the general public recognized urban forests as gardens the same as they recognized parks, and the distinction was unclear. In the expert group, the perception that gardens were small and the parks were large was more prevalent. It was generally recognized that gardens were private spaces and the parks were public spaces. In the expert group, the gardens were more personal and the parks were more apparent to the public. In the general population, functional and scientific aspects rather than artistic creativity in both gardens and parks. In addition, both the general public and experts found that parks are more complex than gardens. The garden was centered on plant material, and the park was recognized as a center where the sculptural facilities were centered, or the plant material and the sculptural facilities were properly balanced. To the experts the view of the gardens was positive. Expert groups emphasized the aesthetics of the garden, and the parks were more practical, and the general population showed similar perceptions of utility and aesthetics when comparing gardens and parks. In addition, the utility of gardens in the general publics is more emphasized than the aesthetics of the park. Regarding the executive system the park was recognized as the public sector, and the difference was larger in the expert group. As for the management system, both experts and the general public perceive the management of the park or the garden to be carried out by the supporting organization, and it is necessary to discuss the diversification of the management subject. It is found that there is a certain difference in recognition with the mixture of concepts, and there is still a big difference in legal system and perception.

  • Lentinuls edodes has been used for traditional food and medicine around Asia, and a variety of biological effects have been reported. In this study, L. edodes water extract (LWE) was investigated for its anti-photodamage effect in HaCaT keratinocytes. To perform the necessary assays, L. edodes was extracted with distilled water for 8 hr at 40℃ in an extract tank. Anti-photodamage activity was assessed using a scratch wound healing assay, cell proliferation, and a reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging test and by measuring the mRNA and protein expression levels of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and type I procollagen. MMPs and collagen expression are major markers of UV-induced photodamage in skin. Prior to photodamage analysis, the total polyphenol and β-glucan contents of the LWE were evaluated and found to be 4.64 mg GAE/g DW and 165.96 mg/g, respectively. Treatment with LWE induced cell migration and cell proliferation in UV-irradiated HaCaT cells, and LWE effectively scavenged the ROS induced by H2O2 and UVB irradiation in HaCaT cells. UVB irradiation induced ROS generation and led to increased production of MMP-1 and MMP-9 and to decreased collagen production in human keratinocytes. Treatment with LWE upregulated the expression levels of MMP-1, MMP-9, and type I procollagen in UVB-irradiated HaCaT cells. This study suggests that LWE could be used to develop cosmetic materials with anti-photodamage effects.

  • AlN thin films have been fabricated by using RF magnetron sputtering method and their crystal orientations, microstructures and piezoelectric properties have been investigated with variation of the $Ar/N_2$ gas ratio and the substrate temperature. Particularly, when the $Ar/N_2$ gas ratio and the substrate temperature are 10/10 (sccm) and $400^{\circ}C$, respectively, the AlN thin film exhibits the highest (002) orientation. The result of the surface roughness measurement by using AFM shows that the surface roughness becomes better as the partial pressure of $N_2$ increases at the substrate temperature of $400^{\circ}C$ and it becomes the smallest value of 2.1 nm when $Ar/N_2$ is 0/20 (sccm). The AFM measurement also shows that when $Ar/N_2$ is 10/10 (sccm) shows that surface roughness becomes better as the substrate temperature increases from room temperature up to $300^{\circ}C$ and then it becomes worse as the substrate temperature goes up from $300^{\circ}C$. At the substrate temperature of $300^{\circ}C$ and $Ar/N_2$=10/10 (sccm), the surface roughness is 3.036 nm. The piezoelectric constant ($d_{33}$) of AlN thin film is measured by Pneumatic probe method. The measurement shows that the AlN thin film with the highest (002) orientation, fabricated at $Ar/N_2$=10/10 (sccm) and the substrate temperature of $400^{\circ}C$, has the best Piezoelectric constant ($d_{33}$) of 6.01 pC/N.

  • The stone Buddhas and Shrine of Unjusa temple (Korea Treasure No. 797) in Hwasun formed in Koryo Dynasty are unique style which the Buddha faces each other the back parts of south and north within the stone Shrine. The stone Buddhas and Shrine are highly evaluated in historical, artistic and academic respects. But, the stone properties have been exposed in the open system various aspects of degradations weathered for a long time without specific protective facilities. The rock materials of the stone Buddhas and Shrine are about 47 blocks, and total press load is about 56.6 metric ton. The host rocks composed mainly of white grey hyaline lithic tuff and rhyolitic tuff breccia. In addition, biotite granite used as part during the restoration works. The chemical index of alteration for host tuffaceous rocks and the replacement granites range from 52.1 to 59.4 and 50.0 to 51.0, respectively. Weathering types for the stone Buddhas and Shrine were largely divided with physical, chemical and biological weathering to make a synthetic deterioration map according to aspects of damage, and estimate share as compared with surface area. Whole deterioration degrees are represented that physical weathering appeared exfoliation. Chemical weathering is black coloration and biological weathering of grey lichen, which show each lighly deterioration degrees. According to deterioration degree by direction of stone Buddhas and Shrine, physical weathering mostly appeared by 39.1% on the sorthern part, and chemical weathering is 61.2% high share on the western part. Biological weathering showed 38.3% the largest distribution on the southern part. Therefore, it is necessary to try hardening for the parts with serious cracks or exfoliations, remove secondary contaminants and organisms through regular cleaning. Also necessary to make a plan to remove moisture of the ground which causes weathering, and estimate that need established and scientific processing through clinical demonstration of conservation plan that chooses suitable treatment.

  • Since the celadons excavated from the Son-gok 2-ri 4th kiln site are located in the Beopcheon temple site and at close range, the similarity to the celadons excavated from the Beopcheon temple site is being raised. Thus, this study examined the correlation using a natural-scientific method. In this study, historical ceramic properties of total 19 celadons were examined and they were scientifically analyzed. First of all, according to the scientific analysis, chemical compositions of celadon clay showed a dispersed distribution at RO2 3.79-7.77mole and RO+R2O 0.33-0.49mole. When the microstructure was analyzed, most celadons excavated from the Beopcheon temple site, Wonju, which are estimated to be used in real life, had a favorable state, and some celadons from the Son-gok 2-ri 4th kiln site were found not to be glazed and sintered properly. When analyzing body crystalline phases of the celadons using the XRD method, quartz and mullite were extracted from all of the samples. And corundum was extracted from sg4 sample. Though firing temperature of each sample was different, they were mostly fired to temperatures between 1150 and $1200^{\circ}C$ and some of them experienced a low temperature of $1100^{\circ}C$ or a high temperature above $1200^{\circ}C$. Various chemical compositions and producing techniques were observed in the celadons from the Beopcheon temple site and Son-gok 2-ri 4th kiln site and it is hard to assure that the Son-gok 2-ri 4th kiln site was the production kiln site of the celadons used in the Beopcheon temple site. But according to the analysis of rare earth elements, some of the celadons from the Beopcheon temple site and Son-gok 2-ri 4th kiln site displayed a distribution pattern with certain regularity and this implies there is a possibility that the raw materials used in producing the ceramics might have come from the same origin. From the perspective of ceramic history, the celadons excavated from the Beopcheon temple site and Son-gok 2-ri 4th kiln site were produced using the same molding and sintering technique. Also, it is estimated that they were produced in the 12th or 13th century, judging from the overall shapes and patterns of the celadons.

  • This study is based on a coating method that provides utilization value as a micronised powder for cosmetic raw materials using natural minerals buried in Bonghwa, Gyeongsangbuk-do in Korea. The mineral powder name is called Buseok, and chemical name is pumice powder. The results of a study on the efficacy of cosmetics are reported by the development of particulate powder to assess the performance of this powder. First of all, in order to coat the surface of this powder with oil, aluminum hydroxide was coated on the particulate surface and then coated with alkylsilan. In addition, it was coated with vegetable oil to prevent condensation of the powder and increase the dispersion in the oil phase. First; the particle size of pumice powder was from 10 to 50mm having porous holes on the surface of the particles. Second; The components of this powder contained $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, $Fe_2O_3$, MgO, CaO, $K_2O_2$, $Na_2O$, $TiO_2$, $TiO_2$, MnO, $Cr_2O_3$, $V_2O_5$. Third: The particles of this powder have a planetary structure and are reddish-brown with porosity through SEM and TEM analysis. Fourth; the far-infrared radiation rate of this parabolic powder was $0.924{\mu}m$, and the radiative energy was $3.72{\times}102W/m^2$ and ${\mu}m$. In addition, the anion emission is 128 ION/cc, which shows that the coating remains unchanged. Based on these results, it is expected to be widely applied to basic cosmetics such as BB cream, cushion foundation, powderfect, and other color-coordinated cosmetics, sunblock cream, wash-off massage pack as an application of cosmetics. • 1. Under the request of the Dept. of Navy, U.S.A. this investigation has been done as a part work of the Navy Research Project of Tropical Woods at the Wood Technology Laboratory, School of Forestry, Yale University, New Haven, Conn., U.S.A. 2. In order to determine the equilibrium moisture content and hysteresis loop of three tropical woods (Ocotea, Tablebuia, and Hymenaea) which have not been tested the physical properties, this investigation has made with small thin specimens (1.5"${\times}$1.0${\times}$0.4) under four different controlled relative humidity conditions (that is, 21%, 53%, 60%, and 83%). 3. As the result, the equilibrium moisture content and hysteresis loop of three tropical woods have been shown in the Table and Figures 2, 3 and 4. 4. According to the results, it is concluded that there are the considerable differences in the equilibrium moisture content under the same relative humidity condition and the type of hysteresis loop between different species which have been tested. 5. Desorption of lumber with slightly oscillating humidity of each species tested, has shown on the Table 9 and it has almost the same tendency of results showing the difference between species as the small specimen. 6. Although it is hard to compare the difference of results, E.M.C., and hysteresis between tropical wood and woods from temperate zone, there are, however, still some difference between species. 7. The author wishes to acknowledge my indebtedness to Prof. Wangaard, and Prof. Dickinson for the competent guidance and good advice on this study, and also to Mr. Clanchs for the help in getting materials for the experiment.
