  • In a recent tragic fire incident, the Plasco Tower collapsed after an intense outburst of fire lasting for three and a half hours and claiming the lives of 16 firefighters and 6 civilians. This paper will present continuing collaborative work between Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Queen's University in Canada to model the progressive collapse of the tower. The fire started at the 10th floor and was observed to have travelled along the floor horizontally and through the staircase and windows vertically. Plasco Tower was steel structure and all the steel sections were fabricated by welding standard European channel or angle profiles and no fire protection was applied. Four internal columns carried the loads transferred by the primary beams, and box columns were constructed along the perimeter of the building as a braced tube for resisting seismic loading. OpenSees fibre-based sections and displacement-based beam-column elements are used to model the frames, while shell elements are used for the reinforced concrete floor slabs. The thermal properties and elevated temperature mechanical properties are as recommended in the Eurocodes. The results in this preliminarily analysis are based on rough estimations of the structure's configuration. The ongoing work looks at modeling the Plasco Tower based on the most accurate findings from reviewing many photographs and collected data.

  • It is necessary to express and evaluate annoyances, caused by noises, as a comparable quantity for establishing an efficient, economic and user-oriented noise control plan. In particular, cares should be taken for impact noises, since their dynamic properties are different from those of steady-state noises. A series of preliminary experiments were carried out to quantify the annoyances caused by floor impact noises. Results suggests that the characteristics of an impact source was more important factor than the properties of a floor structure for determining loudness and noisiness of subjects. Also, the heavy impact source was found to be felt louder and noisier by 5-6dB than the light impact source.

  • Floating floors, which are mainly used for reducing interior noise levels of railway vehicle, are known to be superior to single structure in respect to sound transmission loss and vibration reduction performances. The stiffness of isolator is one of the important design variables in floating floors. From modal tests, modal properties of underframe, top floor and isolators are derived. They are used as input parameters for predicting structure-borne noise using AUTOSEA.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a floor mortar construction technique which has high strength and inherent mechanical properties and does not cause cracks due to shrinkage after construction. It has been demonstrated that compressive strength, bending strength, flow with floor mortar, and crack reduction performance. As a result, it was confirmed that the developed floor mortar had the same or better performance comparing with the existing foreign products. The results of this experiment can be used as a validation material for high performance and high flowable mortar construction technology with excellent material performance, economical efficiency and construction ability by securing the required performance as floor mortar and selecting the optimal formulation.

  • This study is a basic investigation of the contents and services relevant to the domestic vacation house business. In which, the trade scale, types of housing, and environmental conditions of various property locations were analyzed. The characteristics of properties listed on the Japanese website that conducts the greatest volume of vacation house trade in Japan were examined, and the following results were obtained: Villa areas, villas, and resort condos (resort mansions) are the three basic types of properties handled in the vacation house trade. In this market, sales per unit in villa areas and per spaces in resort condos accounted for the highest volume of trade, followed by that of villas (individual houses). In terms of land area, floor area, and sales price per house type, the relatively cheaper small and medium-sized vacation houses are more frequently traded, than expensive large-scale villas. In particular, small multi-family type villas (such as in resort condos) are the most popular. Land and floor area, and sales prices all show considerable variation depending on the type of property considered. Therefore, a business initiative to provide a more detailed classification of properties is required. In terms of the environment of vacation properties, most are located on coasts, plateaus, or inland mountains, and are generally within three-hours' traveling distance of large cities.

  • Floor mortar experiences dry shrinkage by temperature and humidity difference of internal matrix with material type. Also, since floor mortar is influenced by environmental conditions during placing and curing period, cracks are likely to be occurred. In this study, it was evaluated the hardening and dry shrinkage properties of non-sintered binder based floor mortar utilizing alpha-hemihydrate gypsum which has expansibility in order to prevent crack of the floor mortar. It was applied to the construction site, and examined the effects of external environmental conditions on shrinkage deformation and cracking. Different types of slag accelerated initial and final setting in comparison with cement mortar and its compressive strength was satisfied standard compressive strength for floor mortar. Also shrinkage deformation behavior after the initial expansion exhibited a similar tendency with the cement mortar. From the field application result, no crack was found from slag mortar, and it is determined that the slag mortar has better dimensional stability than cement mortar caused by external environment conditions.

  • Application of UV curing technique for poly vinyl chloride (PVC) floor tiles coating has improved the quality of PVC floor. Various formulations including acrylated oligomers based on a polyurethane were blended with reactive monomers, photoinitiators and other additives. The used oligomers are commercial aliphatic urethane acrylates. Thin films were prepared on PVC tiles by bar coating with different formulations using UV radiation. The coating resins were characterized by FTIR. The properties of UV-cured films such as gloss grade and adhesion were examined. The properties of UV-cured films dependent on the influence of composition and processing conditions was studied. The investigation was conducted to achieve an optimal domain of composition and desired coating effect.

  • The objective of this paper is to investigate the properties of strength and thermal conductivity of floor cement mortal using copper fiber. Compressive strength thermal conductivity and length change are tested. According to the experimental results, compressive strength, thermal strength and thermal conductivity of mortar using copper finer are shown to be increased with increase of the contents of copper fiber and the aspect ratio. In case of length change of cement mortar using copper fiber also shows deline tendency compared with that of plain mortar.

  • A fracture was generated by change of clearance and deterioration of material properties on the sheet metal through temperature. This paper describes the results of a prediction about the temperature of the sheet metal during continuous stamping process, because the temperature increase of the sheet metal has a detrimental effect on formability. To analyze the temperature increase of the sheet metal during continuous stamping process, tensile and friction tests were performed from room temperature to 300$^{\circ}C$ at warm condition in this study. As temperature increase, tensile strength, elongation, strain hardening exponent and anisotropy coefficient for each specimens were decreased. On the other hand, friction coefficients were increased. From the FE-simulation results, temperature upward tendency was identified on dies and sheet metal. These observations are rationalized on the basis of the material properties, friction coefficient vs. temperature relationship for the sheet.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest a fundamental data for change of dynamic properties according to the loading time of resilient materials. 18 kinds of resilient materials included 4 representative types were measured at the load time of 24hours and 2hours by the method of Korea standard (KS F 2868) measuring the dynamic stiffness and the loss factor of materials under floating floors. As a result, the dynamic stiffness was increased rapidly in case of expandable polystyrene and rubber materials according to the load time, especially before 2 hours. The loss factor was represented that rubber materials with high elasticity are high, and expandable polystyrene, polyester, poly ethylene materials with low elasticity are low.
