The engine room of ship is a synthetic system being composed of many machineries. Therefore, the reliability and safety of the all system of machinery is as important as each machine. In this paper, in order to reudce engine troubles while operation and to contribute in developing a high reliable marine engine the author analysed the factors of marine engine troubles by principal com-ponent analysis method. Analysed data are marine engine troubles of sea casualties from 1980 to 1985. It is found that the major part of marine engine troubles resulted from personal mistake, and also the troubles of shaft, propeller and cylinder occupied considerable proportion.

The diesel engine is often a serious excitation source in ships. Both the varying cylinder gas forces and the reciprocating and rotating mass forces associated with the crank and the connecting rod mechanism produce ample possibilities for excitation of the engine structure itself, the shafting, the surrounding substructures as well as the hull girder. This paper presents a guide for optimization of excitation forces produced by the marine propulsion 2-stroke diesel engine. The computational program for predicting the excitation forces is developed and applied to 2-stroke in-line engines. The object function is defined as the work done by every cylinder excitation force which is related to the mode shape of the diesel engine system, especially in the torsional vibration of the shafting. As a practical application of the presented method, the crank angle of 7 cylinder 2-stroke engine is optimized to reduce torsional vibration stresses on the shafting. Compared with the regular firing angle, about 60% of the 4th order torsional vibratory stress on the propeller shaft can be reduced by optimizing the crank angle irregularly. The usefulness of the presented optimization method is confirmed by the measurements.

In this paper, sensitivity analysis for the coupled axial and torsional undamped free vibration of ship propulsion shafting is proposed. The purpose of this study is to effectively and optimally design the resonance frequencies of propulsion shafting affecting barred speed range of main engine by modifying the diameters of intermediate and propeller shafts. The presented method is validated by the sensitivity analysis for the natural frequencies of propulsion shafting of two real large merchant ships. In addition, the changes of natural frequency and resonance main engine speed are discussed in case that the diameter is varied within the range regulated by the rule of shipping register.

This paper shows the numerical and experimental results about the hydrodynamic characteristics of X-Twisted rudders having continuous twist of the leading edge along the span. All the results were compared with those of the semi-balanced rudder. Calculation through the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes Equation (RANSE) code with propeller sliding meshes shows large inflow angle and fast inflow velocity in the vicinity of ${\pm}0.7$ R from the shaft center, so it may cause cavitation. Also, X-Twisted rudder has relatively small inflow angles along the rudder span compared with semi-balanced rudder. For the performance validation, rudders for two large container carriers were designed and tested. Cavitation tests at the medium sized cavitation tunnel with respect to the rudder types and twisted angles showed the effectiveness of twist on cavitation and the tendency according to the twist. And the resistance, self-propulsion and manoeuvring tests were also carried out at the towing tank. As a result, in the case of X-Twisted rudder, ship speed was improved with good manoeuvring performance. Especially, it was found out that manoeuvring performance between port and starboard was well balanced compared with semi-balanced rudders.

In this study, the safety and effectiveness of ope cutter, developed to prevent frequent accident propeller windingness at sea. First, we calculated the bolt strength of the three types of rope cutting devices used in the experiment and the torsional stresses on the shafting system theoretical equation and the finite element method. As a result, the bolts used in the rope cutter confirmed from the viewpoint of safety life design and fail safe design. Also, safety satisfactory because of the small effect on the shaft system when locking up. Experiments were carried out to cut ropes and fishing nets from the sea using the ships equipped with three types of rope cutters verified to be safe. As a result, ropes of 20 to 50 mm in thickness were generally cut. It was found that the cutting efficiency of a rope cutter attached to shafting decreased when cutting thick ropes.

Lip type stern tube sealing systems have used in almost all the middle or large ships which are being constructed in these days. It seems that the pressure fluctuation of the seal ring interspace, the cross-section profile and the materials quality of the seal rings have great effects on the sealing fuction of this sealing system. In this paper, the mechanical movement of lip seal ring which plays the most important role in stern tube sealing system and the possibility of leakage caused by pressure fluctuation are studied by theory and experiment. Using the finite element method for the axi-symetric object which receives the torsional load, the displacement and stress analysis of the seal rings, and also the possibility of crack occurance is checked by theoretical analysis. If the force which seal ring lip periphery receives is too small, there will be the possibility of leakage caused by the pressure fluctuation of the seal ring interspace, and if this force is too large, the frictional force between the seal ring and the liner will become problematical. The possibility of leakage caused by hardening of seal ring materials and creep phenomena of tested seal rings are also examined. The trial seal rings were designed and manufactured using the program of displacement and stress analysis developed in this study and the experimental apparatus to test the trial seal rings was also designed and manufactured. This trial seal rings were fitted in the experimental apparatus which was made in the same form as an actual stern tube. The one side of this apparatus was filled with sea water and the other side of it was filled with the lubricating oil. The leakage of oil and sea water was checked and the temperature was measured, rotating the propeller shaft at the constant velocity by D.C. motor. It was proved that the trial seal rings made in Viton rubber functioned excellenty but the trial seal rings made in N.B.R. rubber had problem in its durability.

In commercial vehicles such as frame-based mid-size trucks, it is easy to reduce vibration caused by driveline with the cab mount system. There are no critical driveline vibration problems associated with these vehicles up to now. However, in the case of a similar grade of monocoque type mini-bus, there are no effective vibration isolation components such as a cab mount. Vibration caused by driveline is quite a complex problem to understand in terms of which part governs the phenomenon and how the problem can be solved. Thus, we have to manage the design factor about the driveline and mount system strictly at the early stage of vehicle development. Low frequency vibration caused by the driveline system is investigated in this study. We created the CAE driveline model and analyze low frequency vibration. Then contribution analysis about each design factor of driveline and mount system is performed. Finally, we can obtain the optimized design factor for a driveline system of a mini-bus, which is verified by the vehicle test results.

Duties required for naval ship such as anti-submarine, anti-ship, and supply, etc are diversified, so the ECS (Enfineering Control System) is required for executing the mission effectively. The ECS monitors and controls the propulsion system in order that naval ship can perform the mission. As the in-country development of ECS is progressed, a test system for ECS is needed, and a naval ship propulsion system simulator based on CODOG was developed on this study. The naval ship propulsion system simulator based on CODOG which is divided into gas turbine model, diesel engine model, reduction gear model and controllable pitch propeller model, simulates to feedback of control commands of ECS. As a result of the experiment, it is able to confirm speed, torque and power, etc. of the gas turbine, diesel engine and shaft according to ECS propulsion mode.

Recently. the excessive diesel engine torsional excitation of typical energy saving ships has resulted in severe damages of the propeller shaft. Up to now the design and torsional vibration analysis of the marine diesel shafting system has been performed on the assumption that excitations are deterministic. But a diesel engine excitation varies randomly from cylinder to cylinder and from cycle to cycle, due to the imperfect operation of the engine components due to engine misfiring. consequently, a more rational analysis method for the propulsion shafting torsional vibration is required. In this paper probabilistic analysis method of the marine diesel engine shafting system under torsional vibration is presented. First a response surface representing maximum shear stresses in a shafting system is built. Then Monte Carlo simulation with subsequent approximation of the results by one of Pearson's curves, is performed. Some numerical results based on the proposed method are compared with t도 some numerical data available. They show acceptable agreements with the data.
