  • The processes of supplying propellants into propellant tanks play important roles during launch preparation of satellite launch vehicle. The total weight of launch vehicle greatly depends on the accuracy of filling quantity of propellant during launch preparation. Among propellants used for launch vehicles a cryogenic propellant such as liquid oxygen is widely adapted as an oxidizer for launch vehicles. Such cryogenic propellant usually resides in a propellant tank as two-phase fluid with liquid and gas, which needs an accurate level measurement system to detect the position of propellant surface precisely. In this paper the fabricating process of a level measurement system using capacitance type with three electrodes is analyzed. In addition, the change of electric signal according to the height of liquid is verified by testing the level measurement system under consideration. The results of tests shows as expected the linear trend of voltage according to the change of water height in a tank.

  • The temperature coefficient of a gun propellant could be reduced by applying an appropriate surface coating material. The burning rates of those propellants do not very strongly depend on the propellant temperature. It is a good method to increase the muzzle velocity of gun ammunitions by utilizing the permissible maximum pressure in the gun barrel independent of the propellant temperature. During this study, properties of surface coated propellants were confirmed by results in tests of a closed bomb and 40mm Gun firing, and confirmed that production of coating propellant could be possible.

  • We have analyzed the temperature and humidity aging test results of a composite solid propellant. The temperature aging test was performed to evaluate the storage life of a propellant, while the humidity aging test could provide the hygroscopicity of Ammonium Perchlorate(AP) exposed to .elative humidity (RH) 10, 30, $50\%$ environment. A specimen was used in the temperature test, and a block of propellant from the actual motor was used in the humidity test. We report that the 4-month storing at 60 degree is equivalent to the 10-year 60 degree condition. The composite solid propellant with HTPB binder showed signs of hardening with time lapse but the effect of humidity up to RH $50\%$ was not noticeable.

  • Ultrasonic inspection method is more profitable than X-ray radiographic inspection in cost and effect of defect detection such as dis-bond, damage, and it does'nt need special constructions and can be possible real time inspection with safety. This report explains the experiment and analysis of ultrasonic property of solid propellant and the inspection methods of propellant/liner dis-bond by inside or outside inspection, and of propellnat micro crack by damage. At result, ultrasonics has big attenuation$(6\sim8db/cm)$ in solid propellant, and it. can be possiblle to detect the defect of propellant/liner dis-bond by inside or outside inspection. And also it can be possible to detect the propellant micro crack caused by damage by using ultrasonic attenuation.

  • The position effect of the solid propellant in the combustion chamber on the decrease of the differential pressure has been investigated using the IBcode. Generally the metallic cartridge or CCC (combustible cartridge case) as the propellant for the cannon has been loaded. The position of the propellant(cartridge) is, therefore, a major factor for the interior ballistics in case the combustion chamber is larger than the cartridge. In this study, three cases of the existence of empty space in the chamber has been considered. As results, the case of the propellant located in the region near the base and breech has shown that the negative differential pressure and the difference between the breech pressure and the base pressure are much higher than those of the case of the propellant located in the center of the chamber. The case of the propellant in the center of the chamber is, therefore, more profitable to improve the performance of the interior ballistics.

  • A development of a composite solid propellant is carried out for an application to gas generators as an energy source of rocket system. With HTPB as a propellant binder which has 80% of particle loading ratio, a favorable rheology, and moderate curing properties at the range of $-50^{\circ}C{\sim}70^{\circ}C$, AN is selected as the first kind of oxidizer having the characteristics of a low flame temperature, minimal particle residual as well as nontoxic products. AP is the second oxidant for ballistic property control. A series of experiments for the improvement of physical properties were conducted and resulted in the propellant formulation having 30% of strain rate at 8 bar of max. stress.

  • The development and evaluation of solid propellant were performed for the turbopump pyro starter, which start up the liquid propellant rocket engine for the Space Launch Vehicle (SLV). Requirements for the turbopump pyro starter propellant include the production of low flame temperature, low burning rate and nontoxic gas to protect the mechanical corrosion or air pollution. This study describes the development of the solid propellant composition which is based on PCP binder. DHG (Dihydroxy glyoxime), which has advantages of oxygen balance and ignition, was used as coolant. The mechanical properties and burning rate of the propellants were measured. Finally, static fired test was performed to prove the possibility of development.

  • During the mission operation time, it is very important to estimate the spacecraft propellant remaining as accurately as possible. This is because the quantity of propellant is related directly to how long the satellite can be operated ín orbit. There are two different methods for spacecraft propellant gauging; the PVT method and the book-keeping method. This paper describes the characteristics and applications of these methods using the flight operation data of KOMPSAT-1. Additionally, propellant consumption rates in delta-V maneuvering and each attitude control submode are analyzed according to spacecraft operation modes. The earth search submode shows the highest propellant consumption rate.

  • Geostationary satellites undergo various orbital perturbations and this results in location change. Therefore, all the geostationary satellites use the thruster in order to control the location change. For this purpose, the suitable amount of liquid propellant is mounted and the amount of propellant is reduced as time goes by. This means that the lifetime of the satellite depends on the residual propellant amount. Therefore precise residual propellant gauging is very important for the mitigation of economic losses arised from premature removal of satellite from its orbit, satellites replacement planning, slot management and so on. In this paper, we introduce the propellant gauging methods used in the geostationary satellites and the propellant gauging method studied in the laboratory level.
