  • In this paper, the development of wideband MIMO channel sounder and a pilot measurement result is described for research on the multi antenna radio propagation characteristics considering urban environment at microwave frequencies. We developed $4{\times}4$ MIMO(BW:100 MHz) channel sounder using the high speed switching mechanism and periodic pseudo random binary signals method considering next generation mobile communication system. A pilot measurement campaign at the urban area of Bundang is presented for confirmation of system performance. From the analysis of measurement data, wideband path loss exponent of 3.7 and 8 GHz band is 1.79 and 1.76. Average RMS delay spread is 200 ns and 42 ns respectively. From the experiment results, operation of this measurement system is confirmed considering research for a coverage, SNR and channel capacity in urban environment at microwave frequencies.

  • Grain boundary characteristics and corrosion behavior of Alloy 600 material were investigated using the concept of grain boundary control by thermomechanical treatment(TMT). The grain boundary character distribution (GBCD) was analyzed by electron backscattered diffraction pattern. The effects of GBeD variation on intergranular at tack(JGA) and primary water stress corrosion cracking(PWSeC) were also evaluated. Changes in the fraction of coinci dence site lattice(CSL) boundaries in each cycle of TMT process were not distinguishable, but the total eSL boundary frequencies for TMT specimens increased about 10% compared with those of the commercial Alloy 600 material. It was found from IGA tests that the resistance to IGA was improved by TMT process. However, it was found from PWSCC test that repeating of TMT cycles resulted in the gradual decrease of the time to failure and the maximum load due to change in grain boundary characteristics, while the average crack propagation rate of primary crack increased mainly due to suppression of secondary crack propagation. It is considered that these corrosion characteristics in TMT specimens is attributed to 'fine tuning of grain boundary' mechanism.

  • This study, it was tried to evaluate the asphalt behavior under tensile loading conditions through indirect Brazilian and direct tensile tests, experimentally and numerically. This paper is important from two points of view. The first one, a new test method was developed for the determination of the direct tensile strength of asphalt and its difference was obtained from the indirect test method. The second one, the effects of particle size and loading rate have been cleared on the tensile fracture mechanism. The experimental direct tensile strength of the asphalt specimens was measured in the laboratory using the compression-to-tensile load converting (CTLC) device. Some special types of asphalt specimens were prepared in the form of slabs with a central hole. The CTLC device is then equipped with this specimen and placed in the universal testing machine. Then, the direct tensile strength of asphalt specimens with different sizes of ingredients can be measured at different loading rates in the laboratory. The particle flow code (PFC) was used to numerically simulate the direct tensile strength test of asphalt samples. This numerical modeling technique is based on the versatile discrete element method (DEM). Three different particle diameters were chosen and were tested under three different loading rates. The results show that when the loading rate was 0.016 mm/sec, two tensile cracks were initiated from the left and right of the hole and propagated perpendicular to the loading axis till coalescence to the model boundary. When the loading rate was 0.032 mm/sec, two tensile cracks were initiated from the left and right of the hole and propagated perpendicular to the loading axis. The branching occurs in these cracks. This shows that the crack propagation is under quasi-static conditions. When the loading rate was 0.064 mm/sec, mixed tensile and shear cracks were initiated below the loading walls and branching occurred in these cracks. This shows that the crack propagation is under dynamic conditions. The loading rate increases and the tensile strength increases. Because all defects mobilized under a low loading rate and this led to decreasing the tensile strength. The experimental results for the direct tensile strengths of asphalt specimens of different ingredients were in good accordance with their corresponding results approximated by DEM software.

  • In this paper the feedback loop mechanisms that are inherent in the management of water supply systems were identified based on the system dynamics modeling methodology. As a result, a system dynamics (SD) computer simulation model that can be used to aid efficient management of water supply systems was developed. The developed SD model can be used to predict operating conditions of water supply systems including the effects of pipe maintenance on the entire system. The developed model is consisted of water supply, pipe maintenance and water supply business finance model. The operation and maintenance data from a study water supply system were used to verify the model and to predict the past and future operating conditions of the system. The policy leverage that greatly affects the operating condition was evaluated by the sensitivity analyses for the operational indices due to changes in the exogenous variables. It was found that while the pipe maintenance related exogenous variables had great effects on the leakage and conditions of pipes, they did not have great effects on the major operational indices such as revenue water ratio. It is considered that the social costs due to leaks and pipe breaks and the corresponding mechanism of propagation of the costs must be modeled to better evaluate the effects of pipe maintenance on the operational conditions of water supply systems.

  • Fast and reliable message broadcasting is critical for safety critical applications of VANET due to the urgency and/or significance of the messages for passengers and drivers. For reliable message delivery, a mechanism for checking the reception of message at the neighboring vehicles and retransmitting it if necessary is required. Especially, in urban environments, where the traffic density tends to be high, mechanisms that minimize control message overhead such as beacon are appropriate in order to minimize the message collisions. Furthermore, broadcast delivery is especially difficult at the intersection due to the road side obstacles such buildings, and hence, a mechanism that enables effective and efficient delivery across intersections is required. In this paper, we propose a beaconless reliable and efficient broadcast approach which specifically taking into account the urban streets. The proposed approach checks the message reception of neighboring vehicles implicitly by taking into account the broadcast of message by next vehicle as the acknowledgement. When retransmissions is necessary around the intersections, vehicles located within the intersection area, where the chance of successful signal propagation toward every branch of the intersection is higher due to less signal attenuation caused by road side obstacles, are to do the retransmissions. Simulation results show that the proposed approach can provide better reliability while consume less resources than the existing approaches.

  • A series of test was performed measuring the failure strength and failure mode of Gr/Pi, $[0^{\circ}/45^{\circ}/90^{\circ}/-45^{\circ}]_s$ laminate containing a single pin loaded hole. The finite element method is applied to calculate the stress distribution in the laminates, then the failure load and the failure mode were predicted by means of the characteristic length. 12 different geometric variations were developed to analyze the effects of the ratio of specimen width to hole diameter (W/d) and ratio of edge distance to hole diameter (L/d). X-Ray of NDE methods were utilized in finding out the initial defects, damage and the fracture mechanism, and SEM(Scanning Electron Microscopes) was used the evaluation of the fracture mechanism and crack propagation around hole under tension pin loading. $[0^{\circ}/45^{\circ}/90^{\circ}/-45^{\circ}]_s$ laminate are found to be most sensitive to W/d but not so influenced by L/d. The failure mode and tensile strength predicted by the model show agreement with experiment data for pin loading bolted jointed test except range of $L/d{\leqq}3$.

  • The Yeonghae basin is located at the northeastern part of the Yangsan fault (YSF; a potentially active fault). The study of the architecture of the Yeonghae basin is important to understand the activity of the Yangsan fault system (YSFS) as well as the basin formation mechanism and the activity of the YSFS. For this study, Digital Elevation Model (DEM) was used to highlight the marginal faults, and structural fieldwork was performed to understand the geometry of the intra-basinal structures and the nature of the bounding faults. DEM analysis reveals that the eastern margin is bounded by the northern extension of the YSF whereas the western margin is bounded by two curvilinear sub-parallel faults; Baekseokri fault (BSF) and Gakri fault (GF). The field data indicate that the YSF is striking in the N-S direction, steeply dipping to the east, and experienced both sinistral and dextral strike-slip movements. Both the BSF and GF are characterized dominantly by an oblique right-lateral strike-slip movement. The stress indicators show that the maximum horizontal compressional stress was in NNE to NE and NNW-SSE, which is consistent with right-lateral and left-lateral movements of the YSFS, respectively. The plotted structural data show that the NE-SW is the predominant direction of the structural elements. This indicates that the basin and marginal faults are mainly controlled by the right-lateral strike-slip movements of the YSFS. Based on the structural architecture of the Yeonghae basin, the study area represents a contractional zone rather than an extensional zone in the present time. We proposed two models to explain the opening and developing mechanism of the Yeonghae basin. The first model is that the basin developed as an extensional pull-apart basin during the left-lateral movement of the YSF, which has been reactivated by tectonic inversion. In the second model, the basin was developed as an extensional zone at a dilational quadrant of an old tip zone of the northern segment of the YSF during the right-lateral movement stage. Later on, the basin has undergone a shortening stage due to the closing of the East Sea. The second model is supported by the major trend of the collected structural data, indicating predominant right-lateral movement. This study enables us to classify the Yeonghae basin as an inverted strike-slip basin. Moreover, two opposite strike-slip movement senses along the eastern marginal fault indicate multiple deformation stages along the Yangsan fault system developed along the eastern margin of the Korean peninsula.

  • To characterize the initiation, propagation and termination of Cochlodinium polykrikoides blooms in the southeast coastal waters of Korea, 2007, we have analyzed the data set of phytoplankton composition, physical and chemical water properties, and meterological data. The development of C. polykrikoides bloom in 2007 can be summarized in three steps. The first stage from middle of July to end of August was characterized by an unusually persistent and strong southerly wind. C. polykrikoides blooms established already by the strong wind in the middle of south coastal waters were advected intermittently into the study area. Accordingly, highly variable cell densities of C. polykrikoides were observed. At the second stage a favorable growing conditions for C. polykrikoides was developed, which was directed by changes in wind direction from south to northeast and thus enhanced transportation of offshore waters into inshore (August 8 to 30). C. polykrikoides bloom occurred through typical mechanism and showed high cell density. The last stage was represented by disappearance of C. polykrikoides. Typoon 'Nari' carrying heavy rain brought an unfavorable habitat to C. polykrikoides. Low saline condition formed in coastal water due to typoon effects continuously drove the dominant species to diatoms and flagellates which were prevailing over C. polykrikoides in this circumstances(from the middle of September). These stepwise processes could be the causative mechanism of the extraordinarily persistent C. polykrikoides bloom observed in southeast coastal water of Korea, 2007.

  • A new kind of partially precast or prefabricated castellated steel reinforced concrete beam, which is abbreviated here as CPSRC beam, was presented and introduced in this paper. This kind of CPSRC beam is composed of a precast outer-part and a cast-in-place inner-part. The precast outer-part is composed of an encased castellated steel shape, reinforcement bars and high performance concrete. The cast-in-place inner-part is made of common strength concrete, and is casted with the floor slabs simultaneously. In order to investigate the shear performance of the CPSRC beam, experiments of six CPSRC T-beam specimens, together with experiments of one cast-in-place SRC control T-beam specimen were conducted. All the specimens were subjected to sagging bending moment (or positive moment). In the tests, the influence of casting different strength of concrete in the cross section on the shear performance of the PPSRC beam was firstly emphasized, and the effect of the shear span-to-depth ratio on that were also especially taken into account too. During the tests, the shear force-deflection curves were recorded, while the strains of concrete, the steel shapes as well as the reinforcement stirrups at the shear zone of the specimens were also measured, and the crack propagation pattern together with the failure pattern was as well observed in detail. Based on the test results, the shear failure mechanism was clearly revealed, and the effect of the concrete strength and shear span-to-depth ratios were investigated. The shear capacity of such kind of CPSRC was furthermore discussed, and the influences of the holes on the steel shape on the shear performance were particularly analyzed.

  • The method of measuring the nonlinear effect of ultrasonic waves is suggested as a new approach for the effective evaluation of material degradation. In sonic wave propagation, the existence of nonlinear effect can be demonstrated by the generation of higher order harmonic waves. So, at first, the mechanism of generating higher order harmonic components due to nonlinear effect was explained by using nonlinear elasticity. Next, we attempted to measure how much of the higher order harmonic component was generated in the degraded material. For this purpose, a measurement system mainly based on a high-powered nonlinear ultrasonic signal analysis system was constructed, and SS41 and SS45 specimen intentionally degraded by tensile load and fatigue load were tested. From the results, we confirmed that the measurement of nonlinear acoustic effect may be useful for the evaluation of material degradation.
