A turbulent combustion model, based on edge flame dynamics, is discussed in order to predict global extinction of turbulent flames. The model is applicable to the broken flamelet regime of turbulent combustion, in which global extinction of turbulent flame is achieved by gradual expansion of flame holes. The edge flame dynamics is the key mechanism to describe the flame hole expansion or contraction. For flames with Lewis numbers near unity, there is a $Damk{\ddot{o}}hler$ number, namely the crossover $Damk{\ddot{o}}hler$ number, at which edge flame changes its direction of propagation. The parametric region between the quasi-steady extinction condition and the edge-flame crossover condition is a metastable region, in that flames without edge can stay in their burning states while flames with edge have to retract to expand quenching holes. Using the above properties of edge flame, Hartley and Dold proposed a Lagrangian hole dynamics, which allows us to simulate transient variation of quenching holes. In their model, each stoichiometric surface is subjected to a random sequence of scalar dissipation rate compatible to the equilibrium turbulence. Then, each stoichiometric surface will evolve, according to the combustion map, dependent on the scalar dissipation rate and existence of flame edge, If all the burning surfaces are annihilated, the event can be declared as a global extinction. The consequence obtained from the above model also can be used as a subgrid model to determine local extinction occurring in a calculation grid.

Surface fatigue crack propagation tests by plane bending fatigue were conducted on the welding specimens of an aluminium alloy, A5083-0, having an edge through thickness notch to study the fatigue crack growth characteristics. Moreover, the experiments were performed in order to clarify the fatigue crack initiation and growth. The properties of fatigue crack growth were quantitatively inspected in welded metal, heat-affected zone and base metal of the welding specimens. The main results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. It is found that the hardness distributions of A5083-0 aluminium alloy weldments are quite different with those of steel material weldments, so that the hardness distribution becomes lower in the following order: base metal, heat-affected zone and weld metal. 2. It is observed that the grain size of this specimen weldment appears to be almost equal to the base metal, when TIC welding method is adopted. 3. In a surface fatigue crack initiation and growth, the fatigue crack does not begin by opening-closing mechanism until hardening is saturated at the crack tip. 4. The fatigue crack growth characteristics of A5083-0 alluminium alloy weldments can be concluded.$${\frac{da}{dn}}=C({\Delta}K)^n=3.8{\times}10^{-9}{({\frac}{1}{2}{\Delta}S_t{\sqrt{{\pi}a}})}^{2.4}$$

Interior permanent magnet synchronous motor(IPMSM) has become a popular choice in electric vehicle applications, due to their excellent power to weight ratio. In this paper maximum torque control of IPMSM drive using artificial intelligent(AI) controller is proposed. The control method is applicable over the entire speed range and considered the limits of the inverter's current and voltage rated value. For each control mode, a condition that determines the optimal d-axis current $i_d$ for maximum torque operation is derived. This paper considers the design and implementation of novel technique of high performance speed control for IPMSM using AI controller. This paper is proposed speed control of IPMSM using adaptive learning mechanism fuzzy neural network(ALM-FNN) and estimation of speed using artificial neural network(ANN) controller. The back propagation neural network technique is used to provide a real time adaptive estimation of the motor speed. The proposed control algorithm is applied to IPMSM drive system controlled ALM-FNN and ANN controller, the operating characteristics controlled by maximum torque control are examined in detail. Also, this paper is proposed the experimental results to verify the effectiveness of AI controller.

Recently, applications of integrated large composite structures have been attempted to many structures of vehicles. To improve the cost performance and reliability of the integrated composite structures, it is necessary to judge structural integrity of the composite structures. For the judgement, we need fracture simulation techniques for composite structures. Many researches oil the fracture simulation method using FEM have been reported by now. Most of the researches carried out simulations considering only matrix cracking and fiber breaking as fracture modes, and did not consider delamination. Several papers have reported the delamination simulation, but all these reports require three-dimensional elements or quasi three- dimensional elements for FEM analysis. Among fracture mechanisms of composite laminates, delamination is the most important factor because it causes stiffness degradation in composite structures. It is known that onset and propagation of delamination are dominated by the strain energy release rate and interfacial moment. In this study, laminated composite has been described by using 3 dimensional finite elements. Then impact behavior of the laminated composite is simulated using FEM(ABAQUS/Explicit) with progressive failure mechanism. These results are compared with experimental results.
From the related engineering principles, analytical solutions for horizontal crack initiation and propagation on a coal panel floor-underlying strata interface due to coal panel excavation are derived in this paper. Two important concepts, namely the critical panel width of horizontal crack initiation on the panel floor-underlying strata interface and the critical panel width of vertical fracture (crack) initiation in the panel floor, have been presented. The resulting analytical solution indicates that: (1) the first criterion can be used to express the condition under which horizontal plane cracks (on the panel floor-underlying strata interface or in the panel floor because of delamination) due to the mining induced vertical stress will initiate and propagate; (2) the second criterion can be used to express the condition under which vertical plane cracks (in the panel floor) due to the mining induced horizontal stress will initiate and propagate; (3) this orthogonal set of horizontal and vertical plane cracks, once formed, will provide the necessary weak network for the flow of gas to inrush into the panel. Two characteristic equations are given to quantitatively estimate both the critical panel width of vertical fracture initiation in the panel floor and the critical panel width of horizontal crack initiation on the interface between the panel floor and its underlying strata. The significance of this study is to provide not only some theoretical bases for understanding the fundamental mechanism of a longwall floor gas inrush problem but also a benchmark solution for verifying any numerical methods that are used to deal with this kind of gas inrush problem.
The variation of sampling errors was characterized using the Waymire-Gupta-Rodriguez-Iturbe multi-dimensional rainfall model(WGR model). The parameters used for this study are those derived by Jung et al. (2000) for the Han River Basin using a genetic algorithm technique. The sampling error problems considered are those for using raingauge network, satellite observation and also for both combined. The characterization of sampling errors was done for each month and also for the downstream plain area and the upstream mountain area, separately. As results of the study we conclude: (1) The pattern of sampling errors estimated are obviously different from the seasonal pattern of monthly rainfall amounts. This result may be understood from the fact that the sampling error is estimated not simply by considering the rainfall amounts, but by considering all the mechanisms controlling the rainfall propagation along with its generation and decay. As the major mechanism of moisture source to the Korean Peninsula is obviously different each month, it seems rather normal to provide different pattern of sampling errors from that of monthly rainfall amounts. (2) The sampling errors estimated for the upstream mountain area is about twice higher than those for the down stream plain area. It is believed to be because of the higher variability of rainfall in the upstream mountain arean than in the down stream plain area.
The mechanism for laminar dust flame propagation can only be elucidated from a comprehensive mathematical model which incorporates conduction and radiation, as well as the chemical kinetics of particle devolatilization and gas phase and char reaction. The mathematical model for a flat, laminar, premixed coal-air flame is applied to the atmospheric coal-air mixtures studied by Smoot and co-workers, and comparisons are made with their measurements and predictions. Here the principal parameter for comparison is the laminar burning velocity. The studies of Smoot and co-workers are first reviewed and compared with those predicted by the present model. The effects of inlet temperature and devolatilization rate constants on the burning velocities are studied with the present model, and compared with their measurements and predictions. Their measured burning velocities are approximately predicted with the present model at relatively high coal concentrations, with a somewhat increased inlet temperature. From the comparisons, their model might over-estimate particle temperature and rates of devolatilization. This would enable coal-air mixtures to be burned without any form of preheat and would tend to increase their computed values of burning velocity.

This paper is proposed adaptive fuzzy-neuro controller for high performance of induction motor drive. The design of this algorithm based on fuzzy-neural network controller that is implemented using fuzzy control and neural network. This controller uses fuzzy rule as training patterns of a neural network. Also, this controller uses the back-propagation method to adjust the weights between the neurons of neural network in order to minimize the error between the command output and actual output. A model reference adaptive scheme is proposed in which the adaptation mechanism is executed by fuzzy logic based on the error and change of nor measured between the motor speed and output of a reference model. The control performance of the adaptive fuzy-neuro controller is evaluated by analysis for various operating conditions. The results of experiment prove that the proposed control system has strong high performance and robustness to parameter variation, and steady-state accuracy and transient response.

In cardiovascular disorders, understanding of endothelial cell (EC) function is essential to elucidate the disease mechanism. Although the mouse model has many advantages for in vivo and in vitro research, efficient procedures for the isolation and propagation of primary mouse EC have been problematic. We describe a high yield process for isolation and in vitro culture of primary EC from mouse arteries (aorta, braches of superior mesenteric artery, and cerebral arteries from the circle of Willis). Mouse arteries were carefully dissected without damage under a light microscope, and small pieces of the vessels were transferred on/in a Matrigel matrix enriched with endothelial growth supplement. Primary cells that proliferated in Matrigel were propagated in advanced DMEM with fetal calf serum or platelet-derived serum, EC growth supplement, and heparin. To improve the purity of the cell culture, we applied shearing stress and anti-fibroblast antibody. EC were characterized by a monolayer cobble stone appearance, positive staining with acetylated low density lipoprotein labeled with 1,1'-dioctadecyl-3,3,3',3'-tetramethyl-indocarbocyanine perchlorate, RT-PCR using primers for von-Willebrand factor, and determination of the protein level endothelial nitric oxide synthase. Our simple, efficient method would facilitate in vitro functional investigations of EC from mouse vessels.
