Effects of Project Based Material on Problem solving Ability and Attitude of Mathematically Gifted in Science High School - Focusing on Probability and Statistics - (주제탐구형 자료가 과학고 수학영재의 문제해결 및 태도에 미치는 효과 - 확률.통계 영역을 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze of gifted students' improvement on mathematical attitude and problem-solving ability through project-based materials in science high school. For this study, research questions are established as follows. 1. Does the project-based materials-used instruction have a positive effect on improving problem-solving ability? 2. Does the project-based materials-used instruction have a positive effect on improving mathematical attitude? To solve these research questions, this study employed a survey and interview type investigation for gifted students' mathematical attitude and problem-solving ability. A subject of classes were randomly selected among the 11th grader in D science high school and designated one class as the experimental group and the other class as the control group. Twelve hours of the project-based materials-used instruction and the traditional textbook-oriented instruction had been carried out in each class. Findings on this study are as follows: First, the project-based material-used instruction is shown to be more effective in enhancing problem-solving ability than the traditional textbook-oriented instruction. Second, the project-based material-used instruction is shown to be more effective in improving mathematical attitude than the traditional textbook-oriented instruction.

  • The attempt to use a 3D model each field such as design, structure, construction, facilities, and estimation in the construction project has recently increased more and more while BIM (Building Information Modeling) that manages the process of generating and managing building data has risen during life cycle of a construction project. While the 2D Drawing based work of each field is achieved in the already existing construction project, the BIM based construction project aims at accomplishing 3D model based work of each field efficiently. Accordingly, the solution that fits 3D model based work of each field and supports plans in order to efficiently accomplish the relevant work is demanded. The estimation, one of the fields of the construction project, has applied BIM to calculate quantity and cost of the building materials used to construction works after taking off building quantity information from the 3D model by a item for a Quantity Take-off grouping the materials relevant to a 3D object. A 3D based estimation program has been commonly used in abroad advanced countries using BIM. The program can only calculate quantity related to one 3D object. In other words, it doesn't support the take-off process considering quantity of a contiguous object. In case of temporary materials used in the frame construction, there are instances where quantity is different by the contiguous object. For example, the formwork of the temporary materials quantity is changed by dimensions of the contiguous object because formwork of temporary materials goes through the quantity take-off process that deduces quantity of the connected object when different objects are connected. A worker can compulsorily adjust quantity so as to recognize the different object connected to the contiguous object and deduces quantity, but it mainly causes the confusion of work because it must complexly consider quantity of other materials related to the object besides. Therefore, this study is to propose the solution that automates the formwork 3D modeling to efficiently accomplish the quantity take-off of formwork by preventing the confusion of the work which is caused by the quantity deduction process between the contiguous object and the connected object.

  • Along the information technology progresses, the demand for the educational application increases which derives the need for cyber education. Cyber education should take the knowledge construction model rather than the knowledge delivery model. For the educational paradigm shift by cyber education, 'Project-Based Learning' and 'Cyber Learning Community' need to be adopted. In this study, project-based cyber learning community for teacher education is developed with 5 major categories: Home(community vision, general information, project list, Q&A), project learning center(preparation for the instructional activities, group-based learning activities, presentations), meeting plaza(request for group mentoring, sharing ideas, meeting specialist, survey participating, forum participating, result presentation), references(cases of project studies, materials for project studies, materials for teacher education, general materials), management(project management, project cases, idea bank, finding partners, dialog with instructors, sharing references, sharing experiences, survey, forum).

  • In spite of the fact that project-based learning has had positive effects on improvement of creation power and expansion of the spirit of inquiry, the project-based learning lesson was difficult to carry out in the classroom. The web overcomes time and space limitations in traditional schools. This study has developed and implemented an online project-based website of children's education, based upon the extensive classroom use of multimedia materials to further students participation and interest in projects of discovery. The developed website shows the entire process used through out the project. This paper presents the project's activities and students' learning, using multimedia and web. This study was conducted in fourth grade of an elementary school for a month. The results of this study suggest that the effects of using the project-based website were improved self-directed learning and generation of new ideas.

Application of Big Data and Machine-learning (ML) Technology to Mitigate Contractor's Design Risks for Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) Projects

  • The risk of project execution increases due to the enlargement and complexity of Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) plant projects. In the fourth industrial revolution era, there is an increasing need to utilize a large amount of data generated during project execution. The design is a key element for the success of the EPC plant project. Although the design cost is about 5% of the total EPC project cost, it is a critical process that affects the entire subsequent process, such as construction, installation, and operation & maintenance (O&M). This study aims to develop a system using machine-learning (ML) techniques to predict risks and support decision-making based on big data generated in an EPC project's design and construction stages. As a result, three main modules were developed: (M1) the design cost estimation module, (M2) the design error check module, and (M3) the change order forecasting module. M1 estimated design cost based on project data such as contract amount, construction period, total design cost, and man-hour (M/H). M2 and M3 are applications for predicting the severity of schedule delay and cost over-run due to design errors and change orders through unstructured text data extracted from engineering documents. A validation test was performed through a case study to verify the model applied to each module. It is expected to improve the risk response capability of EPC contractors in the design and construction stage through this study.

Factors Influencing the Effectiveness of Materials Handling Equipments Supplied in Agriculture

  • Objective: This paper presents the factors influencing the effectiveness of materials handling equipments in agriculture. Background: Agriculture is one of the job categories where work-related musculoskeletal disorders(MSDs) are the most common. Statistics shows that majority of farm workers is exposed to repetitive and forceful body movements, lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, or carrying heavy materials. In such a working environment, materials handling equipments are required and introduced to assist in the prevention of MSDs and other farm injuries. Method: Examples of materials handling equipments are rail carts, portable lifts, and bale handlers. Contributing factors influencing the effectiveness of materials handling equipments supplied in agriculture were identified based on the lessons learned from previous government-funded ergonomic projects. Results: Contributing factors identified include: (1) forward-looking attitude for the standardization of farming, its environments, and handling equipments, (2) participation of farm members in the process and evaluation of project, (3) leadership of project manager, (4) reinforcement of safety education and training, and (5) project selection and priority of handling equipment. Conclusion: Government-funded research planners, farmers, ergonomists, and farm machine experts are recommended to consider the factors identified when implementing materials handling equipments in agriculture. Application: Actual or potential application of this research includes recommendation for the effective implementation of material materials handling equipments in agricultural sectors.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide the conformity for developing project-based teaching$\cdot$learning materials for the mathematically gifted students. And this study presents development procedural model in order to improve the effectiveness, analyze its practical usage and examine the verification of the developed materials. It made the following results regarding the development of project-based teaching$\cdot$learning materials for gifted children in mathematics. First, it is necessary to provide appropriate teaching$\cdot$learning model to develop the materials, and the materials should be restructured to be available to other level students. Second, it is suggested to develop a prototype in order to develop teaching$\cdot$learning materials for gifted children in mathematics, further the prototype needs to be restructured until it satisfies theoretical frame. Third, an introduction should be made before the activity to perform the projects effectively. Fourth, a teacher's guidance should introduce children's examples corresponding to the objectives of learning, the examples of topics examined by students, and teacher's manual and attention for teaching. This study has a point of presenting the detailed guidelines with regards to development of teaching$\cdot$learning materials for gifted students in mathematics.   • "Environmentally Sound and Sustainable Development (ESSD)" is a key word in recent years. The construction industry, have put a great influence on ergonomic and sustainable environment. Recently, "green building certifications", such as Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) and eco-friendly material regulation have been established. With this regard, new construction and aged-housing remodeling projects are required to meet these certification criteria. Multi-housing residents have great concern on eco-product, since many cases are reported that Sick Building Syndrome is caused by toxic substance from building materials. Aged-housing remodeling project is very unique in that building residents are selected prior to design phase. Therefore, the analysis of resident's need for building materials in aged-housing remodeling is relatively easy compared to new building construction. As such, it is very important to analyze their preferences for eco-friendly materials prior to project execution. The purpose of this study is to find the needs of residents and priority of their needs. Based on their needs and priority, this paper provides a new strategy in using environment-friendly materials and maximizing their satisfaction level when aged housing remodeling is constructed. In addition, this paper provide new criteria in selecting new developed environmental materials in remodeling projects for the purpose of improving the safety and health level in construction industry.

  • This paper presents an innovative way of integrating scheduling and project controls with the environmental impact of a construction project to track, monitor, and manage environmental emissions at the activity level. As a starting point, scheduling and project controls help monitor the status of a project to provide an assessment of the duration and sequence of activities. Additionally, project schedules can also reflect resource allocation and costs associated with various phases of a construction project. Owners, contractors and construction managers closely monitor tasks or activities on the critical path(s) and/or longest path(s) calculated through network based scheduling techniques. However, existing industry practices do not take into account environmental impact associated with each activity during the life cycle of a project. Although the environmental impact of a project may be tracked in various ways, that tracking is not tied to the project schedule and, as such, generally is not updated when schedules are revised. In this research, a Cradle to Gate approach is used to estimate environmental emissions associated with each activity of a sample project schedule. The research group has also investigated the potential determination of scenarios of lowest environmental emissions, just as project managers currently determine scenarios with lowest cost or time. This methodology can be scaled up for future work to develop a library of unit emissions associated with commonly used construction materials and equipment. This will be helpful for project owners, contractors, and construction managers to monitor, manage, and reduce the carbon footprint associated with various projects.

Developing English Communicative Ability for Science Gifted Students through Project-based Learning of Publishing English Newspapers (프로젝트 기반 학습의 영자 신문 발간을 통한 과학 영재 학생의 영어 의사소통능력 향상)

  • This study aims to assure the positive influence of publishing English newspapers on improving English communicative ability and explores possibilities of enforcing an explicitly collaborative and independent learning atmosphere through a cooperative project-based publishing process. The project of publishing first KSA English newspapers has completed with a series of processes adopted from project-based learning and teaching strategies. The project involves the initiative process of selecting student editors based on their English abilities and commitment levels followed by planning subjects, themes and materials, distributing tasks and articles, and integrating and editing the outcome. Throughout the whole process volunteers participated independently and collaboratively with minimum supervision. The survey shows that the successfully published English Newspaper resulted in facilitating volunteers' positive self awareness and independent learning attitude as well as improving general English ability. The study discusses possibilities and advantages of publishing newspapers and magazines not for limited language education only, but for integrated project-based learning and teaching with suggestions for further related studies.
