Despite the great success that stellar evolution theory have enjoyed during the last 50 years, new challenges are emerging with recent observations of supernovae: many aspects of supernovae cannot be easily explained by the standard scenarios on supernova progenitors. A few examples include the red supergiant problem - the dearth of Type IIP supernova progenitors with masses higher than about 16 Msun, the non-detection of Type Ib/c supernova progenitors despite very deep searches in pre-supernova optical images, the unexpected blue colors of some Type IIn supernova progenitors, and the exotic stellar explosions of both ultra-faint and super-luminous types that have been only recently discovered. By confronting these observations with new stellar evolution models, we are making significnt progress in better understanding the role of metallicity, rotation and binary interactions for the pre-supernova evolution of massive stars. In this talk, I will give a brief review on the recent observational constraints on supernova progenitors and a progress report on several research projects that deal with pair-instability supernovae from the local Universe, type Ib/c supernovae from massive binary systems, and some peculiar stellar explosions like SN2012Z.
Although the identification of the progenitors of type Ia supernovae (SNeIa) remains controversial, it is generally accepted that they originate from binary star systems in which at least one component is a carbon-oxygen white dwarf (WD); those systems are grouped under the wide umbrella of cataclysmic variables. Current theories for SNeIa progenitors hold that, either via Roche lobe overflow of the companion or via a wind, the WD accumulates hydrogen or helium rich material which is then burned to C and O onto the WD's surface. However, the specifics of this scenario are far from being understood or defined, allowing for a wealth of theories fighting for attention and a dearth of observations to support them. I discuss the latest attempts to identify and study those controversial SNeIa progenitors. I also introduce the most promising progenitor in hand and I present observational diagnostics that can reveal more members of the category.
The progenitors of Type Ibc supernovae (SNe Ibc) have been believed to be massive Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars, formed either through stellar wind mass loss or Roche-lobe outflow in a binary system. But observations indicate that ordinary SNe Ibc have relatively low ejecta masses (~2 Msun), which is not compatible with the WR star scenario for SN Ibc progenitors. On the other hand, helium stars in binary systems which can be produced via mass transfer are also suggested as a possible candidate for SN Ibc progenitors. Binary star evolution models predict that SN Ibc progenitors having final masses of 3-7 Msun can be produced, but their observational properties are not well understood. In this study, we present the parameter study on the observational constraints of helium stars of 3-5 Msun in binary systems using evolutionary models and the atmospheric radiative transfer code CMFGEN. We present the predicted magnitudes and spectra of helium stars in optical bands for different wind velocity profiles and mass loss rates. We also present those observables of the progenitor binary system considering O-type companion stars. Based on the results, we discuss the expected observational properties of SN Ibc progenitors in binary systems. In particular, we discuss the constraints on the progenitor of the SN Ib iPTF13bvn of which progenitor candidate has been identified for the first time in pre-explosion images among SNe Ibc.
31 white dwarfs in 10 open clusters are examined, and their maximum mass and the upper mass limit of their progenitors are obtained as $1.22\pm0.02M_{\bigodot}\;and\;7.2\pm0.4M_{\bigodot}$ respectively, suggesting that the upper mass limit of white dwarfs is less than 8M_{\bigodot}$ The final mass of white dwarfs shows no clear correlation with the initial mass of their progenitors, and it is found that a deficient gap of initial mass exists between $\~4\;and\;~5.2M_{\bigodot}$. This gap seems to correspond to the mass range for carbon detonation or deflagration. The total expected numbers of white dwarfs are $11\~22$ in Hyades with 7 known white dwarfs and 17 in Praesepe with 8 known white dwarfs. These known white dwrfs are all younger than the others in both clusters. But one known white dwarf in Pleiades is older one among $2\~3$ expected white dwarfs.
Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) have provided the first evidence that the Universe is accelerating. Nevertheless, the nature of the progenitors has remained a mystery, indeed controversial. In this talk I will first summarize the main supernova explosion mechanisms and the observational classification of supernovae. I will show how SNe Ia can be used as standardizable distance candles and discuss possible limitations of the method. In the main part of the talk I will discuss the main progenitor models that have been proposed, emphasizing the problems and advantages of each, and how they can be observationally tested. I will then present some relatively recent discoveries by the Palomar Transient Factory and most recently in M82 that directly constrain the progenitors in a few cases.
Neuromesodermal progenitors (NMPs) constitute a bipotent cell population that generates a wide variety of trunk cell and tissue types during embryonic development. Derivatives of NMPs include both mesodermal lineage cells such as muscles and vertebral bones, and neural lineage cells such as neural crests and central nervous system neurons. Such diverse lineage potential combined with a limited capacity for self-renewal, which persists during axial elongation, demonstrates that NMPs are a major source of trunk tissues. This review describes the identification and characterization of NMPs across multiple species. We also discuss key cellular and molecular steps for generating neural and mesodermal cells for building up the elongating trunk tissue.
Helium mass in the envelope is one of the most important properties in progenitors of type Ib/c supernovae (SNe Ib/c), since SN Ib/c progenitors are distinguished by the presence of He I lines. However, previous progenitor models do not reproduce the required He mass limit($M_{He}$ < $0.14M_{\odot}$) suggested by a spectroscopic analysis of SN Ib/c. In this work, we investigated the effect of overshooting on the evolution of pure helium stars, focusing on the final He mass in the envelope, $M_{He,f}$. We used the MESA code to calculate single helium star models with the initial masses of $M_{init}=5{\sim}30M_{\odot}$, Z=0.02, 0.04 and overshooting parameters of $f_{ov}=0{\sim}0.4$. The final He mass $M_{He,f}$ decreases as $f_{ov}$ increases, due to larger burning core compared to weak overshooting models. Dependence of the final mass $M_{He,f}$ on overshooting is strongest for models with $M_{init}=7{\sim}10M_{\odot}$, and this effect originates from accelerated mass loss during transition between WNE and WC/O phase. However, $M_{He,f}$ exceeds $0.27M_{\odot}$ for all models, which still doesn't meet the criteria of $M_{He}$ < $0.14M_{\odot}$. This implies that mass loss during the post helium burning phase must be enhanced dramatically compared to what the standard models predict.
Dental follicle is the mesenchymal tissue which surrounds developing tooth germ. During tooth root development, periodontal components such as cementum, periodontal ligament and alveolar bone are considered to be created by progenitors present in the dental follicle. However, little is known about these progenitors. Previously we observed that cultured bovine dental follicle cells (BDFC) contained putative cementoblast progenitors. To further analyze the biology of these cells, we have attempted to immortalize BDFC by expression of the polycomb group protein Bmi-1 and human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT). The BDFC expressing Bmi-1 and hTERT showed extended life span by 90 population doublings more than normal BDFC, and still contained cells with potential to differentiate into cementoblasts upon implantation into immunodeficiency mice. Among them, we established a clonal cell line designated as BCPb8, which formed cemetum-like mineralized tissue reactive to anti-cementum specific monoclonal antibody, 3G9, and expressed mRNA for bone sialoprotein, osteocalcin, osteopontin and type I collagen upon implantation. Thus with the combination of hTERT and Bmi-1, we succeeded in immortalization of cementoblast progenitor in BDFC without affecting differentiation potential. The BCPb8 progenitor cell line could be a useful tool not only to study cementogenesis but also to develop regeneration therapy for periodontitis.
We investigate the observational properties of Wolf-Rayet stars, suggest the constraint of their mass-loss rate and apply our results to the observed progenitor candidates of Type Ib/Ic supernovae (iPTF13bvn and SN 2017ein). For this purpose, we adopt the WR star models with various mass-loss rates and wind terminal velocities. We obtain the high resolution spectra of those models at the pre-supernova phase using the radiative transfer code CMFGEN. We verify the optically faint property of SN Ic progenitors and show that the optical faintness is mainly originated by the high effective temperature at the photosphere. We also show that a simple analytic model for WR winds using a constant opacity can roughly predict the photospheric parameters. We show that the change of the mass-loss rate and the terminal wind velocity critically affects the optical luminosity. We find the optical luminosities of SN Ic progenitor models with our fiducial mass-loss rate prescription are fainter than the detection limits. We also suggest the mass-loss rate of WR stars may not exceed 2 times of our fiducial value by comparing our predictions with the detection limit of SN Ib/Ic progenitors. The directly observed progenitor candidate of iPTF13bvn can be explained by our SN Ib progenitor models. We find that the SN 2017ein progenitor candidate is too bright and too blue to be a SN Ic progenitor.
