  • In this paper, we propose a simulator for testing of the Navigation Control System(NCS) in Bimodal-tram. NCS uses values of all sorts of sensors installed in vehicle to decide current position, and to control speed and steering of vehicle to go to a next position. Major functions of simulator are input processing of the driver and generation of virtual sensor data and driving profile(navigation path, magnetic information), and the NCS function. Virtual sensor data is generated according to output data from the NCS, driving profile and input processing of the driver, and monitoring systems is operated separatedly to confirm of NCS operation. This paper discusses about the implementation of the simulator, and analyzes and evaluates the simulation results.

  • This study extends the Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) application to delineate the saturated zones in shallow sediment and evaluate the groundwater flow in both downward and upward directions. Dry, partially and fully saturated zones and water level in the subsurface can be recognized from this study. High resolution seepage velocity in vertical direction was estimated from the temperature data in the fully saturated zone. By a single profile, water level can be detected and seepage velocity in saturated zone can be estimated. Furthermore, thermal gradient analysis serves as a new technique to verify unsaturated and saturated zones in the subsurface. The vertical seepage velocity distribution in the recognized saturated zone is then analyzed with improvement of Bredehoeft and Papaopulos' model. This new approach provides promising potential in real-time monitoring of groundwater movement.

  • A low-profile flow sensor has been designed, fabricated, and characterized to demonstrate the feasibility for monitoring hemodynamics in cerebral aneurysm. The prototype device is composed of three micro-membranes ($500-{\mu}m$-thick polyurethane film with $6-{\mu}m$-thick layers of nitinol above and below). A novel super-hydrophilic surface treatment offers excellent hemocompatibility for the thin nitinol electrode. A computational study of the deformable mechanics optimizes the design of the flow sensor and the analysis of computational fluid dynamics estimates the flow and pressure profiles within the simulated aneurysm sac. Experimental studies demonstrate the feasibility of the device to monitor intra-aneurysmal hemodynamics in a blood vessel. The mechanical compression test shows the linear relationship between the applied force and the measured capacitance change. Analytical calculation of the resonant frequency shift due to the compression force agrees well with the experimental results. The results have the potential to address important unmet needs in wireless monitoring of intra-aneurysm hemodynamic quiescence.

  • This paper is focused on a relationship between the noise and vibration of a wheelset and the railway irregularity of a high speed railway using a time-varying frequency transform for a preliminary research of the railway condition monitoring by an in-service high-speed railway vehicle. Generally, the monitoring has been performed by a special railway inspection vehicle or industrial engineers for railway maintenance. However, they have been limited at night due to the in-service high-speed railway vehicles, and too slow to monitor all of the section. To solve this problem, the monitoring should be performed by an in-service high-speed railway vehicle. For the research, the noise and vibration of a wheelset are utilized, because they are closely related to the railway condition. They are measured by using some microphones and accelerometers, and stored in an on-board data acquisition system. The signals are post-processed by a time-varying frequency analysis and compared with the result of a railway geometry and profile measurement system. From the comparison, it is able to observe the relationship between the noise and vibration of a wheelset and the irregularity of a high-speed railway. Also, some distinct frequency components are observed, which are not observed in the railway geometry and profile.

  • Inspection and shape measurement of three-dimensional objects are widely needed in industries for quality monitoring and control. A number of visual or optical technologies have been successfully applied to measure three dimensional surfaces. Especially, the shape measurement using an interferometric principle becomes a successful methodology. However, those conventional interferometric methods to measure surface profile have an inherent shortcoming, namely 2∏ ambiguity problem. The problem inevitably happens when the object to be measured has discontinuous shape due to the repetition of interferometric signal with phase period of 2∏. Therefore, in this paper, we choose as a shape measuring method, ...

  • As a core area of the new computing paradigm, the Ubiquitous Sensor Network Technology utilizes a wireless sensor networking which can be applied to the Context Information Monitoring System. When the technology is used in a poor user-environment for monitoring purposes, it can cost-effectively gather the context data on real-time basis, analyze the information gathered, effectively response to the user situation, and execute orders to create environmental factors desired by the user. This study structures a system able to monitor information in regards to a user-environment based on wireless-node sensor technology coupled with the Ubiquitous Sensor Network Technology. In this paper, the protocol in which it manages the wireless sensor network as the zone based by using the management protocol standardized at the smart home with a profile is proposed. The proposed system requires a minimal collection of data without continuous monitoring. Monitoring periodically, it can sense the user-environment more efficiently than the existing monitoring technologies based on the wire-communication technology.

  • The response of IPTG induction was investigated through the monitoring of the alkali consumption rate and buffer capacity during the cultivation of recombinant E. coli BL21 (DE3) harboring the plasmid pRSET-LacZ under the control of lac promoter. The rate of alkali consumption increased along with cell growth, but declined suddenly after approximately 0.2 h of IPTG induction. The buffer capacity also declined after 0.9 h of IPTG induction. The profile of buffer capacity seems to correlate with the level of acetate production. The IPTG response was monitored only when introduced into the mid-exponential phase of bacterial cell growth. The minimum concentration of IPTG for induction, which was found out to be 0.1 mM, can also be monitored on-line and in-situ. Therefore, the on-line monitoring of alkali consumption rate and buffer capacity can be an indicator of the metabolic shift initiated by IPTG supplement, as well as for the physiological state of cell growth.

  • Consumables used in Chemical Mechanical Polishing (CMP) have been played important role to improve quality and productivity. Since the properties of consumables constantly change with various reasons, such as shelf time, manufactured time, lot to lot variation from supplier and so on, CMP results are not constant during the process. Also, CMP process results are affected by multiple sources from wafer, conditioner, pad and slurry. Therefore, multiple sensing systems are required to monitor CMP process variation. In this paper, the authors focus on development of monitoring system for CMP process which consist of force, temperature and displacement sensor to measure the signal from CMP process. With monitoring systems mentioned above, complex CMP phenomena can be investigated more clearly.

  • To assist developing robust multithreaded software, we develop a thread monitoring system for multithreaded Java programs, which can trace or monitor running threads and synchronization. We design a monitoring system which has options to select interesting threads and synchronizations. Using this tool, programmers can monitor only interesting threads and synchronization in more details by selecting options. It also provides profile information after execution, which summarizes behavior of running threads and synchronizations during execution. We implement the system based on code inlining, and presents some experimental results.

  • Coverage-based software reliability growth models (SRGMs) have been developed and successfully applied in practice. Performance of a coverage-based SRG M depends on the coverage function employed by the SRGM. When the coverage function represents the coverage growth behavior well irrespective of type of the testing profile the corresponding coverage-based SRGM is expected to be widely applicable. This paper first conducts a study of selecting the most representative coverage functions among the available coverage functions. Then their performances are empirically evaluated and compared. The result provides a foundation for developing widely applicable coverage-based SRGMs and monitoring the progress of a testing process.
