Factors Influencing Nursing Professional Value of Nursing Students (간호대학생의 간호전문직관 영향요인)

  • The purpose of this study was to find out a correlation of clinical nurse's character, clinical practice stress, stress coping and factor affecting nursing professional value on nursing students in Korea, and to use it as a basic data in developing nursing professional value promotion programs for nursing students. The study was composed of 145 students who were studying in fourth year student at colleges. Data were collected from May to June, 2019. Data analysis included an independent t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple regression using the SPSS program. As a result of this study, nursing professional value of those was significantly correlated with clinical nurse's character, clinical practice stress and stress coping. In a regression analysis, nursing professional value accounted for 38.2%(F=43.973, p=.000), of the variance of clinical nurse's character and stress coping. The most significant factor affection the success of nursing professional value was stress coping(β=.508, p=.000). The result of the study indicates the importance of developing clinical nurse's character and applying variety stress coping method for positive nursing professional value of nursing students.

Nurse Image Perceived by Elementary and Middle School Students (초등학생과 중학생의 간호사에 대한 이미지 비교)

  • Purpose: This study was to investigate the image of nurse perceives by students of elementary and middle schools in Seoul, Korea. Methods: The data were collected through questionnaire survey on 860 students. The survey was performed during May to Jun. 2003. The nurse image was analyzed through the instrument conceived by Il-Sim, Yang(1998) on the basis of four dimensions; traditional, social, professional and personal. The collected data analyzed using SPSS 11.0 with frequency, mean, standard deviation and t-test. Results: The results of this study were as follows. 1. There was a significant difference in the nurse's image between elementary and middle school students(p=.000), and the elementary students had more positive image. 2. The nurse's image of elementary school students had more positive than middle school students in traditional(p=.000), social(p=.000), professional(p=.000) and personal dimension(p=.015). In elementary school students, score of nurse's image was the highest in personal dimension, followed by traditional, professional and social in order. In middle school students, score of nurse's image was the highest in personal dimension, followed by professional, traditional and social in order. 3. The difference of nurse's image not showed statistical significance in sex, religion, experience of hospitalization(self), experience of hospitalization (family), nurses in family by general characteristics. Conclusion: As a result, elementary school student had more positive nurse's image than middle school student in all the aspects. But as they grow old, it changed negative. It is required to develop public information or education fit with student's age to image making by broadcasting and to improve the image nurses themselves.

A Study on the Image of Nurses and the Professional Self-Concept Perceived by Nursing Students (간호대학생의 전문직 자아개념과 간호사에 대한 이미지)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the image of nurses and the professional self-concept perceived by nursing students. Method: The subjects included were 93 students. The research tool was the Professional Self-Concept of Nurses Instrument(PSCNI) by Arthur and Image of Nurses by Yang. Result: 1. The professional self-concept consisted of 4 factors : flexibility, satisfaction, competence, empathy. 2. The image of nurse consisted of 4 factors : official image, maternal image, professional image. unfavorable image. 3. The average item score of PSCNI was $2.94{\pm}30$. 4. The average item score of nurse' image was $3.63{\pm}46$ 5. The Professional self-concept of nurses(p=.0001) and image of nurses(p=.001) was found to significantly according to satisfaction for major. 6. The correlation between professional self-concept and image of nurses revealed correlation of r=.315(p=.004). Conclusion: There was a association between professional self concept of nurses, image of nurses and satisfaction for major. Therefore it is required to develop education program and strategy that helps establish satisfaction for major so that nursing students can experience firm professional self concept and positive image of nursing.

A Study on Change of Nurse Image After Hospitalization Experience (입원경험 전.후의 간호사 이미지)

  • This study analyzed change of nurse image after hospitalization experience. The data were collected though questionnaire survey on 87 patients, who were, for the first time, hospitalized for 5~7 days at five general hospitals in J city. The survey was performed during July 3~August 2, 2000. The nurse image was analyzed through the instrument conceived by Il-Sim Yang(1998) on the basis of four dimensions ; traditional, social, professional and personal. The collected data were processed through SPSS/WIN to examine t-test, ANOVA and paired t-test. The study results were summarized as follows ; 1. Before hospitalization, patients' score of nurse image was the highest in professional dimension, followed by personal, traditional and social in order. 2. The nurse image before hospitalization showed statistically significant differences in age(p=.009), sex(p=.027) and marital status(p=.000). 3. After hospitalization experience, the score of nurse image was the highest in personal dimension, followed by professional, traditional and social one. 4. The nurse image after hospitalization showed statistically significant differences in marital status(p=.002) only. 5. The difference of nurse image before and after hospitalization experience showed statistical significance in traditional (p=.007) and social (p=.037) dimensions. 6. The score of nurse image was improved in all dimensions after hospitalization experience. In conclusion, hospitalization experience helps improve the nurse image. Therefore, for better improvement of nurse image, it is necessary for nurses to offer their best care to hospitalized patients. In addition, efforts should be made to improve the social image of nurse, which showed lowest score.

Study on Value Conceptions in fundamentals of Nursing (임상간호 가치관에 관한 일 조사연구)

  • This study was designed to investigate differences in some aspects of value conceptions in fundamentals of nursing functions between nursing service personnel and nurse-educators. The purpose of the study was to identify the difference of value conceptions between the hospital nurses and school instructors, to contribute as a reference in strengthening the educational program in establishing nay hinder professional growth. The questionaries of this study were focused in the following aspects: 1) establishment of nursing service management system, 2) strengthening of the professionalization of nursing service, 3) hindrance in accomplishment of independent nursing functions, 4) communication skills in nurse-patient relationship, 5) activities directly related to nursing care planning, 6) communication skills in nurse-doctor relationship, 7) attitude towards taking responsibilities for patient- centered nursing approach, and 8) nursing educational approach towards preparation of professional competence in practicing independent nursing functions. 265 graduate nurses from 14 general hospitals and 88 nursing instructors from 18 schools, collegiate and diploma, were sampled. The main findings of the study were as follows; 1. Both groups responded highly in the lack of public recognition of nursing profession and hospital administrators support in establishment of nursing service management system. Further investigation is needed to define some relationship between the intrinsic and extrinsic factors which might give influence to the professional development. 2. while hospital nursing personnel responded on environmental pressure such as a heavy nursing load as the factor giving hindrance to independent nursing functions, the nurse educators responded highly on lack of nursing competence of individual nurses. An emphasis should be placed on the development of nursing interaction through professional education. If the professional model is not well established, nursing function will be limited to medical assistance. 3. 3. The patient-centered approach for nurse-patient communication had given positive respond for both group, tut lacks in team concept in problem solving process. There exist a social distance between nurses and other professional co-workers in the hospital hierarchy. 4. It was indicated that, as an intrinsic factor in the development of nursing service and nursing education, building up a philosophical basis is an utmost importance. This question is opened for further and extensive study to clarify whether existence of philosophical absence or philosophical stasis in nursing profession hinders the development.

Influence of nurse's image and satisfaction with the nursing major on their career identity: The mediating effect of professional self-concept (간호대학생의 간호사 이미지 및 전공 만족도가 진로정체감에 미치는 영향: 전문직 자아개념의 매개효과)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify the mediating effect of professional self-concept on the relationship between nurse's image and career identity, and between satisfaction with the nursing major and the career identity of nursing students. Methods: This study utilized a descriptive methodology, and 205 nursing students attending three universities in Busan Metropolitan City participated in it. Data were collected from self-reported questionnaires between March 26 and April 30, 2022. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, an independent t-test, analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and simple and multiple regression using the IBM SPSS 22.0 program and Sobel test. Results: The mean score of career identity was 2.92±0.57 out of a possible 4. Career identity showed a significantly positive correlation with nurse's image (r=.32, p<.001), satisfaction with major (r=.47, p<.001), and professional self-concept (r=.32, p<.001). Additionally, professional self-concept had a partial mediating effect on the relationship between nurse's image (Z=2.44, p<.001), satisfaction with major (Z=2.35, p<.001), and career identity. Conclusion: The results of the study show professional self-concept had a mediating effect on the relationship between nurse's image, satisfaction with the nursing major, and career identity. Based on the study's results, career identity education programs for nursing students need to include nursing image, satisfaction with major, and professional self-concept.

Nurse's Perception of Technological Development and Professional Self-Concept (의료기술발달에 대한 간호사의 지각과 전문직 자아개념)

  • This study was conducted to explore the nurse's perception of technological development and professional self-concept. The research subjects were 560 clinical nurses in Korea, who worked the general hospitals in Seoul, Kyeonggi, and the Kangwon province. Data sampling was done for the month, of December. 1997. The research tool consisted of 82 items questionnaires which were demographic data, TIQ, PSCNI. The research findings were as follows: 1. Nurses perceived the technological development as slightly positive (Mean =48.8). Also, nurses saw that the fastest developing technological nursing unit was the cardiac care unit, while the lowest technological developing nursing unit was the psychiatric unit. 2. The view of technological development was found to be significantly different according to religion (P=.0109), marital status (P=.0431), and the practical setting (P=.0048). Professional self concept was significantly different according to age (P=.0001), religion (P=.0001), education (P=.0007), marital status (P=.0000), career (P=.0001), and position (P=.0000). 3. The relationship between a nurse's perception of technological development and professional self-concept was highly correlated(r=.26, P=.0001). In the results of the multiple regression, the factors influencing professional self-concept were career, the nurse's perception of technological development, the level of technological development in nursing unit, and education. All these parameters showed the explaining power of 15.4% of the professional self-concept. In conclusion, nurses recognized the technological development was related to the professional self-concept. This study shed light on the meaning of technological development and vision of the nursing profession. Inservice education program should be developed to help the adaptability to technological development and conduct the qualitative research to explore the world of technological development which the nurses are experiencing in nursing.

Effects of Nursing Students' Nurse Image and Professional Self Concept on Career Search Behavior (간호대학생의 간호사이미지, 전문직자아개념이 진로탐색행동에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the factors that influence the nursing students' nurse image and professional self-concept on career exploration. This study was accomplished on 153 students in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades of the Department of Nursing Science at a college in area Y, and data were collected from July 1 to August 31, 2020 using a structured questionnaire. Measurement tools consisted of nurse image, professional self-concept, and career exploration behavior. Data processing was performed using the SPSS 22.0 program where general characteristics were analyzed by t-test, ANONA and post examination tests by Scheffe's test, using mean score, standard deviation, Pearson's correlation, and stepwise multiple regression. Nursing students' nurse image, professional self-concept, and career exploration behavior were all found to have significant positive correlations, and the most influential variable was professional self-concept. As for the total explanatory power of these variables, model 2 showed 25% explanatory power, which was increased by 2% compared to model 1. Based on this result, it is necessary to develop education and a career exploration action program which can improve the nurse image and professional self-concept.

A Study on the Demand for Nurse Anesthetists in Korea (우리나라 종합병원과 일반병원의 마취 전문간호사 수요분석)

  • Purpose: This descriptive study was conducted to project the number of nurse anesthetists needed in hospital settings, up to the year 2015. Method: Necessary data and information were collected from various funded reports, professional literature, web sites and personal visits to national and private institutions. The number of nurse anesthetists needed was projected after considering the total number of cases requiring anesthesia including deliveries, workload ratio for caesarean section to total number of deliveries, and percent of deliveries requiring and anesthesia. Result: The projected number of nurse anesthetists needed for hospital settings are as follows: 1. The number of registered anesthesia personnel in Korea in 2002 was 2,481 anesthesiologists and 543 nurse anesthetists but only 60% of anesthesiologists and 30% of nurse anesthetists (147) were actually practicing in the field of surgery. 2. By the year 2015, the total number of projected nurse anesthetists needed in hospital settings will be between 214 and 265. Conclusion: In order to match the supply to the need, the professional organizations should direct efforts towards enacting legislation. Educational systems should identify strategies to initiating an adequate number of nurse anesthetist programs at the master's level as well as standardizing curriculums across programs.
