A manufacturability measurement for design for manufacturing in net shape process

  • The objective of this research is to develop a manufacturability measurement model for process and material screening. The process and material screening is the key requirement for implementing the Design for Manufacturability (Concurrent Engineering). A computerized system realizing this model then is developed to aid designers. Identification of the key factors which influence technical manufacturability, decision variables and their characteristics, conceptual framework for implementing the model are suggested. Manufacturability measure for quantifying the consistency of between the product requirements and the manufacturing capability is important contribution of this research. The focus is on net shape manufacturing process such as diecasting, forging, metal forming and injection molding.

철도차량 현수장치의 식스시그마 강건 설계 (Six Sigma Robust Design for Railway Vehicle Suspension)

  • The spring constants of primary suspensions for a railway vehicle are optimized by a robust design process, in which the response surface models(RSMs) of their dynamic responses are constructed via the design of experiment(DOE). The robust design process requires an intensive computation to evaluate exactly a probabilistic feasibility for the robustness of dynamic responses with their probabilistic variances for the railway vehicle. In order to overcome the computational process, the process capability index $C_{pk}$ is introduced which enables not only to show the mean value and the scattering of the product quality to a certain extent, but also to normalize the objective functions irrespective of various different dimensions. This robust design, consequently, becomes to optimize the $C_{pk}$ subjected to constraints, i.e. 2, satisfying six sigma. The proposed method shows not only an improvement of some $C_{pk}$ violating the constraints obtained by the conventional optimization, but also a significant decrease of the variance of the $C_{pk}$.

3차원 CAD 시스템을 이용한 설계환경 구축 및 설계자동화에 대한 연구 (A Study on Construction of Design Environment and Design Automation Using 3D CAD System)

  • In order to survive worldwide competition, today's industries are experiencing strong pressure to introduce higher quality products with lower cost and shorter lead-time. Therefore, the role of design in the process of product development is increasing in significance. In this research, two methods for improving the design capability are proposed: construction of design environment and design automation using 3D CAD system. The designers and design process are the core of product design using 3D CAD system. In order to maximize the design performance, construction of the design environment including selection of a suitable system, designer training for best use of the system, establishment of an efficient design process, and stabilization of the environment are required. A method is suggested to construct design environment by systematizing the contents of the projects and consulting experiences carried out for various categories of business such as electronic devices, motorcycles, electricity parts, sanitary wares, injection molds, and die casing molds. Design automation helps reduce tedious and time-consuming jobs, simplify complicated and error-prone modeling and drawing works to shorten the lead time and improve the product quality. To develop a design automation system, understanding the process and the related knowledge on design are very important before implementing the system using API provided by 3D CAD system. In this research, an eight-step procedure is proposed for the development of a design automation system. These eight steps are analysis of needs, determination of specification, verification of specification using 3D CAD system, inspection of related API functions, programming, field test, application in practice, and maintenance. A case study in which five design automation systems in the design of turbine generators using the proposed method is introduced in detail. These systems play important roles in the generation of various output items including 3D models, drafts, material information, and NC data. The case study shows how effectively the design time is reduced and the quality improved using those systems.

휴대폰 후면 커버의 공정시간 단축에 따른 치수 편차의 최적화에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Optimization of the Dimensional Deviation due to the Shortening of the Cycle Time for Rear Cover of Mobile Phone)

  • In this study, we investigated the optimization of process conditions by using the Six Sigma process, design of experiment (DOE) method and response surface method (RSM) to resolve dimensional deviation and appearance problems arising from the shortened process time of the mobile phone rear cover. The analysis of the trivial many was performed by 2-sample T-test and cooling time, and mold temperature and packing pressure were selected as the vital fews affecting the overall width of the product. The optimal conditions of the process were then studied using the DOE and the RSM. We analyzed the improvement effects by applying the selected optimal conditions to the production process and the results showed that the difference between the mean value and target value of the overall width stood at 0.01 mm, an improvement of 88.89% compared to current process that fell within the range of standard dimension. The short-term process capability stood at $4.77{\sigma}$, which implied an excellent technology level despite a decrease by $0.22{\sigma}$ compared to the current process. The difference in process capability decreased by $2.44{\sigma}$ to $0.41{\sigma}$, showing a significant improvement in management capability. Ultimately, the process time of the product was shortened from 18.3 seconds in the current process to 13.65 seconds, resulting in a 34.07% improvement in production yield.

  • The quality of a precision product, in genera, relies on the accuracy and precision of its manufacturing and inspection process. In many cases, the level of precision in the manufacturing and inspection system is also dependent on the positioning capability of tool with respect to the workpiece in the process. Recently the positioning accuracy level employed for some of precision product has reached the level of submicron and long range of motion is required. 타구치 로버스트 계획에서 응용모형의 개발 (Development of Application Models Based on the Robust Design)

  • This study develops three new models that are practically applicable to three stages of Taguchi's robust design, which includes system design, parameter design and tolerance design. In system design, the Multiple Loss Function Analysis(MLFA) and Overall Loss Index(OLI) which reflect upon weight of characteristics and importance of specification are developed. Moreover parameter design presents Process Capability Index(PCI), $C_{PUK}$ and $C_{PLK}$, in order to segregate Signal-To-Noise Ratio(SNR) into accuracy and precision for an evaluation of relative comparison. In addition, tolerance design presents the new model of allowance computation for assembled product which is primarily derived from safety margin(SM) considering functional limit and specification. The guideline of those three new models, which include systematic charts and applicable illustrations, offers convenience for practitioners in the field. Hence, the practical applications could be made with the steps of robust designs such as system design, parameter design and specification allowance design.

제품 디자인의 파급효과와 품질경쟁력의 결정요인에 관한 연구 (A Study on a Effect of Product Design and a Primary factor of Qualify Competitiveness)

  • 본 연구의 분석목표는 제품 디자인의 결정요인을 추정하고 품질경쟁력, 제품 신뢰성, 고객충성에 대한 제품 디자인의 파급효과를 실증적으로 분석함으로써 디자인 경영이론에 유용한 시사점을 도출하는 것이다. 상기한 실증적 분석을 위하여, 한국 제조업 부문의 400개 표본기업에 대한 설문조사(2003년 8월${\sim}$10월)를 통하여 관련 측정변수들을 추출하였다. 본 연구의 분석결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 제품 디자인의 유의적 결정요인은 연구개발력 수준, 연구개발투자 수준, 혁신활동 수준(5S, TQM, 6Sigma 운동, QC 등)으로 추정되었다. 이 분석결과는 제품 디자인과 제품 개발을 동시적 엔지니어링(CE: concurrent engineering) 개념으로 파악하고 이들의 성과를 평가하기 위한 시스템관련 원리(system-related principle)와 행렬관련 원리(matrix-related principle)로써 서술한 Pawar and Driva(1999)를 실증적으로 뒷받침한다. 둘째, 제품 디자인의 파급효과는 제품 디자인${\rightarrow}$품질경쟁력${\rightarrow}$고객만족${\rightarrow}$고객충성의 인과관계로 나타나는 것으로 추정되었다. 즉, 제품 디자인은 고객만족을 직접적으로 유발하는 것이 아니라 품질경쟁력을 경유하여 간접적으로 고객만족을 유도한다는 것이다. 이 분석결과는 디자인 경영이 통합된 제품 품질의 중요한 결정인자라고 분석한 Flynn et al(1994), Ahire et al.(1996), Ahire and Dreyfus(2000) 등을 실증적으로 뒷받침한다. 일반적으로 제품 디자인의 접근방법으로써 3가지 즉 (1) 제품 개발자(엔지니어, 기술개발담당자, 품질관리팀)를 중심으로 하는 QFD(quality function development)의 접근방법, (2) 마케팅 담당자를 중심으로 하는 컨조인트 분석(conjoint analysis), (3) 상기의 2가지 접근방법의 상호보완적 및 동시적 결합 및 피드백의 주장(Pullman, Moore and Wardell, 2002)을 들 수 있다. 그러나 본 연구의 실증적 분석결과에는 품질경쟁력이 제품 디자인과 고객만족사이에 교량적 역할을 담당한다. 이 분석결과는 제품 디자인에 대한 품질경쟁력의 2가지 접근방법(QFD의 접근방법과 컨조인트 분석)의 조화를 이룰 수 있는 이론적 기초가 될 수 있다. 즉, 제품디자인의 결정요인 분석결과는 QFD의 접근방법에, 제품 디자인 파급효과 분석결과는 컨조인트 분석에 각각 보완적 기여를 할 수 있다. 이와 동시에, 실증적 분석결과는 Ettlie(1997)의 디자인 통합(DI) 이론에 대한 실증적 기반을 제공할 수 있다. 마지막으로, 성공적인 디자인 경영(DM)을 위해서는 최고 경영자의 지원뿐만 아니라 부처 간 의사소통의 장애요인을 제거하고 CFT(cross-functional team)를 운영함으로써 동시적 엔지니어링(CE) 및 제품 및 공정 디자인의 개발이 제품 개발의 속도를 가속화하고 디자인 품질을 높이며 시장 성공을 보증할 수 있도록 해야 한다.

항공기 공지통신 무전기 성능개량을 위한 자동 TOD 연동방안 연구 (The Study of Automatic TOD Synchronization for Air-Ground Radio Performance Improving in Legacy Aircraft)

  • In this paper, we proposed an automatic TOD synchronization and verification method for improving the performance of air-to-ground radio(hereafter SATURN) of legacy aircraft. In order to automatically synchronize TOD with SATURN radio, it is proposed to modify the GPS antenna installed in the existing aircraft according to the minimum operating performance standard. In addition, test methods and results are presented to verify the TOD information generation capability before and after the GPS antenna modifying. It is expected that the automatic TOD synchronization method proposed in this paper can be applied to the SATURN performance improvement design.

기업활용수준을 반영한 기술경영 연구방법론 교과도출을 위한 사전연구 (A Preliminary Study for Deriving Subjects of MOT Method Based on the Utilization Status in Korea Enterprises)

  • This study focus on what methods of MOT are needed and utilized to solve a technical problem in the MOT leading company. We first classified the MOT methods by project life cycle and R&D job quality based on the several discussion with working group. In order to study, the survey was carried out by 168 experts working on MOT practices. Our main research findings are as follows. The level of utilized MOT methods was above average because MOT sector was beginning to represent an increasing share of total R&D business. But the satisfaction level on the MOT majors was below average. The more utilized MOT methods in practices were 'environment analysis and opportunity research,' 'business feasibility,' 'roadmapping,' 'portfolio,' 'technology tree,' 'scheduling,' 'risk management,' 'six sigma,' 'design of experiment,' 'quality control,' 'cost analysis' etc. And the subjects of product realization process were also needed to MOT practice such as 'design for reliability,' 'design for cost,' 'design for performance,' 'design for safety' deeply involved to product quality. Finally, the capability requested to University students were 'problem define and solving,' 'technology planning and strategy,' 'creative thinking.'

선박해양구조물의 제품수명주기 내 유지보수 정보 획득을 위한 PEID에 관한 연구 (Development of PEID for Acquiring Maintenance Information during Product Lifecycle of Marine Vessels)

  • The product lifecycle of a marine vessel can be classified into the design-production, operation-maintenance, and disposal phases. During the operation and maintenance phase, status data should be gathered from the major machinery and instruments installed on the marine vessel in order to perform efficient maintenance work. Although a PLM (product lifecycle management) system can manage the product information during the design and assembly stage, a PLM based on asset management technology is more appropriate for product information management during the operation stage. Product embedded information devices (PEIDs) are suggested for gathering real-time maintenance information during the operation and maintenance lifecycle. A PEID allows PLM to provide the capability of offering active information exchange between the lifecycle management system and equipment. This study designed a PEID to effectively obtain information and interact with a PLM system. It consists of sensors, wireless communication, and a micro-processor, which allow it to accumulate status data on the PLM system. The embedded information device and PLM enable the seamless information flow, tracking, and updating of MRO (maintenance repair and overhaul) information for a product throughout the middle of the product lifecycle.
