Consumer Misperceptions, Product Liability Law and Product Safety

  • This paper considered the impact of changing the product liability rule from consumer to producer liability on product safety under asymmetric information. In particular, it has been attempted to remove several constraints on antecedent studies. The main results of the study are as follows: under the misperception of the risk on a product, consumers may underestimate the probability of product failure. In this case, the accident rate can be lowered under the producer's liability rule. However, even under the asymmetric information, a consumer's estimation on the probability may be converged with the expected risk level, which could be called the 'rational expectation.' In this situation the probability of product failure can be lowered under the strict liability with contributory negligence. Additionally, it is possible to reduce the probability of product failure when a legal rule that imposes liability on cheapest cost avoider is admitted.

Growth and Chemical Components of Reciprocally Grafted Tobacco Cultivars between Hyangchio and L. A. Burley 21 (향초와 L. A. Burley 21의 상호접목이 담배의 생육 및 화학적 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • To investigate the effect of reciprocal grafting between Hyangchio (H) and L. A. Burley 21 (L.A), one a higher producer of nicotine and low yield, the other, a low producer of nicotine and high yield, growth of various parts of each variety and chemical constituents of these parts were evaluated. The results were as follows : The growth of H/H graft was depressed when compared to hyangchio and H/L. A. and L. A. Burley 21 showed most vigorous growth plants having L. A. Burley 21 top. The amount of total alkaloids were low in leaves and stems of plants having L. A. Burley 21 roots (L. A., L. A./L. A., H/L. A.). Plants having Hyangchio roots (H, L. A./H) were high in total alkaloids. The contents of reducing sugar were high in plant having Hyangchio top compared to L. A. Burley 21 tops, but there were not diffences in contents of ether extracts among all treatments.

Screening and Characterization of a Novel Erythritol-producing Microorganism, Moniliella suaveloens var. nigra (새로운 에리스리톨 생산균주인 Moniliella suaveolens var. nigra의 탐색 및 특성)

  • Erythritol is a four-carbon sugar alcohol with a low calorific value and non-cariogenicity. Erythritol is a new functional sweetener which can be used as sugar alternative. Erytheitol dose not cause discomfort such as diarrhoea and flatulence upon ingestion. The purpose of this study is to develope a novel process of erythritol economically in a large scale. To obtain a high erythritol producer, we have screened 3500 colonies from molasses, honey and honey combs. We have selected 40 erythritol-producing microorganisms, one of which yields 140g/L erythritol in 40% glucose medium. We have tested this strain in 5L fermentor to examine the fermentation characteristics. Results of fermentation show that the erythritol production was about 1.4g/L$.$hr in 400g/L glucose media with a 42% conversion. Further improvements require mutation for a higher producer, process optimization to reduce glycerol, and suppression of excessive foaming.

Cloning, Sequencing and Expression of dTDP-D-Glucose 4,6-Dehydratase Gene from Streptomyces antibioticus $T\ddot{u}99$, a Producer of Chlorothricin

  • DNA fragments, homologous to the dTDP-D-glucose 4,6-dehydratase gene, obtained from the genomic DNA of Streptomyces antibioticus $T\ddot{u}99$, a producer of the unusual macrolide antibiotic chlorothricin, were cloned and sequenced. This dehydratase gene was designated as oxil. The coding region of the oxil gene is composed of 987 bp, and analysis of the DNA sequence data reveals sequences for the gene products of 329 amino acids (molecular weight of 36,037). The deduced amino acids are 59% identical to the StrE, dTDP-D-glucose 4,6-dehydratase from the streptomycin pathway. The oxil's function was examined by expressing it in E. coli using the T7 RNA polymerase/promoter system (pRSET) to produce an active fusion protein including a his tag. This enzyme shows specificity of substrate, specific only to dTDP-D-glucose.
