  • The method of die-face design based on the CAE platform for automobile panels can fast modify the die addendum. In contrast with the process of the die-face design based on the CAD platform, there are some special steps for the die-face design based on the CAE platform. The most obvious difference is that the auto-body part contour needs smoothing arlier than the design of addendum surfaces does. It is helpful to improve the design quality of addendum surface. In spite of extensive researches on the smoothing technique, here is still dearth of the published solutions about smoothing the part contour with additional surface. This paper attempts to analyze the difficulties and provides practical solutions. Main results include the algorithm to calculate the segments needing to be smoothed on boundary, the strategy to create the smoothing curve and the procedure of surface generation. The relevant function modules for parametric design are developed. A few examples and suggestions for future work conclude the paper.

  • This study intends to reduce forming load by adding die rotation to flange-upsetting process. Materials arc formed by the compression and rotational torque which are accrued from rotation of the lower die accompanied by axial compression of the punch. For the theoretic analysis of flange-upsetting process using rotation die, slab method was used. Furthermore, for the verification of the theoretic analysis results, FEM simulation using DEFORM 3D a commercial software was done, and through the model material experiment using Prasticine, the results were compared and reviewed. Flange-upsetting process using rotation die shows reduced forming load compared with process without die rotation and demonstrates uniform distribution of strain. And as for the effect of the reduction of forming load, the less the aspect ratio(h0/d0) and the greater friction coefficient, the greater effect is. With increase in die rotation velocity, the effect of forming load reduction also increases little by little, but its effect on forming load reduction is very negligible compared with other forming parameters. Theoretic analysis results and simulation results coincided pretty well. The flange-upsetting process using die rotation are evaluated as useful process that can produce reduction of forming load and uniform strain.

  • A split-die design for the cold forging of symmetric parts such as those having a hexagonal cross-section is presented in this paper. Parts with a hexagonal cross-section, such as bolt heads and nuts, should be forged with a die that has a hexagonal-shaped hole. A split type die is required to mitigate the buildup of stress concentrations located at the corners of the hexagonal hole. Generally, the insert of a hexagonal die is made by cutting each corner of a cylinder using a hexagonal hole and then combined with the die and shrink-fitted. However, split dies face problems when extruding material at the corners of the hexagonal split die. To address this problem, two types of split dies were evaluated: rounded hexagonal dies and angular hexagonal dies. The effects of the pre-stress ring on the dies were compared and analyzed and results show that using the angular split hexagonal die can extend the lifetime of forging dies.

  • Sheet Metal Forming by Press Forming Process takes a lot of time and cost from mold design to manufacturing. Therefore, all of die-makers are continuously conducting research to reduce the number of mold processes or the size of blanks to reduce costs. In the case of Forming complex shapes such as automobile component, wrinkles and cracks occur, so draw beads are used. Draw beads play an important role in suppressing the inflow of materials and minimizing the size of blanks. Factors that affect material flow include draw bead, blank holding pressure, lubricant, and surface roughness of punch and die. Most of the factors affect friction. In this study, after classifying circular beads and rectangular beads in cylindrical drawing molds using the AutoForm analysis program, the factors affecting the material inflow were considered.

  • The progressive die are multiple operations performed by means of a die having above two stages, on the each of stages performs a different operation as the sheet metal passes through the die hole. In the field of design and making tool for press working, the progressive die for sheet metal (STS 304, thickness : 0.5mm) is a specific division. In order to prevent the defects, the optimum design of the production part, strip layout, die design, die making and tryout etc. are necessary. They require analysis of many kinds of important factors, I. e. theory and practice of metal press working and its phenomena, die structure, machining condition for die making, die materials, heat treatment of die components, know-how and so on. In this study, we designed and constructed a progressive die of multi-stage and performed try out. Out of these processes the die development could be taken for advance. Especially the result of tryout and its analysis become the characteristics of this paper (part 1 and part 2) that nothing might be ever seen before such as this type of research method on all the processes. In the part 1 of this study we treated die design mostly.

  • The purpose of this paper is to establish an automated die design system for compacting and sizing process required in Powder Metallurgy. Though the Powder Metallurgy(P/M) is a practical and economical forming technology, it needs long time and many trials and errors for die design. Such a problem can be solved by introduction of the automated die design system for P/M. In order to establish the system, collecting, classifying, and systematizing related knowledges from the experts in industries, books, and papers were performed. The system was constructed by AutoLISP, the language operated in AutoCAD atmosphere. This language can efficiently support for user to work on drawings. There are three modules ; P/M part specification input module, P/M part design module, and Die design module. A part for vehicle was applied to the system and satisfied results were achieved.
