  • The effects of the nonlinear (quadratic) term in wind pressure have been analyzed in many papers with reference to linear structural models. The present paper addresses the problem of the response of nonlinear structures to stochastic nonlinear wind pressure. Adopting a single-degree-of-freedom structural model with polynomial nonlinearity, the solution is obtained by means of the moment equation approach in the context of It$\hat{o}$'s stochastic differential calculus. To do so, wind turbulence is idealized as the output of a linear filter excited by a Gaussian white noise. Response statistical moments are computed for both the equivalent linear system and the actual nonlinear one. In the second case, since the moment equations form an infinite hierarchy, a suitable iterative procedure is used to close it. The numerical analyses regard a Duffing oscillator, and the results compare well with Monte Carlo simulation.

  • SLA(Scanned Linear Array) is a portable display unit for implementing next-generation virtual realities, utilizes a design that light generated by a line of LEDs is reflected from the rapidly oscillating mirror to generate a raster display. Reaction forces generated by the motions of the mirror and counter-balance mass cancel each other at the device base, reducing vibration. Metal leaf springs have been extensively applied in such portable units. Magnetic springs have been developed and adopted that can replace the metal spring and can avoid many disadvantages of metal springs. We model and analyze the dynamics of the structure with magnetic springs and present the simulation and experimental analysis results, which can be utilized for identifying and eliminating possible problem sources in removing shaking forces and moments, and oscillating the mirror at the required amplitude and frequency. Finally, we present the improved novel magnetic actuator model which can be applied in portable display units.

  • During the last three decades, a few attentions have been paid for investigating the cost distribution for the optimal maintenance problems. In this article, we derive the moment of the discounted cost distribution over an infinite time horizon for the basic age replacement problem. With first two moments of the discounted cost distribution, we approximate the underlying distribution function by three theoretical distributions. Through a Monte Carlo simulation, we conclude that the log-normal distribution is the best fitted one to approximate the discounted cost distribution.

  • This paper addresses a control allocation method for fault-tolerant control by redistributing redundant control surfaces. The proposed method is based on a classical daisy chain approach for the compensation of faulty actuators. The existing daisy chain method calculates a desired moment according to a number of actuator groups. However, this method has a significant limitation; that is, any faulty actuator belonging to the last actuator group cannot be compensated, since there is no more redundant actuator group that can be used to generate the required moments. In this paper, a modified daisy chain method is proposed to overcome this problem. Using the proposed method, the order of actuator groups is readjusted so that actuator groups containing any faulty actuator are always placed in an upper group instead of the last one. A set of simulation results with an F-18 HARV aircraft demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve better performance than the existing daisy chain method.

  • An exact solution procedure is formulated for the free vibration and buckling analysis of rectangular plates having two opposite edges simply supported when these edges are subjected to linearly varying normal stresses. The other two edges may be clamped, simply supported or free, or they may be elastically supported. The transverse displacement (w) is assumed as sinusoidal in the direction of loading (x), and a power series is assumed in the lateral (y) direction (i.e., the method of Frobenius). Applying the boundary conditions yields the eigenvalue problem of finding the roots of a fourth order characteristic determinant. Care must be exercised to obtain adequate convergence for accurate vibration frequencies and buckling loads, as is demonstrated by two convergence tables. Some interesting and useful results for vibration frequencies and buckling loads, and their mode shapes, are presented for a variety of edge conditions and in-plane loadings, especially pure in-plane moments.

  • The present paper hopes to elucidate the problem of determining if a given I-shaped cross-section is properly proportioned to accommodate sufficient plastic hinge rotation capacity to facilitate the redistribution of moments in a structural system as needed to accommodate the formation of a collapse mechanism. It might be tempting to believe that application of the limiting flange plate slenderness value for the case of major axis flexure are applicable in this case; since the pervasive belief is that this approach ought to be conservative. However, the present research study indicates that this is not the case and thus more sophisticated analysis techniques are required to better understand this case.

  • The optimal estimation of a bearing only target tracking problem be achieved through the solution of the Fokker-Planck equation and the Bayesian update. Recently, a nonlinear filtering algorithm using a direct quadrature method of moments in which the associated Fokker-Planck equation can be propagated efficiently and accurately was proposed. Although this approach has demonstrated its promising in the field of nonlinear filtering in several examples, the "degeneracy" phenomenon, similar to that which exists in a typical particle filter, occasionally appears because only the weights are updated in the modified Bayesian rule in this algorithm. Therefore, in this paper to enhance the performance, a more stable measurement update process based upon the update equation in the Extended Kalman filters and a more accurate initialization and re-sampling strategy for weight and abscissas are proposed. Simulations are used to show the effectiveness of the proposed filter and the obtained results are promising.

  • This study is to investigate the problem of the SPM(Skin Pass Mil7) system which is a finishing treatment of steel sheet. and to develop a PID control scheme to minimize process instability. An electrohydraulic servo system with conventional proportional controller used to regulate the force on the strip works inadequately to yield very undesirable transient responses at the moments welding parts of the strip conte into and pass through the rolls. Both linearized and nonlinear models of a typical SPM system ware simulated first by using Simulink. Then Ziegler-Nichols ultimate cycling method was used for an initial reference guide to tune PID gains, and further fine tuning was performed to get desirable response. The test result in the plant show that proposed PID control scheme successfully improves the process instability in a SPM system.
