Objectives: This study aims to identify differences in problem gambling among Korean university students by gender and to analyze the relationship between problem gambling and health risk behaviors. Methods: With a sample of 2,026 4-year university students, a questionnaire included CPGI (Canadian Problem Gambling Index) scale and health risk behavior items was administered. Descriptive statistics, t-test, and ANOVA were performed on the data. Results: The prevalence of gambling addiction of male students(14.6%) was two times higher than that of female students(6.6%). The severity of problem gambling was higher in: smokers, those with drug use experience, heavy drinkers, and those with frequently recurring suicidal thoughts, respectively. Conclusions: This study suggests that the problem gambling of university students is a complicated and comprehensive public health problem that is related with health risk behaviors such as alcohol drinking, smoking, drug use, and suicidal thoughts. Prevention strategies and policies are suggested based on the study results.

Purpose: This study was performed to investigate the present condition of drug abuse and its association with depression, self-rated health and health behaviors by job status in Korean adults. Methods: Data were derived from the study on four addiction problem and suicide in 2014. Multiple logistic regression was used to analyze patterns of drug abuse according to depression, self-rated health and health behaviors. Results: The prevalence of drug abuse during the past year was 17.1% of the 4,018 subjects. About 3.3 times risk for drug abuse was found among individuals who had high depression scores. The risk of drug abuse was higher among those who were smoking (OR:1.46, 95% CI:1.17~1.83), drinking more frequently (OR:1.30, 95% CI:1.07~1.58), sleeping insufficiently (OR:1.31, 95% CI:1.03~1.67), eating irregularly (OR:1.45, 95% CI:1.19~1.76). Drug abuse problem was detected more seriously among employed than unemployed adults. Conclusion: Health-related behaviors, such as smoking, drinking, sleeping, eating should be considered simultaneously when designing strategies to deal with drug abuse problem, and it is important to understand the interaction between drug abuse and mental health. Furthermore, workplace based intervention can be effective in solving drug abuse problem.
The purpose of this study was to examine whether adolescents' parental rule obedience moderates the relationship between maternalmonitoring and problem behavior (drinking and vandalism). Participants were 398 adolescents attending a middle school (6th through 8th grades) in a semi-rural mid-Atlantic community in the USA. Data were collected by questionnaires including items regarding relationships with parents, problem behavior, and peer relationships. Hierarchical multiple regression was usedto analyze the data. Results indicate that maternal monitoring is negatively related with adolescent drinking and vandalism. However, the negative relationship varies as a function of adolescents' parental rule obedience. The relationship was stronger among adolescents with lower level of parental rule obedience than among adolescents with higher level of parental rule obedience. Findings from this study suggest that research on maternal monitoring during adolescence needs to take adolescents' personal characteristics into account to better understand the process. They also suggest that parents could lower the possibility that their children's will be involved in drinking and vandalism by maintaining quality relationships with their children because children are more likely to internalize their parents' rules and standards when they have positive relationships with parents.

Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) have been recognized as emerging environmental pollutants and are widely distributed all over the world. These compounds are hardly degradable and cause bioaccumulation and biomagnification during present for a long time in the environment: thereby after adversely biota and human bodies. It is difficult to remove PFCs using conventional water/wastewater treatment because of resistant property to photodecomposition, biodegradation and chemical decomposition. Moreover, domestic literature data on the pollution of PFCs in rivers and lakes are limited. In this paper, species, sources and risk of PFCs as well as behavior properties in drinking water/wastewater and treatment processes are demonstrated to encourage the domestic concern about PFCs.
Chlorine is widely used as a disinfectant in drinking-water systems throughout the world. Chlorine residual was used as an indicator for prediction of water quality in water distribution systems. The variation of chlorine residual in drinking water distribution systems of Suwon city was simulated using EPANET. EPANET is a computerized simulation model which predicts the dynamic hydraulic and water quality behavior within a water distribution system operating over an extended time period. Sampling and analysis were performed to calibrated the computer model in 1999 (Aug. Summer). Water quality variables used in simulations are temperature, roughness coefficient, pipe diameter, pipe length, water demand, velocity and so on. Extended water residence time affected water quality due to the extended reaction time in some areas. All area showed the higher concentration of chlorine residual than 0.2mg/l(standard). So it can be concluded that any area in Suwon city is not in biological regrowth problem. Rechlorination turned out to be an useful method for uniform concentration of free chlorine residual in distribution system. The cost of disinfectant could be saved remarkably by cutting down the initial chlorine concentration to the level which guarantees minimum concentration (0.2mg/l) throughout the distribution system.
This study analyzed the health risk behavior of Korean college students by comparing them based on the college location (Seoul vs. non-Seoul). Converging analyses of health risk behaviors (drinking behavior, sex, suicidality) and health risk factors (mental health, stress) were attempted. The results showed the 23% of students were at risk of serious drinking problem, and the 52.6% of students consumed alcohol once in every other week or more often. In case of the sexual behavior, 40.6% had sexual experience. Importantly, the 25.4% and the 20.3% of college students in Seoul and non-Seoul area, respectively, had two or more sexual partners. Also, students in non-Seoul area had a tendency of the higher level of suicidality, and the lower level of mental health. Overall, the self-respect score was the only statistically significant factor showing the Seoul/non-Seoul difference. These results may be able to intervene the health risk behaviors of college students.
Purpose: This study was done to identify contraceptive practices in adolescent girls in South Korea and predictors of contraceptive practices. Methods: The study sample included 743 girls who had experienced sexual activity. Using statistics from the 12th (2016) Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey, hierarchical logistic regression analysis was conducted. Results: The contraceptive practice rate for adolescent girls was 34%. Contraceptive practice was associated with 'age at first intercourse' and 'sexual intercourse after drinking'. For adolescent girls who had early sexual initiation and drank alcohol before sexual intercourse there was a tendency to reduce the practice of contraception. Conclusion: It is necessary to provide practical sex education to improve the practice of contraception in these adolescents. In addition, adolescent girls should be encourage to delay their first intercourse. The results of this study can also be used to develop education interventions regarding healthy sexuality behaviour including the practice of contraception.
The sleeplessness in childhood is quite different from that in adulthood in terms of causes, developmental process, and treatment. Sleep behavior in childhood is strongly influenced by parental personality and familial and cultural background. In understanding and management of sleeplessness of children, it is especially important to understand the separation anxiety and the ways of its management in bedtime because bedtime routine with children one of separation process from parents. Co-sleeping, parental intervention, transional object and bedtime routines can be appeared in order to reduce the anxiety from bedtime separation. Causes of sleeplessness in infant and toddler are bad sleep-onset association, nocturnal drinking, colic, and food allergy. In preschool and school aged children, limit-setting sleep problem and fears and nightmare can be causes of sleeplessness. When good sleep environment and habits are established sound sleep and more mature personality can be developed.
Objectives: This study investigated the average number of drinkers in Korea, the number of high-risk drinkers, the average amount of alcohol consumed by high-risk drinkers, and the types of alcohol consumed according to the characteristics of the group of dependent drinkers. Methods: The results were obtained by analyzing the following data: The Global Status Report on Alcohol and Health; Country Profile 2014; WHO Country Profile 2014; Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2014, Korean Statistical Information Service; National Tax Statistics-Liquor Tax; Gallup Drinking Frequency Survey 2015 Results: This study found that a large proportion of drinkers in Korea are already high-risk drinkers, and even among drinkers, alcohol consumption was highly biased. It was reported that 49.8% of men in the problem, abuse, and dependence groups accounted for 92.4% of total alcohol consumption among the male population. Notably, the 9.6% of men making up the dependent group consumed more than 30% of the alcohol ingested among males. Women had significant variations within groups that were considered high-risk and exhibited a large share of alcohol consumption in the problem (10.0% of the female population), abuse (1.8% of the female population), and dependence (1.5% of the female population) groups, constituting 72.8% of total alcohol consumption. The average amount of alcohol consumed by drinkers in Korea seems to have exceeded the level of intake by high-risk groups. Alcohol-dependent groups consumed 900.7 mL of soju, 405.2 mL of table wine, and 2,043.8 mL of beer, which is very similar to the consumption average of 2,031 mL of beer and 895.2 mL of soju in the drinking group. Conclusion: It has been shown that men's dependence on alcohol is serious, and it is possible to infer that alcohol consumption in some vulnerable groups is very high. As the average alcohol intake among alcohol-dependent groups and ordinary drinkers is very similar, it is highly likely that the drinker is an alcohol-dependent consumer in Korea.

The purpose of this study is to develop a physical activity program for problem drinkers living in side rooms(Jjok-bang) based on the health belief model. In order to develop a physical activity program suitable for and applicable to the characteristics of the problem drinkers, the detailed components of the health belief model and the learning goals for each program were linked. It consists of a total of 10 activities, and in the introductory stage of each program, physical examination and gymnastics were conducted, and in the development stage, 10 physical activities were conducted to help the movement of large and small muscles and concentration. In the final stage of organizing, it consisted of time to express one's emotions through writing and painting and to reflect. The developed program was commissioned by an expert to derive the content validity coefficient (CVI=.75). Through the physical activity program developed in this study, it is believed that the problem drinking behavior of problem drinkers living in side rooms can be gradually reduced. The physical activity program developed in this study is expected to gradually reduce the problems of problem drinkers living in Jjock-bang. In the next step, we propose a study that quantitatively and qualitatively analyzes the intervention effect by applying this program to clients.
