  • A EEG(ElectroEncephaloGram) compression scheme based on subband coding techniques is presented in this paper. Considering the frequency characteristics of EEG, the raw signal was decomposed into different frequency bands. After decomposition, optimal bit allocation was done by adapting to the standard deviation in each frequency bands, and decomposed signals were quantized using pdf(probability density function)-optimized nonuniform quantizer. Based on the above mentioned coding scheme, coding results of various multichannel EEG signal were shown with compression ratio and SNR(signal-to-noise ratio).

  • In this paper, We proposed fast ultrasound image compression based on characteristics of ultrasound images. In the proposed method, wavelet transform is performed for non-zero coefficients selectively. It codes zero-tree symbols using conditional pdf (probability density function) as orientation of bands. It normalizes wavelet coefficients with threshold of each wavelet band and encodes those using a uniform quantizer. Experimental results show that the proposed method is the proposed method is superior in PSNR to LuraTech's method by about 1.0 dB, to JPEG by about 5.0 dB for $640\times480$ 24bits color ultrasound image.

  • The accuracy of contingency estimation plays an important role for dealing with the uncertainty of the financial success of construction project. Its' estimation may be used for various purposes such as schedule control, emergency resolve, and quality expense, etc. This paper presents a contingency estimation method which is schedule control specific. The method 1) implements stochastic EVMS, 2) detects a specific timing for schedule compression, 3) identifies an optimal strategy for shortening planned schedule, 4) finds a probability density function (PDF) of project cost overrun, and 5) estimates the optimal contingency cost based on the level of confidence. The method facilitates expeditious decisions involved in project budgeting. The validity of the method is confirmed by performing test case.

  • This paper describes probabilistic characteristics of damping in a tall building based on the results of full-scale measurement. It is found, through statistical analysis of the damping data, that the probability density function(PDF) of damping at the high amplitude plateau can be well represented by Normal distribution (Gaussian distribution). A stochastic damping model is proposed to estimate amplitude-dependent damping for practical application.

  • As a definition of NERC, Available Transfer Capability(ATC) is a measure of the transfer capability remaining in the physical transmission network for the future commercial activity. To calculate ATC, accurate and defensible TTC, CBM and TRM should be calculated in advance. In this paper, we propose a method to quantify TRM using probabilistic load flow based on the method of moment. Generation output, bus voltages, loads, and line outages are considered as complex random variables (CRV) to take into account for uncertainties related to the transmission network conditions. Probability Density Function (PDF) of line flow at the most limiting line is used to quantify TRM with the desired probabilistic margin. Suggested method is compared with the results from conventional CPF method and verified using 24 bus MRTS, and the suggested method based on PLF shows efficiency and flexibility for the quantification of TRM compared with the conventional method.

  • Three dimensional numerical analysis for the turbulent reactive flow and radiative heat transfer in the walking beam type of a reheat furnace in POSCO has been carried out by the industrial code FLUENT. Computations an based on the conservation equations of mass, momentum, energy and species with the $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and mixture fraction/PDF(Probability Density Function) approach for the combustion rate. Radiative heat transfer is computed by the discrete ordinates radiation model in combination with the weighted-sum-of-gray-gas model for the absorption coefficient of gas medium. The predicted temperture distribution in the reheat furnace and energy flow fractions are in reasonable agreement with the measurement data.

  • Recently, structures are becoming longer and higher because of the developments of new materials and construction techniques. However, such modern structures are more susceptible to excessive structural vibrations which cause deterioration in serviceability and structural safety. A modified probabilistic neural network(MPNN) approach is proposed to reduce the structural vibration. In this study, the global probability density function(PDF) of MPNN is reflected by summing the heterogeneous local PDFs automatically determined in the individual standard deviation of each variable. The proposed algorithm is applied for the vibration control of a three-story shear building model under Northridge earthquake. When the control results of the MPNN are compared with those of conventional PNN to verify the control performance, the MPNN controller proves to be more effective than PNN methods in decreasing the structural responses.

  • In this paper, we proposed a method of modeling a system using Fuzzy Equalization(FE) and Genetic Algorithm(GA). The initial model is constructed using FE. The antecedent parameters and the rules in fuzzy logic are tuned by GA. The proposed system minimizes the modeling error and the size of structure. The process of building membership functions using PDF(Probability Density Function) and GA tunes the antecedent parameter and rules for minimizing the error and structure. The usefulness of proposed method is demonstrated by applying to Box-Jenkins furnace data.

  • Large eddy simulation is applied to the turbulent flow and heat transfer in straight cooling passages with varying aspect ratio. The turbulent statistics of the flow and thermal quantities are calculated and the characteristics of Nusselt number are investigated. To scrutinize near-wall streamwise vortices, a conditional sampling technique is adopted. Clockwise and counter-clockwise rotating streamwise vortices are sampled and the probability density function of the vortex circulation Reynolds number and wall Nusselt number are calculated.

  • The characteristics of flow pattern transitions in a horizontal cocurrent gas-liquid flow have been investigated by means of a statistical analysis of instantaneous pressure drop curves at an orifice. The dimensionless intensity of pressure drop fluctuation shows a sudden change during the course of flow transitions, indicating that it may be a good measure to identify the flow regime transitions. The probability density function of the curves feature a unique pattern depending upon the flow regimes and the statistical properties of the PDF also have particular ranges for each flow regime. In conclusion, the statistical analysis of instantaneous pressure drops may be a powerful tool for predicting the flow regime transitions.
