  • This study is to suggest a probabilistic design determining configurations of slider air bearings with the dimensional manufacturing tolerances of the ABS. The probabilistic design problem is formulated to minimize the variation in flying height from a target value while satisfying the desired probabilities keeping the pitch and roll angles within suitable range. The proposed approach first solves the deterministic optimization problem. Then, beginning with this solution, the RBDO is continued with the probabilistic constraints affected by the random variables with a fixed standard deviation in normal distribution. The RBDO results are directly compared with the values of the initial design and the results of the deterministic optimization, respectively. The reliability analyses are performed by the descriptive sampling (DS) to show the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed approach. It is demonstrated that the proposed RBDO approach can efficiently obtain an optimum solution satisfying all the desired probabilistic constraints.

  • The sequential sampling inspection method is an extension of the multiple-sampling methods, and its theory is based on the sequential probability ratio test (SPRT) of Wald. In this paper, the characteristics of SPRT for testing the number of defects are approximated by using the estimated excess over the boundaries. The use of the estimated excess shows good performances in estimating the operating characteristic function and the average sample number of SPRT compared to the method by neglecting the excess. It also makes it possible to determine the boundary values which satisfy the desired error probabilities.

  • Suppose ${X_n}$ is a Markov process taking values in some arbitrary space $(S, \varphi)$ with n-stemp transition probability $$ P^{(n)}(x, B) = Prob(X_n \in B$\mid$X_0 = x), x \in X, B \in \varphi.$$ We shall call a Markov process with transition probabilities $P{(n)}(x, B)$ $\phi$-irreducible for some non-trivial $\sigma$-finite measure $\phi$ on $\varphi$ if whenever $\phi(B) > 0$, $$ \sum^{\infty}_{n=1}{2^{-n}P^{(n)}}(x, B) > 0, for every x \in S.$$ A non-trivial $\sigma$-finite measure $\pi$ on $\varphi$ is called invariant for ${X_n}$ if $$ \int{P(x, B)\pi(dx) = \pi(B)}, B \in \varphi $$.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient method to detect abrupt shot changes in compressed MPEG video data by using reference ratios among video frames. The reference ratios among video frames imply the degree of similarities among adjacent frames by prediction coded type of each frames. A shot change is detected if the similarity degrees of a frame and its adjacent frames are low. This paper proposes an efficient shot change detection algorithm by using Fuzzy c-means(FCM) clustering algorithm. The FCM clustering uses the shot change probabilities evaluated in the mask matching of reference ratios and difference measure values based on frame reference ratios.

  • For Weibull distributed lifetimes, this paper presents asymptotically optimal accelerated life test plans for practical applications under intermittent inspection and type-I censoring. Computational results show that the asymptotic variance of a low quantile at the design stress as optimal criterion is insensitive to the number of inspections at overstress levels. Sensitivity analyses indicate that optimal plans are robust enough to moderate departures of estimated failure probabilities at the design and high stresses as input parameters to plan accelerated life tests from their true values. Monte Carlo simulation for small sample study on optimal accelerated life test plans developed by the asymptotic maximum likelihood theory is conducted. Simulation results suggest that optimal plans are satisfactory for sample size in practice.

  • The test statistic in ANOVA tests has a single or doubly noncentral F distribution and the noncentral F distribution is applied to the calculation of the power functions of tests of general linear hypotheses. In this paper. the evaluation of the cumulative function of the single noncentral F distribution is applied to the neural network theory. The neural network consists of the multi-layer perceptron structure and learning process has the algorithm of the backpropagation. Numerical comparisons are made between the results obtained by neural network theory and the Patnaik's values.

  • The paper considers the Bayesian interval estimation for the common mean of several normal populations. A Bayesian procedure is proposed based on the idea of matching asymptotically the coverage probabilities of Bayesian credible intervals with their frequentist counterparts. Several frequentist procedures based on pivots and P-values are introduced and compared with Bayesian procedure through simulation study. Both simulation results demonstrate that the Bayesian procedure performs as well or better than any available frequentist procedure even from a frequentist perspective.

  • A model was developed for a simple clinical trial in which graders had defined probabilities of misclassifying pathologic material to disease present or absent. The authors compared Kappa between graders, and efficiency and bias in the clinical trial in the presence of misclassification. Though related to bias and efficiency, Kappa did not predict these two statistics well. These results pertain generally to evaluation of systems for encoding medical information, and the relevance of Kappa in determining whether such systems are ready for use in comparative studies. The authors conclude that, by itself, Kappa is not informative Enough to evaluate the appropriateness of a grading scheme for comparative studies. Additional, and perhaps difficult, questions must be addressed for such evaluation.

  • Alert-confirm detection is a highly efficient method to improve phased array radar search performance. It comprises sequential detection in two steps: alert detection, in which a target is detected at a low detection threshold, and confirm detection, which is triggered by alert detection with a longer dwell time to minimize false alarms. This paper provides a design method for applying the alert-confirm detection to multifunctional radars. We find optimum dwell times and false alarm probabilities for each alert detection and confirm detection under the dual constraints of total false alarm probability and maximum allowable dwell time per position. These optimum values are expressed as a function of the mean new target appearance rate. The proposed alert-confirm detection increases the maximum detection range even with a shorter frame time than that of uniform scanning.
